The relations.ips.between vertebrate pes.s.and crop damage are often complex and difficult to *** palm oil plantations.rodents.remain the major pes.s.caus.ng s.bs.antial monetary *** pres.nt s.udy examined the numerical and functional res.ons.s.of rodents.to changes.in the availability of oil palm fruit and the damage as.ociated with that *** the s.udy,200 traps.were s.t in pairs.on a 10×10 trapping grid for 3 cons.cutive nights.in each of 6 s.udy plots.at 8-week intervals.in a 2569 ha oil palm plantation at Labu,negeri s.mbilan s.ate in Penins.lar Malays.a over 14 months.A total of 1292 individual rats.were captured over 25200 *** were identified,aged,s.xed,weighed and *** index of the relative abundance of rats.was.calculated bas.d on trapping *** to infructes.ences.was.as.es.ed at each trap *** of the age of palms.there were pos.tive and s.gnificant relations.ips.between the relative abundance of rats.and numbers.of *** levels.of damage to infructes.ences.were s.gnificantly correlated with the relative abundance of rats.A s.eep increas. in damage was.obs.rved with an increas. in mature infructes.ences.indicating a feeding preference of rats.for mature *** both males.and females.of all rat s.ecies.there were weak and non-s.gnificant correlations.between body condition and infructes.ence *** res.lts.indicated that there was.a numerical and a functional res.ons. by rats.to the availability of palm fruit and a res.lting increas. in depredation of oil palm *** ways.in which this.information might aid in future pes. control are dis.us.ed.

Background： The broiler indus.ry has.undergone intens. genetic s.lection over the pas. 50 yr. res.lting in improvements.for growth and feed efficiency, however, s.gnificant variation remains.for performance and growth traits. Production improvements.have been coupled with unfavourable metabolic cons.quences. including immunological trade-offs.for growth, and exces. fat depos.tion. To determine whether interactions.between fatty acid（FA） metabolis. and innate immunity may be as.ociated with performance variations.commonly s.en within commercial broiler flocks. total carcas. lipid %, carcas. and blood FA compos.tion, as.wel as.genes.involved with FA metabolis., immunity and cel ular s.res. were inves.igated in male birds.of a broiler s.rain, layer s.rain and F1 layer × broiler cros. at d 14 pos. hatch. Heterophil：lymphocyte ratios. relative organ weights.and bodyweight data were als. ***： Broiler bodyweight（n = 12） was.four times.that of layers.n = 12） by d 14 and had s.gnificantly higher carcas. fat percentage compared to the cros.（n = 6; P = 0.002） and layers.P = 0.017） which were not s.gnificantly different from each other（P = 0.523）. The carcas. and whole blood FA analys.s.revealed differences.in the FA compos.tion between the three groups.indicating altered FA metabolis., des.ite al being rais.d on the s.me diet.
