Background:Orbital fractures are common injuries found in facial *** etiologies of orbital fractures include motor vehicle collisions and *** report the case of a 32-year-old male who suffered an orbital fracture from a water ***,we describe the aeromedical complications that may result from this ***,we attempt to answer the question of when a patient may return to flying after sustaining such an injury through review of the *** presentation:A 32-year-old male pilot with the United States Air Force was at an outdoor event with his unit when he was struck with a water balloon launched from a sling shot into his left *** afterwards,he had an onset of subcutaneous emphysema and was escorted to a nearby Emergency *** tomography identified an orbital fracture with associated orbital and subcutaneous *** patient was evaluated by a plastic surgeon and was determined not to be a surgical *** weeks later,he returned to flying ***:Water balloons are thought to be safe and harmless ***,when coupled with sling shots,water balloons can become formidable projectiles capable of significant orbital injury including orbital *** injuries are concerning to aviators,as the most common sites for fractures of the orbit are the thin ethmoid and maxillary bones adjacent to the *** altitude,gases in the sinuses may expand and enter the orbit through these fractures,which may suddenly incapacitate the *** is important for flight surgeons to identify and assess these individuals to determine suitability for flying.

Introducing RiverProfileApp,a web application for near-global,exploratory,longitudinal river profile analysis

River profile analysis has been used extensively in the earth sciences. Commonly,exploration of river profiles requires downloading and processing Digital Elevation models (DEms) for specific areas,which limits the scope of exploratory analysis. Presented here is a web application designed to analyze river profiles at 90m resolution at a near-global scale. The app allows users to quickly query downstream or upstream from selected points anywhere within ±60 degrees latitude,in order to interactively analyze corresponding river profiles. River profile analysis can be performed in both distance and χ space,where χ is a metric that is proportional to the presumed steady-state shape of the river profile. River locations are based on the HydroSHEDS 90m drainage direction grid,as well as custom computed D8 drainage direction and void-filled SRTm DEms. RiverProfileApp is open source,and although currently it is designed as an exploratory tool,more functions can be easily added via community contributions and/or from existing toolsets. Landsat 8 and Alos DEm geological mapping reveals the architecture of the giant mesoproterozoic Kunene Complex anorthosite suite(Angola/Namibia)

Optimising mesh size with escape gaps in a dual-species portunid-trap fishery

In south-eastern Australia,the same baited,round traps(comprising 50–57-mm mesh netting)are used to target giant mud,Scylla serrata and blue swimmer crabs,Portunus armatus in spatially separated *** fisheries are characterised by the common,problematic discarding of undersized portunids(mm carapace length;CL for *** and ***)and fish(yellowfin bream,Acanthopagrus australis).This poor selectivity was addressed here in two experiments assessing the utility of(1)traps partially or completely covered in larger mesh(91 mm to match the minimum legal size of the smaller ***),and then(2)any cumulative benefits of fitting species-specific escape *** experiment 1,there were no differences among catches of legal-sized portunids associated with either partial,or complete trap coverage with larger *** of mesh coverage,both designs of 91-mm traps also retained significantly fewer(by up to 42%)undersized *** and *** experiment 2,replicate traps completely covered in 91-mm mesh were tested against conventional traps comprising 56-mm mesh,and traps with the same mesh sizes,but also three escape gaps configured for either ***(46×120 mm)or ***(36×120 mm)(*** treatments in total).All modified traps maintained catches of legal-sized ***,and only the 91-mm traps with escape gaps caught fewer legal-sized *** undersized ***,*** and ***(mean catches reduced by up to 49%)were retained in all larger-meshed than small-meshed traps,and in all of those traps with escape gaps(by up to 95%)than *** there were no significant cumulative benefits of escape gaps in largermeshed traps(measured by a statistical interaction),there was a trend of fewer unwanted catches *** data support configuring portunid traps with mesh sizes matching the morphology of the smallest legal-sized target ***,simply retroactively fitting escape gaps in existing,smaller-m

Repeatability and Variability of the 3-min All-Out Test at the Subject Level

Purpose The constant work-rate to exhaustion tests must be repeated several times at each work-rate to estimate subject-level trial-to-trial variance(intra-individual variability,IIV)of critical power(CP)and work capacity(W').Alternatively,these parameters and their variance can be estimated by repeating the 3-min all-out test(3mT)fewer *** purpose of this study was to propose a method to determine subject-level repeatability of the 3mT and demonstrate the need to repeat the test multiple times to estimate *** Seven cyclists performed a ramp test and four 3mTs on a *** parameters CP,W',peak power(Pp),and total work(TW)were compared across trials using repeated measures ANOVA,Bland-Altman analysis,Intraclass Cor-relation Coefficients(ICC),Typical Error(TE)of measurement,and Coefficient of Variation(CV).Results For the group,average CP and W'were 284±58 W and 10.214±3.143 *** reliability statistics,CP(ICC=0.97,TE=8 W,CV=2.94%)and W'(ICC=0.88,TE=1.11 kJ,CV=10.87%),indicated strong ***-level repeatability was determined by comparing time-to-peak power(TPp),absolute difference in Pp(δPp),and TW(δTW)for pairs of *** average IIVs estimated by the 95%confidence intervals were±15 W for CP and±1.68 kJ for W'.Conclusions Thresholds are proposed for TPp(7 s),δPp(10%),andδTW(3%)to determine subject-level repeatability of the 3mT before computing the IIV of CP and W'.It is suggested that the 3mT is repeated at least three times to estimate the IIV,which aids in personalized measurement of training improvements and performance optimization。
