Electrochemical reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)in the presence of sodium alginate and its application in water purification

Chromium(Cr)is used in many manufacturing processes,and its release into natural waters is a major environmental problem today.Low concentrations of Cr(Ⅵ)are toxic to human health and living organisms due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic nature of this mineral.This work examined the conversion of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)via electrochemical reduction using gold electrode in an acidic sodium alginate(SA)solution and subsequent removal of the produced Cr(Ⅲ)-SA by the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration(PEUF)technique.A solution of SA in nitric acid was used both as an electrolytic medium during the voltammetric measurements and bulk electrolysis and as an extracting agent during the PEUF technique.The electroanalysis of Cr(Ⅵ)was performed by linear sweep voltammetry in the presence of acidic SA solution to study its voltammetric behavior as a function of the Cr(Ⅵ)concentration,pH,presence of Cr(Ⅲ),SA concentration and scan rate.In addition,the quantitative reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)was studied through the bulk electrolysis technique.The results showed efficient reduction with well-defined peaks at approximately 0.3 V vs.Ag/AgCl,using a gold working electrode.As the pH increased,the reduction signal strongly decreased until its disappearance.The optimum SA concentration was 10 mmol/L,and it was observed that the presence of Cr(Ⅲ)did not interfere in the Cr(Ⅵ)electroanalysis.Through the quantitative reduction by bulk electrolysis in the presence of acidic SA solution,it was possible to reduce all Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)followed by its removal via PEUF.

-592 and -1082 interleukin-10 polymorphisms in pulmonary tuberculosis with type 2 diabetes

Objective:To determine the polymorphisms of Interleukin-10(IL-10)(-592,-1082) in pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB)with and without type 2 diabetes(T2D).Methods:We studied a Mexican mestizo population of 37 patients with TB in remission(TBr) and 40 with active pulmonary TB (PTB),21 patients with TB + T2D.47 blood donors accepted,and 13 healthy health-care workers with tuberculin skin lest positive.Determination of IL-10 polymorphisms was performed by real-lime Polymerase chain reaction.Results:IL-10-592C/A presented in a greater proportion in healthy individuals than in patients with type 2 diabetes and TB in a not quite significant statistically manner.IL-10-1082A/A presented more frequently in the group of patients with both diseases,not being statistically significant in comparison with the group of healthy subjects. Conclusions:This study describes two important new findings.First,it reveals that the IL-10 (-592 A/A and -592 C/C) polymorphisms were found in a greater proportion in a group of patients with T2D and TB than in healthy subjects.Second,the study provides evidence that the(-1082 G/G) polymorphism presented with greater frequency in healthy individuals than in patients with both ol these diseases.

Objective:To assess the role of polymerase chain reaction(PCR)in serum sauples,in the diagnosis of osteoarticular tuberculosis(OTB)in a setting where only clinical and imaging diagnoses determine the treatment.Methods:A total of 44 consecutive serum specimens were collected from clinically suspected OTB patients,based on clinical and radiological[X-ray or magnetic resonance imagng/computecl tomography]features.They were scrcened by in-house nested PCR.In addition,a few specimens were examined by Gram stain,acid-fast bacilli stain,histand routine bacterial culture.A total of 39 specimens were collected from patients suffering from other bone diseases of nontuberculous origin and included as negative controls.Results:of the 44 clinically suspected OTB patients,in-house nested PCR was positive in 40(91%)cases;PCR was negative in 38(97%)negative controls.Sensitivity and specificity of our in—house nested PCR was 90.3%and 97.4%,respectively.The PCR report was available within 48 h.It was possible to standardize serum PCR technique and in positive cases,a good n was observed in terms of an adequate treatment response.Conclusions:Nested PCR in serum samples is a rapid,highly sensitive and specific modality for OTB detection,PCR should be performed in addition to clinical evaluation,imaging studies,acidfast bacilli staining,culture and histopathology diagnosis,if possible.

Reference penile size measurement and correlation with other anthropometric dimensions:a prospective study in 800 men

Virility and sexual pleasure have long been associated with penile size and this,in turn,has typically been linked to some anthropometric measurements,such as foot size or height,leading to various misconceptions from both men and women.Our intention is to estimate penile size parameters in Argentina and evaluate the correlation between penile size and certain anthropometric measurements.This is a cross-sectional,descriptive,multicenter,and observational study.Male patients who underwent a urological procedure were included in four hospitals located in different regions of the country.Different anthropometric measurements were obtained:height,weight,penile circumference,flaccid and stretched length,and foot length.A total of 8o0 patients were evaluated.Mean left foot was 26.4 cm.Mean flaccid penile length was 11.4(95%confidence interval[CI]:8-14)cm,and mean penile circumference was 10.1(95%CI:8-12)cm.Finally,mean stretched penis was 15.2(95%CI:11-18.5)cm.We can confirm that estimates of the average penile measurements in Argentina are flaccid penis length of 11.4 cm,penile circumference of 10.1 cm,and stretching the penis to the maximum in flaccidity of 15.2 cm.Correlations between flaccid penis length,stretched out,penile circumference,height,weight,and length of the left foot were evaluated,finding low or no correlation between those mentioned,exceptforflaccidand stretched length.

Rhinoplasty in Cleft Lip and Palate

Various surgical techniques and approaches have been described to repair cleft nose deformities. It is necessary to consider that since it is a congenital deformity, surgical management must consider the patient’s growth process, as well as the healing itself from the surgery. The present study aims to evaluate an alternative solution to secondary rhinology, aesthetic, and functional alterations to unilateral or bilateral cleft lift palate to minimize deformities and ensure good results. 11 patients were studied between 1995 to 2002, ten male and one female. In 8 cases, the patients had a history of cleft lip and palate on the left side, 2 patients with cleft lift palate on the right, and 1 patient with bilateral cleft lip and palate. 100% of the patients increased their naso-labial angle. This improved their appearance and structure, starting from a preoperative arithmetic mean of 39 degrees to a postoperative arithmetic mean of 96 degrees. Such intervention increased the naso-labial angle by 57 degrees. At the base of the nose, it was possible to improve the inclination of the alar line (line B) in 10 of the cases with a variation of 2 to 3 mm in relation to the perpendicular line A and only one case remained with the same inclination.

Insights into the structural biology of G-protein coupled receptors impacts drug design for central nervous system neurodegenerative processes

In the last few years, there have been important new insights into the structural biology of G-protein coupled receptors. It is now known that allosteric binding sites are involved in the affinity and selec- tivity of ligands for G-protein coupled receptors, and that signaling by these receptors involves both G-protein dependent and independent pathways. The present review outlines the physiological and pharmacological implications of this perspective for the design of new drugs to treat disorders of the central nervous system. Specifically, new possibilities are explored in relation to allosteric and or- thosteric binding sites on dopamine receptors for the treatment of Parkinson＇s disease, and on muscarinic receptors for Alzheimer＇s disease. Future research can seek to identify ligands that can bind to more than one site on the same receptor, or simultaneously bind to two receptors and form a dimer. For example, the design of bivalent drugs that can reach homo/hetero-dimers of D2 dopa- mine receptor holds promise as a relevant therapeutic strategy for Parkinson＇s disease. Regarding the treatment of Alzheimer＇s disease, the design of dualsteric ligands for mono-oligomeric mus- carinic receptors could increase therapeutic effectiveness by generating potent compounds that could activate more than one signaling pathway.

The Claromec o Basin is located at the south-western sector of the Buenos Aires province,Argentina.This basin is considered a foreland basin closely related to the evolution of the southwestern Gondwana margin.This contribution focuses on the provenance analysis of the Tunas Formation(Permian,Pillahuinc o Group),which represents the last filling stage for the Claromec o Foreland Basin.Petrographic and tectonic provenance analyses were performed in sandstones recovered from subsurface(PANG 0001 and PANG0003 exploration wells)and outcrops located close to the basin center(Gonzales Chaves locality).In the subsurface,the analyzed succession is composed of medium-to fine-grained sandstones interbedded with tuffs,mudrocks,carbonaceous mudrocks and coal beds.In outcrops,the succession is dominated by mediumto fine-grained sandstones interbedded with siltstones.Modal composition patterns are distributed into the recycled orogen and transitionally recycled to mixed fields.Petrographic analyses,in addition to provenance and sedimentological studies,confirm that sedimentary material was derived from a mixed source,which largely comes from the Sierras Australes fold and thrust belt,located towards the W-SW,where the sedimentary succession is interbedded with volcanic material.The Tunas Formation shows clear differences in its modal composition,paleocurrent direction and paleoenvironmental conditions with respect to the underlying units of the Pillahuinc o Group(Sauce Grande,Piedra Azul and Bonete formations).Source areas changed from cratonic to mixed fold belt/arc-derived material,suggesting variations in the Claromec o Basin configuration during the Late Paleozoic.Changes in the paleotectonic scenario during the deposition of the Tunas Formation have been interpreted as a consequence of a compressive post-collisional deformation event,the product of adjustment,accommodation and translation of terrains towards the equator during the Permian-Triassic to form Pangea.

Tuberculosis and hematopoietic stem cell transplant: Review of a difficult and often underestimated problem

Recipients of solid organ transplants(SOT) and stem cell transplants(SCT) constitute a group of patients at risk for tuberculosis(TB) development. The prevalence of active TB in patients undergoing SOT is higher than in patients undergoing SCT, probably due to the shorter period of immunosuppression in the latter. We reviewed the importance of SCT in individuals with hematological malignancies. Most TB cases occur in transplant patients by reactivation of latent infection after immunosuppression, most often within the first year after transplant, leading to graft loss and in some cases, death. Relevant variables to assess the risk of TB infection in a transplant recipient include the donor's and recipient's medical histories, imaging results, microbiology and tuberculin skin test(TST) and interferon-gamma release assays(IGRA). TST is routinely performed in the donor and recipient before transplantation. If TST is > 5 mm in the recipient or > 10 mm in the donor, it is necessary to exclude active TB(pulmonary and renal). Chemopro-phylaxis is recommended in TST(+) recipients and in recipients with recent seroconversion, in donors with a history of untreated TB or in contact with an individual with active TB, if radiological images are suspicious and the IGRA is(+). The drug of choice is isoniazid. These topics are herewith reviewed.

Pancreatic Pseudocyst Rupture: Cause of Acute Abdomen

Case report of a 23-year-old male patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst, initially was treated by the Interventional Radiology service by placing percutaneous drainage with poor evolution, abruptly presented abdominal pain, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and peritoneal irritation, so an urgent exploratory laparotomy was performed with a finding of rupture of the pancreatic pseudocyst into the abdominal cavity. He presented septic shock and died in the immediate postoperative period. Computerized Axial Tomography represents the ideal diagnostic method. Spontaneous rupture is extremely rare and requires urgent surgical intervention.
