In this study,complete tetracycline(TTC)and above 50%of total organic carbon(TOC)were removed by Fe S/PS after 30 min under optimized conditions.Although free radicals and high-valent iron ions were identified to generate in the process,the apparent similarity between intermediate products of Fe S/PS,Fe/PS,and UV/PS systems demonstrated that the degradation of TTC was due to sulfate radicals(SO_(4)·^(-))and hydroxyl radicals(·OH).Based on the reaction between free radicals and organic matter,we speculated that TTC in the Fe S/PS system was decomposed and mineralized by dehydration,dehydrogenation,hydroxyl addition,demethylation,substitution,E-transfer,and ring-opening.Furthermore,a new understanding of Fe S-mediated PS activation based on stoichiometry and kinetic analysis showed that there were both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions that occurred in the entire progress.However,due to the effect of p H on the dissolution of iron ions,the homogeneous reaction became the principal process with iron ions concentration exceeding 1.35 mg/L.This work provides a theoretical basis for the study of the degradation of TTC-containing wastewater by the iron-based advanced oxidation process.

Based on a large sample of massive(M* 1010 M⊙) compact galaxies at 1.0 < z < 3.0 in five 3 D-HST/CANDELS fields, we quantify the fractional abundance and comoving number density of massive compact galaxies as a function of redshift. The samples of compact quiescent galaxies(cQGs) and compact star-forming galaxies(cSFGs) are constructed by various selection criteria of compact galaxies in the literature, and the effect of compactness definition on abundance estimate has proven to be remarkable,particularly for the cQGs and cSFGs at high redshifts. Regardless of the compactness criteria adopted,their overall redshift evolutions of fractional abundance and number density are found to be rather similar.Large samples of the cQGs exhibit a sustained increase in number density from z ~ 3 to 2 and a plateau at 1 < z < 2. For massive cSFGs, a plateau in the number density at 2 < z < 3 can be found, as well as a continuous drop from z ~ 2 to 1. The evolutionary trends of the cQG and cSFG abundances support the scenario that the cSFGs at z≥ 2 may have been rapidly quenched into quiescent phase via violent dissipational processes, such as major merger and disk instabilities. The rarity of the cSFGs at lower redshifts(z < 1) can be interpreted by the decrease of gas reservoirs in dark matter halos and the consequent low efficiency of gas-rich dissipation.

Fog may continue to inhibit industry in the future.Here,we focused on a specific advection fog event in Shanghai,China,and applied a pseudo global warming method to examine advection fog under the RCP8.5 highemission scenario.The method involved downscaling the future atmospheric conditions over the ensemble average of 19 global climate models from the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5).We used the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with a single-layer urban canopy model(WRF‒UCM)to run four sensitivity experiments and examined the advection fog and its relationship to changes in meteorological conditions.The results showed that:1)The advection fog event tended to remain in Shanghai despite global warming;2)advection fog will not change greatly in the future;however,the onset and dissipation times will change slightly;3)relative humidity(RH)locally increases prior to the onset of the advection fog,and decreases at the dissipating stage,despite the current and future experiments having the same RH initial and boundary conditions;4)a small increase in surface air temperature and an increase in RH contribute to the early advection fog onset,and vice versa.Windspeed facilitates the early onset and dissipation of advection fog.

Does empowering women benefit poverty reduction?Evidence from a multi-component program in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China

Ending poverty is a top priority of the international development agenda,and governments worldwide have attached great importance to poverty alleviation measures.However,poverty reduction policies have mostly focused on men,which has widened the gap in productivity and income between men and women and increased gender inequality.This paper aims to determine the impacts of a multi-component program on women's empowerment and poverty reduction,and explore the role empowered women play in poverty reduction.The dataset used in this study was collected in nine poor counties of Ulanqab City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China at the end of 2014,yielding a sample of 900 households.Recall questions were used to reconstruct the baseline data and build a panel dataset.Smaller groups of rural households were further identified to better target the women in the beneficiary group.To control the selection bias,propensity score matching,inverse probability weighting,and the difference-in-differences matching method were used to analyze the effect of the program and undertake robust checks.The results show that the program has positive effects on women's empowerment and poverty reduction simultaneously.Empowering women also has positive effects on poverty reduction,and the women who were the beneficiaries have contributed to increasing the incomes and living standards of households.Training,microfinance,and associations are common means or strategies to empower women to address poverty.This paper provides new empirical evidence that women can benefit from a gender-focus program through portfolio intervention such as training,cooperatives,and credit.Empowered women further improve the livelihoods of poor households and help lift them out of poverty.The results suggest that researchers and policymakers need to pay more attention to poverty issues from the perspective of gender.

Convection Initiation of a Heavy Rainfall Event in the Coastal Metropolitan Region of Shanghai on the South Side of the Meiyu Front

Accurate prediction of the convection initiation(CI)in urban areas is still a challenge.A heavy rainfall event,missed by the 9-km regional operational modeling system,occurred in the coastal urban area of the Shanghai metropolitan region(SMR)in the late morning on 28 July 2020 on the warm side to the south of the Meiyu front.In this study,observational analyses and convection-permitting simulations with a resolution of 3 km were conducted to investigate the CI mechanism of this rainfall event.The results showed that the CI was due to the interaction of urban heat island(UHI),northwesterly outflows from the Meiyu front precipitation system(MFPS),and northeasterly sea winds.First,the UHI created a lifting condition producing adiabatic cooling and the vertical moisture transport in the urban region.Then,the mesolow generated by the UHI induced and enhanced local low-level convergence near the CI region and accelerated the northwesterly outflows and the northeasterly sea winds as they converged to the UHI.The convection was triggered as a result of the strengthened low-level convergence when the enhanced northwesterly outflows and northeasterly sea winds approached the updraft zone caused by the UHI center.Sensitivity experiments with either the urban area of the SMR removed or the MFPS suppressed further revealed that the enhancement of the low-level convergence was mainly contributed by the UHI.The outflows and sea winds transported cold and moist air to the CI region and partly offset the negative contribution of the urban drying effect to the low-level relative humidity to facilitate the development of the deep moist absolute unstable layer during the CI.In addition,the MFPS also contributed to the enhancement of the northeasterly sea winds by influencing the land–sea pressure contrast on the north of the SMR.

目的探讨基于镜像神经元理论指导的视频示范训练对脑卒中后执行功能障碍患者的效果。方法 2014年7月~2015年7月40例住院脑卒中后执行功能障碍患者分为对照组（n=20）和观察组（n=20）。对照组予常规执行功能康复训练,观察组先看相应训练动作的示范视频,再进行训练。治疗前后两组采用执行功能缺陷综合征行为学评价（BADS）进行评定。结果治疗后,观察组除规则转换卡片测验、找钥匙测验外,其余各分项评分及测验总分均较对照组提高（t〉2.9,P〈0.05）。结论基于镜像神经元理论的镜像视频示范训练对脑卒中执行功能障碍患者有效。

Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy(V-PDT)is an effective treatment for port wine stains(PWS).However,repeated treatment is usually needed to achieve optimal treatment outcomes,possibly due to the limited treatment light penetration depth in the PWS lesion.The optical clearing technique can increase light penetration in depth by reducing light scattering.This study aimed to investigate the V-PDT in combination with an optical clearing agent(OCA)for the therapeutic enhancement of V-PDT in the rodent skinfold window chamber model.Vascular responses were closely monitored with laser speckle contrast imaging(LSCI),optical coherence tomography angiography,and stereo microscope before,during,and after the treatment.We further quantitatively demonstrated the effects of V-PDT in combination with OCA on the blood flow and blood vessel size of skin microvasculature.The combination of OCA and V-PDT resulted in significant vascular damage,including vasoconstriction and the reduction of blood flow.Our results indicate the promising potential of OCA for enhancing V-PDT for treating vascular-related diseases,including PWS.

A study on carbon emission calculation in operation stage of residential buildings based on micro electricity usage behavior:Three case studies in China

Along with the improvement of social productivity and living standard,residential buildings generate a growing portion of carbon emissions,especially during the operation stage.However,energy use behaviors are usually ignored in carbon emission calculation.This study focuses on calculating carbon emissions during the operation stage for residential buildings based on the characteristics of energy use behaviors in different regions.Firstly,we investigated energy use behaviors in dwellings across three cities in China:Xi'an,Shanghai and Fuzhou.Then,we established calibrated carbon emission models and optimization models with different green building measures for residential buildings.The results of this research reveal a significant disparity between the energy usage habits of residents in different climate regions.The carbon emissions of residential electricity bills in Xi'an,Shanghai and Fuzhou are 13.6 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a)(excluding central heating),29.3 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a)and 17.2 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a),respectively.Equipment carbon emissions account for 32.2%-64.1% of the total.In comparison to the model based on internal standard setting,the accuracy of the models using actual internal has improved by 25.9%-37.4%.The three-star green building methods have the highest carbon reduction rate among different star buildings,the emission reduction rates are around 30%.This study's findings are useful for carbon emission calculation and green building design of residential buildings in the future.

Dear Editor,p53 acts as a transcription factor to modulate various types of cellular processes to suppress tumor development(Tackmann and Zhang,2017).The exquisite regulation of p53 functions is of vital importance for cell fate decisions.Although it is well accepted that p53-mediated cell-cycle arrest,senescence,and apoptosis serve as major tumor suppression mechanisms,recent studies suggest that other unconventional activities such as ferroptosis are also critically involved in its tumor suppressor function(Li et al.,2012).We and others found that p53 plays an important role in modulating ferroptotic responses through its metabolic targets(Jiang et al.,2015;Jennis et al.,2016;Wang et al.,2016).Ferroptosis is a regulated form of iron-dependent,non-apoptotic cell death characterized by excessive reactive oxygen species(ROS)generation and accumulation of lipid peroxidates(Stockwell et al.,2020).Lipid peroxides are normally eliminated by glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4)and its co-factor glutathione(GSH),which convert lipid hydroperoxides to non-toxic lipid alcohols.Thus,ferroptosis can be artificially induced by pharmacological agents that disrupt this lipid repair system,allowing lethal accumulation of lipid peroxides.Such agents include direct GPX4 enzymatic inhibitors,as well as the small molecule erastin,which suppress glutathione synthesis and indirectly suppress GPX4 activation(Stockwell et al.,2020).Although activation of p53 expression is able to modulate ferroptosis induced by GPX4 inhibition in certain cell types(Jiang et al.,2015),p53-mediated ferroptotic responses are also observed upon ROS-induced stress,apparently through a GPX4-independent manner(Chu et al.,2019).Nevertheless,the molecular factors that modulate p53-dependent ferroptosis upon ROS stress need further elucidation.Sirt3 is a NAD-dependent deacetylase predominantly localized in mitochondria,which functions in multiple metabolic pathways,including electron transport chain,fatty acid oxidation,amino acid metabolism,redox balance,and the trica

In the face of the corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,it is essential to stabilize the security of urban“shopping baskets”.Through a survey and interviews with 46 agricultural cooperatives in Shanghai,this paper analyzes the impact of the pandemic on vegetable production and offers suggestions on agricultural insurance.The research results show that:(1)the pandemic has impacted almost all stages of the vegetable supply chain but has had a greater impact on the sales stage;(2)the market risks of vegetable production have increased significantly,and the gap between the field price and the market price has widened.The sales price difference between traditional channels and e-commerce is notable;(3)farmers’incomes have generally declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic,and traditional small-scale farmers have suffered more losses;and(4)agricultural insurance plays an important role in stabilizing the supply of vegetables to the city.To minimize the impact of the pandemic on vegetable production and to stabilize both urban“shopping baskets”and farmers’incomes,it is necessary to further improve agricultural insurance,especially to provide insurance against market risks.
