BACKGROUNdANdOBJECTIVE: To characterize the range of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and.s.andard automated perimetry damage in eyes with large vertical cup-d.s. ratio (VCdR). PATIENTs ANd METHOds: Complete examination, standard automated perimetry, scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the RNFL and optic nerve head were performed. LargeVCdR was defined as ≥0.80 using stereoscopic d.s. examination and OCT optic nerve head analysis. structural and functional characteristics were assessed.s.parately in eyes with a d.s. area of less than 2 mm2, 2 to 2.5 mm2 and greater than 2.5 mm2. REsULTs: Fifty-seven eyes of 57 subjects were enrolled. A broad range in mean deviation (2.0 to-32.8 dB) and mean RNFL thickness with OCT (24.3-100.4 μm) and.s.anning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation (24.0-61.7 μm) was identified. Predictors of standard automated perimetry severity using multiple linear regression were mean RNFL thickness using OCT (P=.001) and.s.anning laser polarimetry (P=.001), OCT-vertical cup diameter (P=.003), temporal, superior, nasal, inferior, temporal standard deviation (P=.03), and OCT-d.s. area (P=.04). Eyes with an OCTd.s. area of less than 2 mm2 demonstrated.s.gnificantly greater standard automated perimetry damage, RNFL loss using OCT and.s.anning laser polarimetry, and OCT-rim area (P=.002, .0007, .03, and spectively) compared with eyes with a d.s. area of greater than 2.5 mm2. CONCLUsIONs: Eyes with large VCdR have a wide range of RNFL atrophy and.s.andard automated perimetry damage. small optic d.s.s are associated with more advanced glaucomatous injury.

This paper presents a new computational method for forward uncertainty quantification(UQ)analyses on large-scale structural systems in the presence of arbitrary and dependent random *** method consists of a generalized polynomial chaos expansion(GPCE)for statistical moment and reliability analyses associated with the stochastic output and a static reanalysis method to generate the input-output data *** the reanalysis,we employ substructuring for a structure to isolate its local regions that vary due to random *** allows for avoiding repeated computations of invariant substructures while generating the input-output data *** substructuring with static condensation further improves the computational efficiency of the reanalysis without losing ***,the GPCE with the static reanalysis method can achieve significant computational saving,thus mitigating the curse of dimensionality to some degree for UQ under high-dimensional *** numerical results obtained from a simple structure indicate that the proposed method for UQ produces accurate solutions more efficiently than the GPCE using full finite element analyses(FEAs).We also demonstrate the efficiency and.s.alability of the proposed method by executing UQ for a large-scale wing-box structure under ten-dimensional(all-dependent)random inputs.

Anomalous ion heat transport is analyzed in the T-10 tokamak plasma heated with electron cyclotron resonance heating(ECRH) in second-harmonic extra-ordinary mode. Predictive modeling with empirical scaling for Ohmical heat conductivity shows that in ECRH plasmas the calculated ion temperature could be overestimated, so an increase of anomalous ion heat transport is required. To study this effect two scans are presented: over the EC resonance position and over the ECRH power. The EC resonance position varies from the high-field.s.de to the low-field.s.de by variation of the toroidal magnetic field. The scan over the heating power is presented with on-axis and mixed ECRH regimes. d.s.harges with high anomalous ion heat transport are obtained in all considered regimes. In these d.s.harges the power balance ion heat conductivity exceeds the neoclassical level by up to 10 times. The high ion heat transport regimes are d.s.inguished by three parameters: the ratio Te/Ti, the normalized electron density gradient R/■, and the ion–ion collisionality νii~*. The combination of high Te/Ti, high νii~*, and R/■=6-10 results in values of normalized anomalous ion heat fluxes up to 10 times higher than in the low transport scenario.

Aim: To examine the repeatability and effect of an enhancement module on the severity of atypical birefringence patterns (ABP) using scanning laser polarimetery (sLP) with variable corneal compensation (VCC). Methods: 16 patients with perimetric glaucoma (PG), 24 glaucoma suspect and pre-perimetric glaucoma (GsPPG), and 12 normal volunteers (N) were included. One randomly selected eye of each volunteer was scanned three times using VCC and enhanced corneal compensation (ECC) at the same session by the same examiner. Typical scan scores (Tss) were calculated to evaluate the ABP. Coefficients of variability (CoV), coefficients of repeatability (CoR), and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Results: The mean Tss using ECC (n=97.3 (5.5), GsPPG=98.3 (3.5), PG =99.2 (2.3))was significantly higher (p=0.02, 0.01, and 0.006, respectively) compared with VCC (80.5 (14.4), 88.2 (18.2), and 83.4 (2.2), respectively). VCC parameters had a CoR of 1.2-6.5, CoV of 1.9%-8.6%, and ICC of 0.8-0.9. ECC parameters had a CoR of 0.5-4.0, CoV of 0.3%-5.1%, and ICC of 0.2-0.9. TsNIT average was the overall best performing parameter with the highest repeatability and least variability using both techniques(CoRsion: The enhancement module significantly reduced the severity of ABP and maintained a high level of repeatability of retardation measurements.

PURPOsE: To define the clinical characteristics of atypical birefringence imag es and to d.s.ribe a quantitative method for their identification. d.s.GN: Prosp ective, comparative, clinical observational ***: Normal and glaucomato us eyes underwent complete examination, standard automated perimetry, scanning l aser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation (Gdx-VCC), and optical cohe rence tomography (OCT) of the macula, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (R NFL), and optic d.s.. Eyes were classified into two groups: normal birefringence pattern (NBP) and atypical birefringence pattern (ABP). Clinical, functional, a nd.s.ructural characteristics were assessed.s.parately. A multiple logistic regr ession model was used to predict eyes with ABP on the basis of a quantitative sc an score generated by a support vector machine (sVM) with ***: sixt y-five eyes of 65 patients were enrolled. ABP images were observed in 5 of 20 ( 25%) normal eyes and 23 of 45 (51%) glaucomatous eyes. Compared with eyes with NBP, glaucomatous eyes with ABP demonstrated.s.gnificantly lower sVM scores (Pd 0.03, respectively) and greater temporal, mean , inferior, and nasal RNFL thickness using Gdx-VCC; and a weaker correlation wi th OCT generated RNFL thickness (R2=.75 vs. 27). ABP images were significantly c orrelated with older age (R2=.16, P=.001). The sVM score was the only significan t (Pdictor of ABP images and provided high d.s.riminating power betw een eyes with NBP and ABP (area under the receiver operator characteristic curve =0.98). CONCLUsIONs: ABP images exist in a subset of normal and glaucomatous eye s, are associated with older patient age, and produce an artifactual increase in RNFL thickness using Gdx-VCC. The sVM score is highly predictive of ABP images .

Objective: The Low- Pressure Glaucoma Treatment study (LoGTs) seeks to evaluate visual field.s.ability in low- pre- ssure glaucoma patients randomized to intraocular pressure reduction in both eyes with topical twice daily brimonidine tartrate 0.2% versus twice daily timolol maleate 0.5% . This article d.s.ribes the LoGTs d.s.gn and presents baseline characteristics of the subjects. d.s.gn: Randomized, multicenter, double- masked clinical trial. Participants: Low- pressure glaucoma patients 30 years of age or older were identified. Exclusion criteria included an untreated pressure of more than 21 mmHg, advanced visual field loss, and contraindications to study medications. Interventions: Randomization of both eyes to double- masked monotherapy with brimonidine or timolol. Follow- up visits included Humphrey 24- 2 full- threshold perimetry, tonometry every 4 months, and annual optic d.s. photography. Main Outcome Measure: Progression of visual field loss. Results: One hundred ninety patients were randomized between 1998 and 2000. Mean age (± standard deviation) was 64.9± 10.7 years. Women comprised 59.5% of the patients. Fifty- three patients (27.9% ) had unilateral field loss. The 137 patients with bilateral field loss were older than those with unilateral field loss: 65.7 versus 62.3 years of age (Pd diurnal intraocular pressures were similar between the eyes of the bilateral patients (mean, 15.5 mmHg in both eyes) and unilateral patients (mean, 16.0 mmHg in field loss vs. 15.6 mmHg in fellow eyes). Visual field mean deviation for all eyes was- 5.4± 4.7 decibels. Central corneal thickness in 168 phakic patients was 543± 35 μ m (range,435- 655 μ m); thickness was less than 500 μ m in 15 eyes and was more than 600 μ m in 11 eyes. Mean vertical cup- to- d.s. ratio for all eyes was 0.67± 0.15. Unilateral field loss patients had a larger cupto- d.s. ratio in the field loss eye (0.75± 0.12) than the fello weye with a normal field (0.60± 0.17, P< 0.0

While we eagerly anticipate sMILE’s(solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer)unprecedented X-ray observations of the Earth’s magnetosheath and the initiation of a new era of magnetospheric research,it seems appropriate to look ahead to the abilities of the next generation of astrophysics *** these,the Line Emission Mapper(LEM),a large aperture micro-calorimeter based mission,is currently planned to be able to observe the magnetosheath at high spectral resolution(~2 eV).With a field of view of~30′,LEM will allow higher spatial resolution and higher cadence measurement of the motion of a very small portion of the magnetopause over relatively short periods of time(multiple hours),complementing sMILE’s global ***’s strength is its spectral *** will be able to measure the abundance of a broad range of elements and ionization states,many of which are inaccessible to current in situ instruments,and will be able to separate the emission from the magnetosheath from the emission from the cosmic X-ray background using the difference in their relative velocities.

Neuropathic pain is a severe and chronic condition widely found in the general *** reason for this is the extensive variety of damage or d.s.ases that can spark this unpleasant constant feeling in *** the processing of pain,the dorsal root ganglia constitute an important region where dorsal root ganglion neurons play a crucial role in the transmission and propagation of sensory electrical ***,the dorsal root ganglia have recently exhibited a regenerative capacity that should not be neglected in the understanding of the development and resolution of neuropathic pain and in the elucidation of innovative ***,we will review the complex interplay between cells(satellite glial cells and inflammatory cells)and factors(cytokines,neurotrophic factors and genetic factors)that takes place within the dorsal root ganglia and accounts for the generation of the aberrant excitation of primary sensory neurons occurring in neuropathic *** importantly,we will summarize an updated view of the current pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies targeting the dorsal root ganglia for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
