Age-specific mortality and fecundity of a spider mite under diet restriction and delayed mating

Numerous experimental life-history studies on aging are mainly baised on two classical models—fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster(Meigen)and nematode Caenorhab-ditis elegans(Maupas)—with relatively little attention given to other organisms with different life-history characters.Two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch(Acari:Tetranychidae)differs from many other arthropods in that the females continue their growth in the early adult stage and can reproduce sexually and asexually.In this study,the influences of dietary restriction and delayed mating on the aging patterns of the spider mite were examined with the prevailing survival and reproduction trade-off hypothesis of aging being tested.Significant sex-specific responses of the spider mites were found.The females showed longevity extension on diet restriction(fasting for 2 days in every 4 days)compared with their counterparts being fed ad libitum,and after delayed mating for 9 days,while the males displayed a decrease in lifespan when experiencing diet restriction but were not significantly influenced by delayed mating.Path analysis was used to investigate the relationship between mite survival and reproduction traits,including longevity,female lifetime reproduction,age at first reproduction,early reproductive efforts and late reproductive efforts,yielding no evidence for trade-offs between these life-history traits.The additive effects of dietary restriction and delayed mating in lifespan extension of female spider mites were confirmed,proving that diet restriction is a robust anti-aging intervention,and that later onset of reproduction can prolong adult lifespan in females.

A 12-year-old girl presented with a history of unexplained persistent fever,accompanied by paroxysmal dry cough,skin ulceration.The patient had a past medical history of recurrent fever,pneumonia(at least four times per year),eczema,accompanied by diarrhea,repeated skin Staphylococcus aureus infection since 6 months of age.Physical examination revealed broad nasal bridge and scoliosis,and chest computed tomography(CT)showed pneumonia,partial bronchiectasis of the right lung,and multiple mediastinal lymph node enlargement with confluence(Fig.1).Laboratory studies demonstrated significantly increased blood eosinophils and serum level of total IgE.The biopsy of the rashes on the buttocks suggested eosinophil infiltration.

Added value of shear-wave elastography in the prediction of extracapsular extension and seminal vesicle invasion before radical prostatectomy

The purpose of this study was to analyze the value of transrectal shear-wave elastography(SWE)in combination with multivariable tools for predicting adverse pathological features before radical prostatectomy(RP).Preoperative clinicopathological variables,multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging(mp-MRI)manifestations,and the maximum elastic value of the prostate(Emax)on SWE were retrospectively collected.The accuracy of SWE for predicting adverse pathological features was evaluated based on postoperative pathology,and parameters with statistical significance were selected.The diagnostic performance of various models,including preoperative clinicopathological variables(model 1),preoperative clinicopathological variables+mp-MRI(model 2),and preoperative clinicopathological variables+mp-MRI+SWE(model 3),was evaluated with area under the receiver operator characteristic curve(AUC)analysis.Emax was significantly higher in prostate cancer with extracapsular extension(ECE)or seminal vesicle invasion(SVI)with both Plinical models for ECE(model 2 vs model 1,P=0.031;model 3 vs model 1,P=0.002;model 3 vs model 2,P=0.018)and SVI(model 2 vs model 1,P=0.147;model 3 vs model 1,P=0.037;model 3 vs model 2,P=0.134).SWE is valuable for identifying patients at high risk of adverse pathology.

Amorphous iron-nickel phosphide nanocone arrays as efficient bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting

The synthesis of low-cost and highly active electrodes for both oxygen evolution reaction(OER)and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)is very important for water splitting.In this work,the novel amorphous iron-nickel phosphide(FeP-Ni)nanocone arrays as efficient bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting have been in-situ assembled on conductive three-dimensional(3D)Ni foam via a facile and mild liquid deposition process.It is found that the FeP-Ni electrode demonstrates highly efficient electrocatalytic performance toward overall water splitting.In 1 M KOH electrolyte,the optimal FeP-Ni electrode drives a current density of 10 mA cm^(-2) at overpotential of 218 mV for the OER and120 mV for the HER,and can attain such current density for 25 h without performance regression.Moreover,a two-electrode electrolyzer comprising the FeP-Ni electrodes can afford 10 mA cm^(-2) electrolysis current at a low cell voltage of 1.62 V and maintain long-term stability,as well as superior to that of the coupled RuO_(2)/NFk Pt/C/NF cell.Detailed characterizations confirm that the excellent electrocatalytic performances for water splitting are attributed to the unique 3D morphology of nanocone arrays,which could expose more surface active sites,facilitate electrolyte diffusion,and benefit charge transfer and also favorable bubble detachment behavior.Our work presents a facile and cost-effective pathway to design and develop active self-supported electrodes with novel 3D morphology for water electrolysis.

Intrinsic background radiation of LaBr3(Ce)detector via coincidence measurements and simulations

The LaBr3(Ce)detector has attracted much attention in recent years because of its superior characteristics compared with other scintillating materials in terms of resolution and efficiency.However,it has a relatively high intrinsic background radiation because of the naturally occurring radioisotopes in lanthanum,actinium,and their daughter nuclei.This limits its applications in low-counting rate experiments.In this study,we identified the radioactive isotopes in theφ3"x 3"Saint-Gobain B380 detector by a coincidence measurement using a Clover detector in a low-background shielding system.Moreover,we carried out a Geant4 simulation of the experimental spectra to evaluate the activities of the main internal radiation components.The total activity of the background radiation of B380 is determined to be 1.523(34)Bq/cm^3.The main sources include 138La at 1.428(34)Bq/cm^3,207Tl at 0.0135(13)Bq/cm^3,211Bi at 0.0136(15)Bq/cm^3,215Po at 0.0135(3)Bq/cm^3,219Rn at 0.0125(12)Bq/cm^3,223Fr at 0.0019(11)Bq/cm^3,223Ra at 0.0127(10)Bq/cm^3,227Th at 0.0158(22)Bq/cm^3,and 227Ac at 0.0135(13)Bq/cm^3.Of these,the activities of 207Tl,211Po,215Po,223Fr,and 227Ac are deduced for the first time from the secular equilibrium established in the decay chain of 227Ac.

Local and Parallel Finite Element Algorithms Based on Two-grid Discretizations for the Unsteady MHD Equations with Low Electromagnetic Reynolds Number

This paper mainly presents and studies some local and parallel finite element methods for the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic equations with low electromagnetic Reynolds number. Firstly, both the semi discrete and fully discrete local algorithms are provided and investigated, and the theoretical tool crucial to the analysis of the fully discrete local algorithm is obtained. Subsequently, we generalize the fully discrete local algorithm to the fully discrete parallel algorithm. At the end, some numerical experiments are provided to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms.

A new comprehensive dataset of solar filaments of one-hundred-year interval (Ⅱ) the poleward migration of polar crown filaments

Solar filaments,hypothermia and dense structures suspended in the solar corona are formed above the magnetic polarity inversion line.Polar crown filaments(PCFs)at high-latitude regions of the Sun are of profound significance to the periodic variation of solar activities.In this paper,we statistically analyze PCFs by using full disk Ha data from 1912 to 2018,which were obtained by Kodaikanal Solar Observatory(KODA,India),National Solar Observatory(NSO,USA),Kanzelhohe Solar Observatory(KSO,Austria),Big Bear Solar Observatory(BBSO,USA),and Huairou Solar Observing Station(HSOS,China).We first manually identify PCFs from every solar image based on the centennial data,and record the latitude and other features corresponding to the PCFs.Then we plot the PCF latitude distribution as a function of time,which clearly shows that PCFs rush to the poles at the ascending phase of each solar cycle.Our results show that the filaments drift toward mid-latitude covering solar cycle 15 to 24 after the PCFs reach the highest latitudes.The poleward migration rates of PCFs are calculated in ten solar cycles,and the range is about 0.12 degree to 0.50 degree per Carrington Rotation(CR).We also investigate the north-south(N-S)asymmetry of migration rates and the normalized N-S asymmetry index.

厘清背景环境因素(本研究定义为目标植株周围物种的数量、密度以及植株高度)对植物花性状获得表型选择压力的影响,是认识和预测同域开花物种-种间竞争环境下植物花性状进化模式和进化轨迹的关键环节;同时,对认识和理解传粉者施加的表型选择在时空上的变化具有重要作用。本研究以兰科多年生草本植物绶草(Spiranthes sinensis)为材料,通过人为降低绶草周围植株高度,连续两年定量衡量背景环境因素分别通过结实数和花粉输出途径对绶草4个花性状(开花时间、株高、花冠大小和花数目)获得表型选择的影响。研究结果表明,降低周围植株高度导致的背景环境改变对开花时间和株高等表型性状具有选择作用:改变了的背景环境选择开花时间更早、株高更矮的绶草植株个体,且两类性状获得的表型选择强度于年际间存在差异。进一步研究表明,这种背景环境的改变通过雌性适合度产生的影响强于通过雄性适合度。本研究证实了背景环境因素在驱动被子植物花性状分化和塑造花多样性过程中的潜在作用。

The asymmetric transfer hydrogenation(ATH)of a wide range of ketones catalyzed by manganese complex as well as chiral P_(x)N_(y)-type ligand under mild conditions was investigated.Using 2-propanol as hydrogen source,various ketones could be enantioselectively hydrogenated by combining cheap,readily available[MnBr(CO)_(5)]with chiral,22-membered macrocyclic ligand(R,R,R',R')-CyP_(2)N_(4)(L_(5))with 2 mol%of catalyst loading,affording highly valuable chiral alcohols with up to 95%ee.

A numerical study of fluid injection and mixing under near-critical conditions

Nitrogen injection under conditions close vicinity of the liquid-gas critical point is studied numerically. The fluid thermodynamic and transport properties vary drasti- cally and exhibit anomalies in the near-critical regime. These anomalies can cause distinctive effects on heat-transfer and fluid-flow characteristics. To focus on the influence of ther- modynamics on the flow field, a relatively low injection Reynolds number of 1 750 is adopted. For comparisons, a reference case with the same configuration and Reynolds number is simulated in the ideal gas regime. The model accommodates full conservation laws, real-fluid thermody- namic and transport phenomena. Results reveal that the flow features of the near-critical fluid jet are significantly differ- ent from their counterpart. The near-critical fluid jet spreads faster and mixes more efficiently with the ambient fluid along with a more rapidly development of the vortex pairing pro- cess. Detailed analysis at different streamwise locations in- cluding both the flat shear-layer region and fully developed vortex region reveals the important effect of volume dilata- tion and baroclinic torque in the near-critical fluid case. The former disturbs the shear layer and makes it more unstable. The volume dilatation and baroclinic effects strengthen the vorticity and stimulate the vortex rolling up and pairing pro- cess
