Succession of bacteria communities during production and application of dairy bedding by membrane-covered aerobic fermentation

The cost of dairy manure treatment and bedding material purchase increases the operating cost of the dairy ***-covered aerobic fermentation system has been widely used for dealing with dairy manure and recycling the final product as bedding ***,the microbial safety in each processing step is still *** better understand the bacterial community dynamics during the whole bedding conversion process,a full-chain and large-scale experiment including 16-day membrane-covered aerobic fermentation and 11-day bedding material application was *** results showed that the pile temperatures in the fermentation stage rapidly increased to 80°C and maintained>50°C for more than 11 days and the use of fermentation product as bedding material provided cows with a stable and comfortable bedding *** Chao1 and Shannon index decreased at the end of the fermentation stage and remained stable in the application stage,indicating that membrane-covered aerobic fermentation effectively killed some pathogenic bacteria and guaranteed both the maturity and stability of the final *** dominant bacteria in the fermentation stage were Acinetobacter,Thermus,and Rhodothermus at genus *** common potential pathogens of mastitis(Staphylococcus,Enterococcus,Serratia,Pseudomonas,Corynebacterium,Mycobacterium,and Bacillus)were found at the end of fermentation stage but the relative abundance was low(0.0025%-0.2727%).The dominant bacteria in the application stage mainly included Acinetobacter,Pseudomonas,and Flavobacterium at the genus *** relative abundance of Pseudomonas increased in the application stage,which was a reminder to the dairy farm to pay attention to the disinfection and timely replacement of bedding material to prevent the occurrence of dairy *** results of this study contributed deep understanding of the microorganism-driven bedding conversion process and provide practical guidance and cautions for the bedding

Evaluating a river's ecological health: A multidimensional approach

Evaluating the health of river surface water is essential,as rivers support significant biological resources and serve as vital drinking water *** the Water Quality Index(WQI)is commonly employed to evaluate surface water quality,it fails to consider biodiversity and does not fully capture the ecological health of *** we show a comprehensive assessment of the ecological health of surface water in the lower Yangtze River(LYR),integrating chemical and biological *** to traditional WQI metrics,the LYR's surface water generally meets China's Class II ***,it also contains 43 high-risk emerging contaminants;nitrobenzenes are found at the highest concentrations,representing 25e90%of total detections,while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons present the most substantial environmental risks,accounting for 81e93%of the total risk ***,the plankton-based index of biological integrity(P-IBI)rates the ecological health of the majority of LYR water samples(59.7%)as‘fair’,with significantly better health observed in autumn compared to other seasons(p<0.01).Our findings suggest that including emerging contaminants and P-IBI as additional metrics can enhance the traditional WQI analysis in evaluating surface water's ecological *** results highlight the need for a multidimensional assessment approach and call for improvements to LYR's ecological health,focusing on emerging contaminants and biodiversity rather than solely on reducing conventional indicators.

Effects of the windshield inclination angle on head/brain injuries in car-to-pedestrian collisions using computational biomechanics models

Car-to-pedestrian collision(CPC)accidents occur frequently,and pedestrians often suffer serious head/brain *** major cause is the primary impact with the ***,we use an umerical sim ulation method to study the influence of the windshield in-clination angle of a passenger car on pedestrian head/brain injury due to CPC *** range of the windshield inclination angle was set at 24°-50°,with an interval of 2°.The results show that the windshield angle significantly affects the pedestrian kine-matics and exerts different effects on the head injury when evaluating with various head injury *** the head peak linear/rotational acceleration and acceleration-based head injury criterion(HIC)/rotational injury criterion(RIC),the predictions at the secondary impact stage have no clear relationship with the windshield angle(R^(2)=0.04,0.07,0.03 and 0.26,respectively)and their distributions are *** the primary impact,the peak linear acceleration and HIC show a weak trend of first decreasing and then increasing with the increasing of the windshield angle,and the rotational acceleration and RIC tend to remain relatively *** the cum ulative strain dama ge measure(CSDM)criterion,the predictions at the primary impact are slightly lower than those at the secondary impact,and the trend of first decreasing and then increasing with the increase in the windshield angle is observed at both impact *** the windshield inclination angle is approximately 32°-40°,the head injury severity in both impact phases is generally lower than that predicted at other windshield angles.

*** Cities are responsible for approximately 70%of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions and about 60%of all anthropogenic methane(CH4)emissions[1,2].Solid waste disposal sites(including landfills and dumpsites),which are prevalent in global cities,emit CH4 generated from the anaerobic biodegradation of municipal solid waste(MSW).Notably,the proportions of CH4 emissions from disposal sites surpass 50%of the total CH4 emissions in some megalopolises[3].CH4 has a high global warming potential(GWP),being 28 times stronger than carbon dioxide(CO_(2))over a 100-year period and 80 times stronger over a 20-year period[4].Understanding and mitigating CH4 emissions from solid waste disposal sites is particularly pertinent and pressing,considering that the latest Synthesis Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)emphasizes that the current pace of mitigation and adaptation policies and measures falls short of restraining global temperature rise to under 1.5℃ within the 21st century[4].More than 150 countries signed the Global Methane Pledge at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow(COP26),which aims to reduce global annual CH4 emissions by 30%by 2030,compared with emissions in 2020[5].

Quantifying source-sink relationships in leaf-color modified rice genotypes during grain filling

Leaf-color modification can affect canopy photosynthesis,with potential effects on rice yield and yield *** source-sink relationships through crop management is often used to improve crop *** study investigated whether and how modifying leaf color alters source-sink relationships and whether current crop cultivation practices remain applicable for leaf-color modified *** collected data of total biomass and nitrogen(N)accumulation in rice genotypes of four genetic backgrounds and their leaf-color modified variants(greener or yellower)were analyzed,using a recently established modelling method to quantify the source-sink(im)balance during grain *** all leaf-color variants,only one yellower-leaf variant showed a higher source capacity than its normal *** was associated with greater post-flowering N-uptake that prolonged the functional leaf-N duration,and this greater post-flowering N-uptake was possible because of reduced pre-flowering N-uptake.A density experiment showed that current management practices(insufficient planting density accompanied by abundant N application)are unsuitable for the yellower-leaf genotype,ultimately limiting its yield ***-color modification affects source-sink relationships by regulating the N trade-off between pre-and post-flowering uptake,as well as N translocation between source and sink *** best exploit leaf-color modification for improving crop productivity,adjustments of crop management practices are required.

Electro-coalescence of heterogeneous paired-droplets under AC electric field

Controllable droplet coalescence exhibits unique advantages and intriguing prospect in chemical synthesis and biological *** researches focusing on the droplets of the same physics are,however,limited in terms of the interaction between different *** this work,the electro-coalescence of heterogeneous paireddroplets is investigated in a microfluidic chip controlled by an AC electric *** characteristics of merging dynamics are analyzed under different electric conditions and fluid properties,and an on-chip cross-linking reaction is conducted to enable the instantaneous production of hydrogel *** find that the coalescence of heterogeneous paired-droplets expands the range of start positions and prolongs the merging time compared to homogeneous *** evolution process of interfaces is accelerated with the increasing voltage,which contributes to the mixing of diverse *** electrical conductivities lead to distinct internal mechanisms within *** voltage across the droplet is reduced with the increasing conductivity,while the enhanced attraction between free charges plays a complimentary role in interface *** the surface tension reduced the required electric conditions for *** with the non-Newtonian property,the droplet presents a non-linear relationship in the coalescence region,triggering coalescence with filaments at low voltages and showcasing superior performance at high *** on above findings,we successfully produce alginate hydrogel microspheres with a wide range of concentrations in high monodispersity,achieving a clean fabrication of pure hydrogel without any additives and no need for subsequent *** results reveal the electro-hydrodynamics of heterogeneous paireddroplets,promoting the development of droplet coalescence in chemical and material science.

Porous organic polymers(POPs)have attracted extensive interest due to their structural diversity and predesigned ***,the majority of POPs are synthesized as insoluble and unprocessable powders,which greatly impede their advanced applications because of limited mass transport and inadaptation for device ***,we report a controlled synthetic strategy of macroscopic POP gels by a cation-stabilized colloidal formation mechanism,which is widely adaptable to a large variety of tetra-/tri-amino build blocks for the synthesis of Tröger’s base-linked POP gels,aerogels,and ionic *** POP gels combined the integrated advantages of hierarchically porous structures and tailorable mechanical stiffness,whereas they could load substantial amounts of phosphoric acids and construct unimpeded transport pathways for proton conduction,exhibiting unprecedented proton conductivity at subzero *** strategy offers a new solution to the intractable processing issues of POPs toward device applications with cutting-edge performances.

A variety of research reports on novel supramolecular topologies have been published over the last ***,it is still a great challenge to tap into the inner functional properties of these ***,two tetranuclear metallamacrocycles 1 and 2 and four octonuclear[2]catenanes 3-6 were constructed successfully via a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy,by conscious design and use of the tetramethyl bidentate pyridine ligand L1,and the appropriate selection of six binuclear half-sandwich rhodium building units with different longitudinal *** complexes have been fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and NMR ***,near-infrared photothermal studies of the obtained[2]catenanes reveal different photothermal response in solid and solution states,which may be attributed to a strong fluorescence quenching effect of the half-sandwich organometallic fragment and different conjugated effect of Cp^(*)Rh based building blocks in the interlocking *** photothermal conversion efficiencies of[2]catenanes 4-6 fall in the range 30.5%-16.5% *** contribution aims to play a key role in the experimental development of Cp^(*)-based photothermal materials.
