In insects, juvenile hormone (JH) decreases or has any effect upon the phenoloxidase (PO) activity, and favors or decreases the Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) expression. Although there is no information about the differential effect of such hormone, two possibilities are that it depends on (a) the immune marker recorded and (b) sexual differences. Here, three commonly used immune markers, Phenoloxidase (PO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and lytic activity, were measured 3, 6 and 24 hours after administration of methoprene (JHa, an analog of juvenile hormone) in male and female monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus). At 3 and 6 h post-JHa administration, the PO activity increased in females but it only increased at 3 h in males, whereas H2O2 levels increased only in females at 3 h. For the remaining times the JHa had a null effect on POand H2O2. On the other hand, the JHa had a null effect for lytic activity in both sexes at 3, 6 and 24 h. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a positive effect of a JHa onPOand H2O2 and suggests that this effect is sex dependent.

Acetic acid can be directly produced from glucose in one-step fermentation by using yeasts of the genus Brettanomyces bruxellensis, hence increasing the industrial application to manufacture products with simplified bioprocesses. Thereby, this work evaluates the influence of initial glucose concentration on the growth and acetic acid production by B. bruxellensis. The results obtained confirmed the presence of Crabtree effect on B. bruxellensis under low glucose concentrations. The maximum acetic acid concentration reached was 15.4 g·L-1 starting with 100 g·L-1 leading to a product yield of 0.154 g·g-1 and a specific acetic acid production rate of 0.05 g·g-1·h-1. The results also indicate that after reaching the acetic acid critic threshold of 4 g·L-1 the metabolism can induce the growth second phase even residual glucose was present on the culture media at high starting glucose concentrations. Additionally, it was observed a lineal relationship between cell viability and acetic acid production.

In this study Essential oils were used with cumin, cloves, cinnamon, laurel and anis to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. The MICs were determined on M. tuberculosis H37Rv sensitive to all five firstline antituberculosis drugs (streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pirazinamide), two H37-Rv (CH-8 and CH-15) isoniazid-resistant, two H37Rv (CH-07 and CH-09) rifampicin-resistant, two H37Rv (CH-03 and CH-06) streptomycin-resistant, and two H37Rv (CH-09 and CH-10) ethambutol-resistant using the microplate alamar blue assay. The results obtained showed that the cumin and cinnamon essential oils showed a MIC of 12.5 μg/ml against reference strain H37Rv. The five essential oils used in this study were effective against the isoniazid-resistant variant of H37RV with MIC values in the range 12.5-100 μg/ml, the most potent being the cumin and cin-namon (MIC = 12.5). Similar results were obtained against rifampicin-resistant variant of H37RV with MIC values in the range 12.5-100 μg/ml;the most active ones?in this case were the essential oils of cumin and cloves. The essential oils of anis and laurel were active with MIC value to 100 μg/ml. Clove, cumin, and cinnamon essential oils were active against all strains utilized in this study, with MIC values in the range 6.25 μg/ml to 25 μg/ml.

Total body irradiation (TBI) is conditioning regimen in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a very high risk of relapse or in those who have not achieved remission and have relapsed and subsequently received allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). A retrospective evaluation of 33 ALL patients in full remission with an indication of HSCT was performed to evaluate overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS). The inclusion criteria included a myeloablative conditioning regimen of TBI at a dose of 600 cGy. The observed OS at 5 years was 50%, and the EFS of 32% we observed difference in the EFS stem cell origin;the peripheral blood (PB) 60%, and the umbilical cord blood (UC) accounted for 40%. Overall, 45% had a documented chimerism. The OS at 5 years from patients with chimeras was 75%, while those without chimeras had an OS at 5 years of 25%. The mortality in the first 100 days was 24%. A total of 24.2% of children presented with acute graft versus-host disease (GVHD), while 33% had chronic GVHD. Currently, there is no general agreement among all international centers regarding the optimum TBI dose. Our study reports an acceptable range of adverse events with a relatively low dose of 600 cGy.

The protein intake of the population in the Yucatan Peninsula is based upon the different forms of beans naturally developed. The different ecotypes of creole beans that are grown traditionally have been displaced by improved varieties, thereby turning into a risk of losing a valuable source of germ-plasma. The present study is aimed to identify, collect and preserve several bean species genetic resources grown in Campeche, Mexico, in addition to the development of an identification card with the main phenotypic characteristics and yield components. A total of 33 different samples were collected from nine different municipalities statewide;out of those, 15 were Phaseolus vulgaris and 18 Phaseolus lunatus. The collected samples diversity is reflected in the range of growth habits from the bush to the indeterminate climbing species, being these the most representative with about 29 samples, many of those because of the way the planting is carried out, which is traditionally performed in association with the cultivation of corn. Early samples were identified in this diversity with their cycle ranging from 60 to 120 days after emergence. Samples of Phaseolus lunatus with 1.35 to 2.86 t/ha yield potential were also obtained.

A sample of 76 older adults (27 with diabetes and 49 without diabetes) were selected to judge three information factors, metamemory related to—drug organization—stress and physical activity in relation to their perception of self-care. In order to do so, an Integration Information Theory was considered to determine systematic cognitive algebra rules underlying judgment about 24 different health self-care scenarios. Results indicate that older adults without diabetes use a summative cognitive rule to integrate relevant health information but older adults with diabetes do not. Both groups agreed that metamemory was the most relevant factor to their self-care followed by stress and physical activity. However, valuation of these factors does depend on the type of group. Implications of these results to healthcare a behavioral nursing intervention are discussed in this paper.
