Vitamin A regulates intramuscular adipose tissue and muscle development:promoting high-quality beef production

During growth in cattle,the development of intramuscular adipose tissue and muscle is dependent upon cell hyperplasia(increased number of adipocytes)and hypertrophy(increased size of adipocytes).Based on the results of previous studies,other adipose tissue depots(e.g.,perirenal and subcutaneous)develop from the fetal stage primarily as brown adipose *** hyperplastic stage of intramuscular adipose is considered to develop from late pregnancy,but there is no evidence indicating that intramuscular adipose tissue develops initially as brown adipose *** growth of intramuscular adipose continues well into postweaning and is dependent on the timing of the transition to grain-based diets;thereafter,the late-stage development of intramuscular adipose tissue is dominated by *** muscle development,hyperplasia of myoblasts lasts from early(following development of somites in the embryo)to middle pregnancy,after which growth of muscle is the result of hypertrophy of *** A is a fat-soluble compound that is required for the normal immunologic function,vision,cellular proliferation,and *** we review the roles of vitamin A in intramuscular adipose tissue and muscle development in *** A regulates both hyperplasia and hypertrophy in in vitro *** A supplementation at the early stage and restriction at fattening stage generate opposite effects in the beef *** vitamin A supplementation and restriction strategy increase intramuscular adipose tissue development(i.e.,marbling or intramuscular fat)in some in vivo ***,hyperplasia and hypertrophy of myoblasts/myotubes were affected by vitamin A treatment in in vitro ***,some studies reported an interaction between the alcohol dehydrogenase-1C(ADH1C)genotype and vitamin A feed restriction for the development of marbling and/or intramuscular adipose tissue,which was dependent on the timing and level of vitamin A

Evaluation of Holstein cows with different tongue‑rolling frequencies:stress immunity,rumen environment and general behavioural activity

Background The tongue-rolling behaviour of cows is regarded as an outward sign of stressed animals in a low welfare *** primary aim of this observational study was to evaluate the association between the frequency of tongue-rolling behaviour and its physiological *** secondary aim was to explore the relationship between general activities and the frequency of tongue-rolling behaviour of cows.A total of 126 scan sampling behavioural observations were collected over 7 d on 348 Holstein cows with the same lactation stage in the same *** tongue-rolling frequency was defined as the number of tongue-rolling observations as a percentage to the total observations per individual *** to their tongue-rolling frequency,the cows were grouped into the CON(no tongue-rolling),LT(frequency 1%),MT(frequency 5%),and HT(frequency 10%)*** cows from each group were randomly selected for *** samples,rumen fluid,milk yield,and background infor-mation were *** general behaviour data during 72 continuous hours of dairy cows,including eating time,rumination time,food time(eating time+rumination time),and lying time,were recorded by the collar *** Cortisol(P=0.012),γ-hydroxybutyric acid(P=0.008),epinephrine(P=0.030),and dopamine(P=0.047)levels were significantly higher in tongue-rolling groups than in the CON *** levels and tongue-rolling frequency had a moderate positive correlation(linearly r=0.363).With the increase in tongue-rolling frequency,the rumen pH decreased first and then increased(P=0.013),comparing to the CON *** cows had significantly less food time than CON cows(P=0.035).The frequency of tongue-rolling had a moderate negative relationship with rumination time(r=-0.384)and food time(r=-0.492).Conclusions The tongue-rolling behaviour is considered as a passive coping mechanism,as the stress response in cows with high tongue-rolling frequency *** intake and rumination activities were a

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis and Fatigue Study of Steep Wave Risers Under Irregular Loads

As a reliable alternative option for traditional steel catenary risers(SCRs),steep wave risers(SWRs)have been widely applied to deepwater oil and gas ***,the nonlinear dynamic analysis of SWRs is more complicated than that of traditional SCRs due to their special configuration and significant geometric ***,SWRs are highly susceptible to fatigue failure under the combined excitation of irregular waves and top floater motions(TFMs).In this study,considering irregular waves and TFMs,a numerical SWR model with an internal flow is constructed based on the slender rod model and finite element *** Newmark-βmethod is adopted to solve the dynamic behavior of ***,the Palmgren-Miner rule,a specified S-N curve,and rainflow counting method are applied to estimate the fatigue *** efficient numerical computation procedure,i.e.,DRSWR,is programmed with MATLAB in this *** results are compared with those of OrcaFlex to verify the accuracy of the *** nonlinear dynamic response and fatigue damage of an SWR under the combined excitation of irregular waves and TFMs are obtained,and a comprehensive parametric analysis is then *** analysis results show that the buoyancy section undergoes the highest level of stress and fatigue damage under the combined excitation of irregular waves and *** internal flow with high velocity and high density produces a high level of fatigue *** buoyancy factor and length of the buoyancy section should be set moderately to reconcile the reduction of the top tension with increased fatigue *** results are expected to provide some reference significance for the engineering design of SWR.

Regulation effect of the grille spacing of a funnel-type grating water–sediment separation structure on the debris flow performance

The size of pores or the grille spacing of water–sediment separation structures directly affects their regulation effect on the debris flow performance.A suitable pore size or grille spacing can effectively improve the water–sediment separation ability of the *** new funnel-type grating water–sediment separation structure(FGWSS)combines vertical and horizontal structures and provides a satisfactory water–sediment separation ***,the regulation effect of the grille spacing of the structure on the debris flow performance has not been *** regulation effect of the structure grille spacing on the debris flow performance is studied through a flume test,and the optimal structure grille spacing is *** empirical equation of the relationship between the relative grille spacing of the structure and the sediment separation rate is ***,the influence of the water–sediment separation structure on the regulation effect of debris flows is examined from two aspects:external factors(properties of debris flows)and internal factors(structural factors).The experimental results show that the gradation characteristics of solid particles in debris flows constitute a key factor affecting the regulation effect of the structure on the debris flow *** optimum grille spacing of the FGWSS matches the particle size corresponding to the material distribution curves d85~d90 of the debris *** total separation rate of debris flow particles is related to the grille spacing of the structure and the content of coarse and fine particles in the debris flow.

Starved lubrication analysis of angular contact ball bearing based on a multi-degree-of-freedom tribo-dynamic model

When the oil supply is not adequate to maintain the ideal lubrication,angular contact ball bearing will enter into the starved lubrication regime resulting in the potential performance degradation and consequently the severe *** study the effects of starved lubrication on the performance of angular contact ball bearing,this paper first proposes a multi-degree-of-freedom(DOF)tribo-dynamic model by introducing five-DOF inner ring,six-DOF balls,and six-DOF *** model considers the starved lubrication in the ball-raceway contact and the full multi-body interactions between the bearing *** different ball-raceway starvation degrees being analyzed,the effects of starved lubrication on the bearing tribo-dynamic performance are first *** comparison,it is found that the oil film thickness,the skidding performance,and the traction forces in the ball-raceway contact are significantly influenced by the starvation *** is also found that the starvation-induced change of the ball-pocket contact force is dramatical under combined loads,and the maximum contact force under this load condition increases with the increasing starvation degrees.
