Abstract Male body size can play an important role in the mating systems of anuran amphibians. We conducted labora- tory-based trials with cane toads Rhinella （Bufo） marina from an invasive population in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia, to clarify the effects of a male＇s body size on his reproductive success and behavior （mate choice）. Males were stimulated with a synthetic hormone to induce reproductive readiness. Larger body size enhanced a male toad＇s ability to displace a smaller rival from amplexus, apparently because of physical strength： more force was required to dislodge a larger than a smaller amplectant male. A male＇s body size also affected his mate-choice criteria. Males of all body sizes were as likely to attempt amplexus with another male as with a female of the same size, and preferred larger rather than smaller sexual targets. However, this size prefe- rence was stronger in larger males and hence, amplexus was size-assortative. This pattern broke down when males were given access to already-amplectant male-female pairs： males of all body sizes readily attempted amplexus with the pair, with no size discrimination. An amplectant pair provides a larger visual stimulus, and prolonged amplexus provides a strong cue for sex iden- tification （one of the individuals involved is almost certainly a female）. Thus, a male cane toad＇s body size affects both his ability to defeat rivals in physical struggles over females, and the criteria he uses when selecting potential mates, but the impacts of that selectivity depend upon the context in which mating occurs

Increased lifespan is one of society’s greatest achievements,but this longevity increases the prevalence of diseases of aging,such as neurological ***,neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of deaths(Feigin et al.,2019).Furthermore,these diseases affect people in low-,medium-,and high-income countries(Feigin et al.,2019).Current technology to modify neurological burden is scarce,which poses numerous challenges for healthcare,global policy,and economic stability(Feigin et al.,2019).To face these challenges,brain stimulation technology,such as transcranial electrical stimulation(TEs),has displayed exciting *** et al.(2017)provide a detailed overview of the safety and application of ***,electrodes are attached to the head and a weak current(e.g.,1-2 mA)is applied through the scalp,skull,and into the brain for 10-30 minutes to activate neurons(Antal et al.,2017).The technique is extremely safe with no serious adverse effects reported from thousands of sessions(Antal et al.,2017).The most common side effects are a tingling/itching sensation or redness at the stimulation site(Antal et al.,2017).However,these side effects can be minimized by reducing the electrode-skin impedance,slowly ramping up and ramping down TEs,or using topical analgesics(Antal et al.,2017).The development of TEs may repair neural dysfunction and stem the oncoming incidence of neurodegenerative disease.

In this essay, I take the recent publication of several texts examining the historical and contemporary phenomena of sinophobia, Orientalism, and sinologism as an opening for theorizing underlying and related issues including pervasive anti-China biases in Western journalism and China＇s position therein. In addition to illustrating how the concepts of Orientalism arise from Western historical and epistemological foundations, I theorize what I call a ＂new yellow journalism＂ that has grown in tandem with ＂China＇s rise＂ and the threat this indicates to many Western observers, and how this threat and others like it have been met in the age of ＂new imperialism.＂ I compare this new phenomenon with its historical antecedents, ＂yellow journalism＂ and America＇s emergence as a imperialism power with the spanish-American War （1898）, and note several key insights offered by recent critical analyses of that period, which together suggest a confluence of different players, including policymakers, new media business models, and what I describe as a type of public ＂corporatism＂ in which citizens, particularly Americans, function effectively as shareholders in maintaining hegemonic if not imperialist power.

We present some new methods for parameterizing the triangle mesh surface （TMs） which result from the Marching Cubes （MC） algorithm. The methods apply to surfaces of genus zero and the parameter domain is a unit sphere. We take advantage of some special properties of the TMs resulting from the MC algorithm to obtain simple, computational efficient representations of the nearest neighbor coordinates and utilize these coordinates in the characterization of the parameterization by means of systems of equations which are solved iteratively. Examples and comparisons are presented.

Purpose This cross-sectional study investigated dynamic force-time variables and vaulting performance in young female gymnasts of different maturity *** 120 gymnasts aged 5-14 years were sub-divided into maturity groupings using percent of predicted adult height(%PAH)*** performed three jumping protocols,the squat jump(sJ),countermovement jump(CMJ)and drop jump(DJ),before completing straight jump vaults that were recorded using two-dimensional *** Jumping performance improved with biological maturity evidenced by the most mature gymnasts’producing sig-nificantly more absolute force(P0.78),impulse(P0.75)and power(P0.91)than the least mature group,resulting in the greater jump heights(P0.70).While,no significant differences were observed in relative peak force across multiple tests,measures of relative peak power did significantly increase with *** upon regression analyses,maturation was found to influence vertical take-off velocity during vaulting,explaining 41%of the variance in each jumping *** all tests,the DJ was found to have the highest predictive ability of vaulting vertical take-off velocity,explaining 55%of the total *** Biological maturation impacts jump height and underpinning mechanical variables in young female *** vertical take-off velocity appears to be influenced by maturation and various dynamic force-time variables,par-ticularly those during DJ,which had the highest explained total variance.

The archetypal 3d Mott insulator hematite,Fe_(2)O_(3),is one of the basic oxide components playing an important role in mineralogy of Earth’s lower *** high pressure-temperature behavior,such as the electronic properties,equation of state,and phase stability is of fundamental importance for understanding the properties and evolution of the Earth’s ***,we study the electronic structure,magnetic state,and lattice stability of Fe_(2)O_(3)at ultra-high pressures using the density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory(DFT+DMFT)*** the vicinity of a Mott transition,Fe_(2)O_(3) is found to exhibit a series of complex electronic,magnetic,and structural *** particular,it makes a phase transition to a metal with a post-perovskite crystal structure and site-selective local moments upon compression above 75 *** show that the site-selective phase transition is accompanied by a charge disproportionation of Fe ions,with Fe^(3±δ)and δ~0.05–0.09,implying a complex interplay between electronic correlations and the *** results suggest that site-selective local moments in Fe_(2)O_(3) persist up to ultra-high pressures of~200–250 GPa,i.e.,sufficiently above the core-mantle *** latter can have important consequences for understanding of the velocity and density anomalies in the Earth’s lower mantle.

All plants including cotton host a wide range of microorganisms as endophytes. There is a growing appreciation of the prevalence, ecological significance and management potential of facultative fungal endophytes in protecting plants from pests, pathogens and environmental stressors. Hemipteran sucking bugs have emerged as major pests across the U.s. cotton belt, reducing yields directly by feeding on developing reproductive structures and indirectly by vectoring plant pathogens. We used no-choice and simultaneous choice assays to examine the host selection behavior of western tarnished plant bugs （Lygus hesperus） and southern green stink bugs （Nezara viridula） in response to developing flower buds and fruits from cotton plants colonized by 1 of 2 candidate beneficial fungal endophytes, Phialemonium inflatum or Beauveria bassiana. Both insect species exhibited strong negative responses to flower buds （L. hesperus） and fruits （N. viridula） from plants that had been colonized by candidate endophytic fungi relative to control plants under both no-choice and choice conditions. Behavioral responses of both species indicated that the insects were deterred prior to contact with plant tissues from endophyte-colonized plants, suggesting a putative role for volatile compounds in mediating the negative response. Our results highlight the role of fungal endophytes as plant mutualists that can have positive effects on plant resistance to pests.
