Alzheimer’s Disease: An Analysis of Gender Effects

Alzheimer’s disease is a dreaded outcome that affects both men and women in later years of life. While root causes of this form of dementia are not clear, various factors are known that contribute to the risk of development and the reduction in risks based on gender and our choices in life. This paper evaluates the various factors that affect the risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease as we age. The focus of this paper is gender considerations in a mathematical model programmed in Excel. The model was first presented by gregory [1] and was calibrated on one of the original population data sets with 50 - 50 male and female participants. This model overpredicted the risks for women and underpredicted the risks for men. A solution to this problem was found based on published values of sex hormones for men and women. Based on the expanded current model, two major factors contribute to the gender differences in predictions: gender factor values (10.5 ml·kg-1·min-1 for men and 3.5 ml·kg-1·min-1 for women) used in VO2max equations and a sex hormone factor that changes as hormones change for men and women with age. Smoking differences associated with gender and the risk associated with smoking was added to the model. Cognitive reserve based on education differences between men and women was also added. These are minor components compared to hormone effects. The expanded model includes an input for unsaturated fat diets and cholesterol reducing medications and use of Viagra by men that is known to reduce risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Predictions from the expanded model closely matched measured values from age 50 through age 95 for each gender with R2 values of 0.99, which were highly significant (p = 0.001). mathematical model for Stroke and White matter Hyperintensities

A mathematical model was developed to predict the risk of having a stroke as a person ages. The age component was derived from the concept that the change in risk of stroke with age is a function of the current risk of developing a stroke. This equation modeled the trend with age reported in the literature for two different data sets with R2 values of 0.97 or better for both men and women. A second equation of a similar nature was developed to predict the accumulation of white matter hyperintensities, WmH, as a person ages. It appears that each equation includes a set of common risk factors. This set of common risk factors allows an individual’s risk for stroke to be based on measured WmH. A third equation links WmH with the risk of developing a stroke. This equation allows an individual to use measured WmH from brain scans to predict the future risk of developing a stroke. In theory, a person with a relatively high measurement of WmH can project future risk for stroke with age and use counter measures such as exercise and medications to keep other risk factors low as a person continues to age.

BACKGROUND Presence of liver metastatic disease in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC),either synchronous or metachronous after pancreatic resection,is a terminal diagnosis that warrants management with palliative intent as per all international practice ***,there is an increasing interest on any potential value of surgical treatment of isolated oligometastatic disease in selected *** To present the published evidence on surgical management of PDAC liver metastases,synchronous and metachronous,and compare the outcomes of these treatments to the current standard of *** A systematic review was performed in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and meta-Analyses guidelines to compare the outcomes of both synchronous and metachronous liver metastases resection to standard *** 356 studies were identified,31 studies underwent full-text review and of these 10 were suitable for *** synchronous resection of liver metastases was compared to standard care,most studies did not demonstrate a survival benefit with the exception of one study that utilised neoadjuvant ***,resection of metachronous disease appeared to confer a survival advantage when compared to treatment with chemotherapy *** A survival benefit may exist in resection of selected cases of metachronous liver oligometastatic PDAC disease,after disease biology has been tested with time and systemic *** survival benefit is less clear in synchronous cases;however an approach with neoadjuvant treatment and consideration of resection in some selected cases may confer some *** studies should focus on pathways for selection of cases that may benefit from an aggressive approach.

This paper presents a survey of image processing techniques proposed in the literature forextracting key cereal crop growth metrics from high spatial resolution, typically proximalimages. The descriptive crop growth metrics considered are: crop canopy cover, aboveground biomass, leaf area index (including green area index), chlorophyll content, andgrowth stage. The paper includes an overview of relevant fundamental image processingtechniques including camera types, colour spaces, colour indexes, and image segmentation. The descriptive crop growth metrics are defined. Reference methods for groundtruth measurement are described. Image processing methods for metric estimation aredescribed in detail. The performance of the methods is reviewed and compared. The surveyreveals limitations in image processing techniques for cereal crop monitoring such as lackof robustness to lighting conditions, camera position, and self-obstruction. Directions forfuture research to improve performance are identified.

Estimates of voluntary activation in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction:Effects of type of stimulator,number of stimuli,and quantification technique

Background:Accurate quantification of voluntary activation is important for understanding the extent of quadriceps dysfunction in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction(ACLR).Voluntary activation has been quantified using both percent activation derived from the interpolated twitch technique and central activation ratio(CAR)derived from the burst superimposition technique,as well as by using different types of electrical stimulators and pulse train ***,it is unclear how these parameters affect voluntary activation estimates in individuals with *** study was performed to fill this important knowledge gap in the anterior cruciate ligament ***:Quadriceps strength and voluntary activation were examined in 18 ACLR participants(12 quadriceps/patellartendon graft,6 hamstring tendon graft;time since ACLR:1.06±0.82 years,mean±SD)at 90°of knee flexion using 2 stimulators(Digitimer and Grass)and pulse train conditions(3-pulse and 10-pulse).Voluntary activation was quantified by calculating both CAR and percent ***:Results indicated that voluntary activation was significantly overestimated by CAR when compared with percent activation(pmates were not affected by pulse train conditions when using percent activation;however,3-pulse stimuli resulted in greater overestimation than 10-pulse stimuli when using CAR(p=0.003).Voluntary activation did not differ between stimulators(p>0.05);however,the Digitimer evoked greater torque at rest than the Grass(pm the interpolated twitch technique provides superior estimates of voluntary activation than CAR derived from burst superimposition and is less affected by pulse train conditions or stimulators in individuals with ACLR.

Variation in resource competition traits among microcystis strains is affected by their microbiomes

Freshwater harmful algal blooms are often dominated by microcystis,a phylogenetically cohesive group of cyanobacteria marked by extensive genetic and physiological *** have previously shown that this genetic diversity and the presence of a microbiome of heterotrophic bacteria influences competitive interactions with eukaryotic *** this study,we sought to explain these observations by characterizing monod equation parameters for resource usage(maximum growth rateμmax,half-saturation value for growth Ks,and quota)as a function of N and P levels for four strains(NIES-843,PCC 9701,PCC 7806[WT],and PCC 7806ΔmcyB)in presence and absence of a microbiome derived from microcystis isolated from Lake *** indicated limited differences in maximum growth rates but more pronounced differences in half-saturation values among microcystis *** largest impact of the microbiome was reducing the minimal nitrogen concentration sustaining growth and reducing half saturation values,with variable results depending on the microcystis *** strains also differed from each other in their N and P quotas and the extent to which microbiome presence affected *** data highlight the importance of the microbiome in altering microcystis-intrinsic traits,strain competitive hierarchies,and thus bloom *** quota,μmax,and Ks are commonly used in models for harmful algal blooms,our data suggest that model improvement may be possible by incorporating genotype dependencies of resource-use parameters.

Background:Bacillary layer detachment(BALAD)is a phenomenon characterized by fluid accumulation at the myoid region of the inner photoreceptor segments identifiable on optical coherence tomography(OCT)*** finding has been recently described in patients with diverse primary diagnoses which share the common feature of serous exudation in the posterior ***,thus far there have been very few reports in the literature of BALAD in patients with posterior *** Description:A 16-year-old male presented with unilateral vision changes that acutely worsened overnight to significant unilateral vision *** was eventually diagnosed with idiopathic posterior scleritis with associated BALAD on *** to other reported cases of BALAD,he experienced anatomic restoration of the outer retina followed by good visual recovery after treatment with high dose steroid,ultimately with complete recovery of both retinal anatomy and vision within 4 ***:This case provides further evidence that posterior scleritis can be a cause of *** rapid presentation and excellent visual and anatomical outcome of this case is entirely consistent with known descriptions of BALAD in a variety of other conditions,further supporting the categorization of BALAD as an entity which retinal specialists should be able to recognize as distinct from other forms of intraretinal fluid,retinal detachment,and retinoschisis.

Sodium and water perturbations,manifesting as hyponatraemia and hypernatraemia,are common in patients who had an acute stroke,and are associated with worse outcomes and increased *** non-stroke related causes of sodium and water perturbations in these patients include underlying comorbidities and concomitant ***,hospitalised patients who had an acute stroke may receive excessive intravenous hypotonic solutions,have poor fluid intake due to impaired neurocognition and consciousness,may develop sepsis or are administered drugs(eg,mannitol);factors that can further alter serum sodium *** and water perturbations can also be exacerbated by the development of endocrine consequences after an acute stroke,including secondary adrenal insufficiency,syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and diabetes ***,COVID-19 infection has been reported to increase the risk of development of sodium and water perturbations that may further worsen the outcomes of patients who had an acute *** there are currently no accepted consensus guidelines on the management of sodium and water perturbations in patients who had an acute stroke,we conducted a systematic review of the literature published in English and in peer-reviewed journals between January 2000 and December 2020,according to PRISmA guidelines,to assess on the current knowledge and clinical practices of this *** this review,we discuss the signs and symptoms of hyponatraemia and hypernatraemia,the pathogenesis of hyponatraemia and hypernatraemia,their clinical relevance,and we provide our recommendations for effective treatment strategies for the neurologist in the management of sodium and water perturbations in commonly encountered aetiologies of patients who had an acute stroke.

Diabetes exacerbates inflammatory bowel disease in mice with dietinduced obesity

BACKGROUND The increased prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)among patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests a causal link between these diseases,potentially involving the effect of hyperglycemia to disrupt intestinal barrier *** To investigate whether the deleterious impact of diabetes on the intestinal barrier is associated with increased IBD severity in a murine model of colitis in mice with and without diet-induced *** mice were fed chow or a high-fat diet and subsequently received streptozotocin to induce diabetic-range *** weeks later,dextran sodium sulfate was given to induce *** select experiments,a subset of diabetic mice was treated with the antidiabetic drug dapagliflozin prior to colitis *** included both clinical and histological measures of colitis activity as well as histochemical markers of colonic epithelial barrier *** In mice given a high-fat diet,but not chow-fed animals,diabetes was associated with significantly increased clinical colitis activity and histopathologic markers of disease *** was also associated with a decrease in key components that regulate colonic epithelial barrier integrity(colonic mucin layer content and epithelial tight junction proteins)in diet-induced obese *** of these effects of diabetes in diet-induced obese mice was ameliorated by restoring *** In obese mice,diabetes worsened clinical and pathologic outcomes of colitis via mechanisms that are reversible with treatment of ***-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction offers a plausible mechanism linking diabetes to increased colitis *** findings suggest that effective diabetes management may decrease the clinical severity of IBD.
