From Gini＇s Approach to Present-day Demography：＂Tempo Effects＂ on Demographic Insights （？）

Since the first decade of the twentieth century, Italian demography, in jointly dealing with both quantitative aspects - with the benefit of an excellent training in statistics and mathematics - and the qualitative aspects of demographic development, has sought a synthesis in this mutual tie. Corrado Gini may have been the first to fully understand the need to combine the analysis of demographic phenomena with the study of social, economic and biological factors. This new approach was called ＂Demografia Integrale＂（Integral Demography）, which much of Gini＇s own work is an example of, as is that of almost all the demographers of that period, as well as those who were, directly or indirectly, his ＂pupils＂. What is left of that approach among the ＂grandchildren＂ and ＂great-grandchildren＂, those who arrived from the 1960s onwards？ Amid all the continuities and discontinuities, has demography in the second half of the twentieth century and after kept alive Gini＇s teaching, whether in its content or in its approaches？ In what follows we shall try to answer the questions raised, following the main lines of the long development of demographic research from Gini to the present. In the first part of this essay we shall try to outline the main points of Gini＇s demographic work in sequence, considering what is the main object of his enquiry, the research that proved so important both nationally and internationally. In the second part we shall give a broad account of Italian demography in the years following the second world war down to our own day, trying to point out the continuities and discontinuities with the past, both in relation to topics and analytic approaches, and to methodological developments. The last part will deal with a conclusion to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Gini＇s death.

Taking the full advantage of the conformal growth characterizing atomic layer deposition(ALD),the possibility to grow Co thin films,with thickness from several tens down to few nanometers on top of a granular topological insulator(TI)Sb2Tes film,exhibiting a quite high surface roughness(2-5 nm),was *** study the Co growth on the Sb2Tes substrate,we performed simultaneous Co depositions also on sputtered Pt substrates for *** conducted a thorough chemical-structural characterization of the Co/Sb2Tes and Co/Pt heterostructures,confirming for both cases,not only an excellent conformality,but also the structural continuity of the Co layers.X-ray diffraction(XRD)and high-resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM)analyses evidenced that Co on Sb2Te3 grows preferentially oriented along the[0oe]direction,following the underlying rhombohedric ***,Co crystallizes in a cubic phase oriented along the[111]direction when deposited on *** work shows that,in case of deposition of crystalline materials,the ALD surface selectivity and conformality can be extended to the definition of local epitaxy,where in-plane ordering of the crystal structure and mosaicity of the developed crystallized grains are dictated by the underlying ***,a highly sharp and chemically-pure Co/Sb2Tes interface was evidenced,which is promising for the application of this growth process for spintronics.

Objective:To evaluate in vitro effects of Tagetes minuta L. essential oil(TEO) on L3 Anisakis larvae type 1. Methods:In order to evaluate the potential use of Tagetes minuta essential oil against L3 Anisakis larvae three different media were tested:1) a saline solution(SS); 2) an industrial marinating solution; 3) sunflower seeds oil(SO). For each media and concentrations of TEO(0.1%,0.5%,1.0% and 5.0% v/v),20 parasites were introduced into plastic Petri dishes(diameter 90 mm) and maintained at room temperature. As controls,larvae were maintained without TEO under identical experimental conditions in SS,MS and SO. A total of 900 larvae were tested. The normalized mean viability,LT100,LT50 and the percentage of inactivation at 24 hours were calculated. Results:In vitro tests revealed a complete inactivation of parasites in saline solution after 2 hours with 5% and 1% of TEO. In marinating solution,a complete inactivation of parasites was observed after 4 hours at all concentrations used. A slower activity for all TEO concentration was reported in SO. Conclusions:The results obtained,showing a strong activity against Anisakis larvae,confirm TEO as a larvicidal agent in the treatment of human anisakidosis and in the industrial marinating process.

Balantidium coli is a zoonotic protozoan parasite, and pork is considered the major source of Balantidium infection in humans. Transmission is direct and commonly occurs through the ingestion of water and food, especially vegetables, contaminated with infectious cysts. Ingestion of meat contaminated, with faecal material during the evisceration process, can represent a potential risk of B. coli transmission. In order to determine the rate of B. coli infection in pigs regularly slaughtered at abattoirs in the province of Messina (Sicily, Italy), faecal samples of 242 pigs (122 commercial hybrid and 120 Nero Siciliano pigs) were collected and evaluated by standard methods for the presence of trophozoites and/or cysts. A total of 105 of the commercial hybrid (86.06%), but only 44 of the Nero Siciliano (36.66%) pigs, were identified as positive for B. coli infection. The results obtained, may be linked to the type of farming employed.

Modelling Bacterial Dynamics in Food Products: Role of Environmental Noise and Interspecific Competition

In this paper we review some results obtained within the context of the predictive microbiology, which is a specific field of the population dynamics. In particular we discuss three models, which exploit tools of statistical mechanics, for bacterial dynamics in food of animal origin. In the first model, the random fluctuating behaviour, experimentally measured, of the temperature is considered. In the second model stochastic differential equations are introduced to take into account the influence of physical and chemical variables, such as temperature, pH and activity water, subject to deterministic and random variations. The third model, which is an extended version of the second one, neglects the environmental fluctuations, and concentrates on the role of the interspecific bacterial interactions. The comparison between expected results and observed data indicates that the presence of noise sources and interspecific bacterial interactions improves the predictive features of the models analyzed.

AIM: To report a case of severe idiopathic gastroparesis in complete absence of Kit-positive gastric interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). METHODS: Gastric tissue from a patient with severe idiopathic gastroparesis unresponsive to medical treatment and requiring surgery was analyzed by conventional histology and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Gastric pacemaker cells expressing Kit receptor had completely disappeared while the local level of stem cell factor, the essential ligand for its development and maintenance, was increased. No signs of cell death were observed in the pacemaker region. CONCLUSION: These results are consistent with the hypothesis that a lack of Kit expression may lead to impaired functioning of ICC. Total gastrectomy proves to be curative.

Effects of cigarette smoking on the evolution of hearing loss caused by industrial noise

The few studies evaluating the changes caused by cigarette smoking on hearing loss induced by occupational exposure to noise have reached discordant conclusions. The aim of this study is to investigate the interactions between cigarette smoking and occupational exposure to noise as risk factors in the onset and development of hearing loss. The study was performed on a sample of 557 shipyard workers exposed to noise at an Equivalent Level (Leq) of 93 dBA. On the basis of their smoking habits, they were divided into three groups: group (A), non-smokers;group (B), smokers (15-30 cigarettes per day);and group (C), heavy smokers (over 30 cigarettes per day). The study focussed on the audiometric responses of the subjects at the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Hz. The results were then compared using statistical techniquees (Internal correlation coefficient, exponential model, ANCOVA, NPC test). Comparison of the audiometric responses showed statistically significant differences between the three groups. Non-parametric analysis, performed using the NPC test, highlighted that the interaction between smoking and exposure to noise has an influence on hearing loss at all frequencies, and particularly at high frequencies (3000-4000 Hz). The data obtained from the examined sample show that smoking and exposure to noise cause an increase in occupational hearing loss and that this is directly related to the number of cigarettes smoked.

AIM： The utility of serum alpha-fetoprotein （α-FP） in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） is questionable. Very high circulating levels of nociceptin/ orphanin FQ （N/OFQ）, a ligand for a novel opioid receptor, have recently been reported in HCC. The aim of this study was to assess the role of plasma N/OFQ in the diagnosis of HCC arising in patients with liver cirrhosis. METHODS： Plasma N/OFQ levels were measured by ELISA in 58 patients （28 HCC and 30 liver cirrhosis） and in 25 healthy controls. The values were correlated with clinical and laboratory features including α-FP. Spearman index, biserial correlation coefficient, non parametric combination （NPC） test and discriminant stepwise analysis were used for statistical evaluation of data.RESULTS： The upper normal limit of nociceptin was 122 pg/mL. Plasma levels above this cut-off were found in 21.4% of patients with HCC, in 23.3% of those with cirrhosis and in 8% of healthy subjects. α-FP serum levels〉200 ng/mL were found in 46.4% of the patients with HCC and in none of those with cirrhosis. No correlation was found between N/OFQ levels and any of the clinical and laboratory features, including α-FP. By NPC test, HCC and cirrhotic patients were different with regard to α-FP （P = 0.000） but not in terms of nociceptin （P = 0.595）. By point biserial correlation, HCC presence was positively correlated with α-FP （rpb = 0.52, P = 0.000） but not with N/OFQ （rpb = 0.16, P = 0.157）. In a discriminant analysis, α-FP was significant in the Wilks test （Y = -0.709 ＋ 0.03 α-FP） and properly classified 81% of all patients and 61% of HCC. N/OFQ had lower sensitivity, specificity and predictive values than α-FP. CONCLUSION： Nociceptin is increased in patients with chronic liver disease, independently of the presence of HCC, although the underlying mechanism has yet to be clarified. We conclude it is not a useful marker for HCC.
