Grain yield and water use efficiency of super rice under soil water deficit and alternate wetting and drying irrigation

This study investigated if super rice could better cope with soil water deficit and if it could have better yield performance and water use efficiency （WUE） under alternate wetting and drying （AWD） irrigation than check rice. Two super rice cultivars and two elite check rice cultivars were grown in pots with three soil moisture levels, well watered （WW）, moderate water deficit （MWD） and severe water deficit （SWD）. Two cultivars, each for super rice and check rice, were grown in field with three irrigation regimes, alternate wetting and moderate drying （AWMD）, alternate wetting and severe drying （AWSD） and conventional irrigation （CI）. Compared with that under WW, grain yield was significantly decreased under MWD and SWD treatments, with less reduction for super rice than for check rice. Super rice had higher percentage of productive tillers, deeper root distribution, higher root oxidation activity, and greater aboveground biomass production at mid and late growth stages than check rice, especially under WMD and WSD. Compared with CI,AWMD increased, whereasAWSD decreased grain yield, with more increase or less decrease for super rice than for check rice. Both MWD and SWD treatments and eitherAWMD orAWSD regime significantly increased WUE compared with WW treatment or CI regime, with more increase for super rice than for check rice. The results suggest that super rice has a stronger ability to cope with soil water deficit and holds greater promising to increase both grain yield and WUE by adoption of moderate AWD irrigation.

AIM To determine the feasibility,safety,and oncological outcome of laparoscopic resection of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs)based on favorable or unfavorable *** Our hospital database included 207 patients who underwent laparoscopic removal of gastric GISTs from January 2004 to September *** demographics,clinical presentation,surgery,histopathology,postoperative course,and oncological outcomes were reviewed and *** Gastric GIST in favorable locations was present in81/207(39.1%)cases,and in unfavorable locations in 126/207(60.9%)*** mean tumor size was 3.28±1.82 *** conversions occurred,and complete R0 resection was achieved in 207(100%)*** were three incidences of iatrogenic tumor *** feasibility and safety of laparoscopic surgery were comparable in both groups with no statistical difference between unfavorable and favorable location groups,respectively:for operative time:83.86±44.41 vs 80.77±36.46 min,P=0.627;conversion rate:0%vs 0%;estimated blood loss:27.74±45.2vs 29.59±41.18 m L,P=0.780;tumor rupture during surgery:0.90%vs 2.82%,P=0.322;or postoperative complications:3.74%vs 7.04%,P=*** follow-up period recurrence rate was 1.89%with no significant differences between the two groups(3.03%vs 0%,P=0.447).Overall 5-year survival rate was98.76%and survival rates were similar between the two groups:98.99%vs 98.39%,P=0.623(unfavorable vs favorable,respectively).CONCLUSION The laparoscopic approach for gastric GISTs is safe and feasible with well-accepted oncological surgical *** for laparoscopic resection should be selected according to the location and size of the *** treatment of gastric GISTs in unfavorable locations should not be restricted in gastrointestinal centers.

We conduct a statistical analysis of the hardness ratio(HR)for bright sources in the 4 yr Galactic Plane Scanning Survey catalog of *** on the stable(variable)flux F_(s)(F_(v))or spectrum S_(s)(S_(v))of each source,the bright sources are classified into three groups:F_(v)&S_(v),F_(v)&S_(s),and F_(s)&_(s).Our study of the HR characteristics in different types of sources reveals that accretion-powered neutron star(NS)low-mass X-ray binaries(LMXBs)exhibit softer energy spectra than NS high-mass X-ray binaries(HMXBs),but harder energy spectra than black hole binaries in most *** difference is probably due to their different magnetic field ***,Fv&Sv LMXBs tend to be harder than Fv&Ss LMXBs below 7 keV,while the opposite is true for *** results suggest that LMXBs may dominate unclassified sources,and NS binaries are likely to be the primary type of X-ray binaries with ambiguous compact *** comparing the HR of transient sources in their outburst and low-flux states,it is found that the averaged HR of four sources in the two states are roughly comparable within *** also investigate the spatial properties of the three groups and find that Fv&Sv sources are mainly located in the longitude of-20°

Relationships between changes of kernel nutritive components and seed vigor during development stages of F_1 seeds of sh_2 sweet corn

The changes of kernel nutritive components and seed vigor in F1 seeds of sh2 sweet corn during seed development stage were investigated and the relationships between them were analyzed by time series regression (TSR) analysis. The results show that total soluble sugar and reducing sugar contents gradually declined, while starch and soluble protein contents increased throughout the seed development stages. Germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index gradually increased along with seed development and reached the highest levels at 38 d after pollination (DAP). The TSR showed that, during 14 to 42 DAP, total soluble sugar content was independent of the vigor parameters determined in present experiment, while the reducing sugar content had a significant effect on seed vigor. TSR equations between seed reducing sugar and seed vigor were also developed. There were negative correlations between the seed reducing sugar content and the germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index, respectively. It is suggested that the seed germination, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index could be predicted by the content of reducing sugar in sweet corn seeds during seed development stages.

Dear Editor,Multisite phosphorylation is observed in many signaling proteins,which confers the proteins new functions.A multisite phosphorylated protein can exhibit switch-like response to cellular stimuli,with the often-clustered phosphorylation sites either unphosphorylated or fully phosphorylated by the same kinase(Kapuy et al..2009).Multisite phosphorylation has also been reported to promote the folding of an intrinsically disordered protein,and consequently modulate the binding affinity to other proteins(Bah et al.,2015).Here we show that multisite phosphorylation makes a protein a better pH sensor,promptly switching between alternative conformational states in response to pH change under physiological conditions.

Study on the regulation of broad-spectrum resistance is an active area in plant biology. RESISTANCE TO POWDERY MILDEW 8.1(RPW8.1)is one of a few broad-spectrum resistance genes triggering the hypersensitive response(HR) to restrict multiple pathogenic infections. To address the question how RPW8.1 signaling is regulated,we performed a genetic screen and tried to identify mutations enhancing RPW8.1-mediated ***, we provided evidence to connect an annexin protein with RPW8.1-mediated resistance in Arabidopsis against powdery mildew. We isolated and characterized Arabidopsis b7-6 mutant.A point mutation in b7-6 at the At5 g12380 locus resulted in an amino acid substitution in ANNEXIN8(AtANN8). Loss-of-function or RNA-silencing of AtANN8 led to enhanced expression of RPW8.1,RPW8.1-dependent necrotic lesions in leaves, and defense against powdery mildew. Conversely,over-expression of AtANN8 compromised RPW8.1-mediated disease resistance and cell death. Interestingly, the mutation in AtANN8 enhanced RPW8.1-triggered H2O2. In addition, mutation in AtANN8 led to hypersensitivity to salt stress. Together, our data indicate that AtANN8 is involved in multiple stress signaling pathways and negatively regulates RPW8.1-mediated resistance against powdery mildew and cell death, thus linking ANNEXIN’s function with plant immunity.
