Abundant Production of Reactive Water Radical Cations under Ambient Conditions

Water radical cations,the crucial intermediates in many aqueous reactions and biochemical processes,are difficult to investigate experimentally due to their short lifetime ***,ahomemade device based on energy-tunable discharge was employed to deposit suitable amounts of energy to atmospheric pressure pure water vapor for abundant production of water radical cations,stabilized as(H_(2)O)n^(+·)(n=2-5)with a maximal abundance of≥8.3×10^(6) cps for(H_(2)O)_(2)^(+·),characterized by mass spectrometry(MS).The abundance of water radical cations was optimized by adjusting the experimental parameters such as the discharge voltage(2.5 kV),temperature of the MS inlet(140℃),carrier gas flow(20mL/min),and the distance between the discharge tip and MS inlet(12 mm).The ambient formation of water radical cationswas further confirmedby thehigh reactivity of as-prepared water radical cations,which reacted with benzene,ethyl acetate,and dimethyl disulfide instantly,showing rich chemistry with ionic and radical ***,the computations usingCCSD(T)//MP2 method and density functional theory confirmed that the O-O single-electron bound dimer(b),as well as the hydronium hydroxyl radical complex(A),accounted for the unusual chemistry of the water radical cations,providing a facile approach to access the high reactivity ofwater radical cations under the ambient conditions.

The brazilian transmission system is facing challenging problems with the distance between its generation areas and consumer centers that will be partly solved by the use of HVDC point-to-point *** the near future,the southeast subsystem will have a large amount of power injected through HVDC Systems in multiple points with relatively close electrical ***,the effects of a multi-infeed system are expected to influence the performance and operation of the *** studies and simulations will play an important role in determining the extension of the interactions among HVDC converters and determine if such interactions cause multiple commutation failures,thus disturbing the dynamic stability of the *** use of CCC(Capacitor Commutated Converter)HVDC systems will also be assessed and is expected to diminish the need for a strong AC network(high short circuit level)and,therefore,mitigate multi-infeed *** southeast subsystem of the brazilian Power System currently has four LCC inverters,two of them belong to the Madeira power plant and the other two are from the Itaipu power *** the year 2024,four other HVDC systems will be arriving in the same *** paper discusses the HVDC multi-infeed phenomena regarding the relevance of using synchronous machine models to represent important power plants and the application of mitigation methods regarding the 2020 network model,where six HVDC links will be present.

beginning in the early 1990s, the balsam fir sawfly (Neodiprion abietis) became a significant defoliating insect of precommercially thinned balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands in western Newfoundland, Canada. In 1997, a nucleopolyhedrovirus (NeabNPV) was isolated from the balsam fir sawfly and, as no control measures were then available, NeabNPV was developed for the biological control of balsam fir sawfly. In order to register NeabNPV for operational use under the Canadian Pest Control Products Act, research was carried out in a number of areas including NeabNPV field efficacy, non-target organism toxicology, balsam fir sawfly ecology and impact on balsam fir trees, and NeabNPV genome sequencing and analysis. As part of the field efficacy trials, approximately 22 500 hectares of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest were aerially treated with NeabNPV between 2000 and 2005. NeabNPV was found to be safe, efficacious, and economical for the suppression of balsam fir sawfly outbreak populations. Conditional registration for the NeabNPV-based product, Abietiv?, was received from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (Health Canada) in April 2006. In July 2006, Abietiv was applied by spray airplanes to 15 000 ha of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest in western Newfoundland in an operational control program.

The Cretaceous Turn of Geological Evolution: Key Evidence from East Asia

this work focuses on one of the critical points of Earth＇s history when the Solar System passed through the most distant point of its galactic orbit. During this event, Earth may have suffered from maximum extension, associated with its relative proximity to the Sun at that time, followed by long-term contraction related to its later distancing. This paper is based on generalized data on the Cretaceous evolution of the Earth as a whole and of East Asia in particular. The evidence suggests that major geological processes at this time may be interpreted as transitional changes in the state of Earth. A liquid nature of its core may have reacted to the gravitational and electromagnetic transformations. When the cosmic changes took place at 135-120 Ma, more turbulent flows in the outer core would have favoured the rise of voluminous magmatic plumes and associated fluid flows. These would substantially transform the mantle, crust, hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. In particular, plume-related melting of overlying subducting slabs and lower continental crust could have initiated numerous adakitic melts that formed the East Asian Adakitic Province. These and associated juvenile events produced numerous metallic ore, coal, gas and oil deposits. The Cretaceous is one of the most significant resource-producing periods.

Rufous-and-white wrens Thryophilus rufalbus do not exhibit a dear enemy effects towards conspecific or heterospecific competitors

Many territorial animals exhibit reduced aggression towards neighbours. Known as “the dear enemy effect”, this phenomenon has been documented among conspecific animals across a wide range of animal taxa. In theory, the dear enemy effect can also exist between individuals of different species, particularly when those species compete for shared resources. To date, a heterospecific dear enemy effects has only been documented in ants. In this study, we test for both a conspecific and heterospe-cific dear enemy effect in neotropical rufous-and-white wrensThryophilus rufalbus. This species competes for resources with banded wrensThryophilus pleurostictus, a closely related sympatric congener. We used acoustic playback to simulate ruf-ous-and-white wren and banded wren neighbours and non-neighbours at the edges of rufous-and-white wren territories. Ruf-ous-and-white wrens responded more strongly to signals from their own species, demonstrating that resident males discriminate between conspecific and heterospecific rivals. They did not, however, exhibit a conspecific dear enemy effect. Further, they did not exhibit a heterospecific dear enemy effect. This could be due to neighbours and non-neighbours posing similar levels of threat in this system, to the possibility that playback from the edges of the subjects’ large territories did not simulate a threatening signal, or to other factors. Our study provides the first test of a heterospecific dear enemy effect in vertebrates, and presents a valuable experimental approach for testing for a heterospecific dear enemy effect in other animals.

Absence of high amplitude propagating contractions in subjects with chronic spinal cord injury

AIM: To investigate the presence or absence of high amplitude propagating contractions (HAPC), as well as the other measures of colonic motility, in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: Prolonged colonic ambulatory manometric studies were performed on 14 male volunteers: 8 with SCI (mean age, 59 ± 13 years; mean duration of injury, 13 ± 4 years) and 6 healthy able-bodied controls (mean age, 57 ± 10 years). A solid-state manometry catheter was endoscopically clipped to the splenic flexure. Recording was performed for > 24 h after manometric catheter placement. RESULTS: HAPC were absent in individuals with SCI during pre-sleep, sleep, and post-sleep phases. HAPC were significantly increased after awakening in non-SCI controls (0.8 ± 0.2 HAPC/h vs 10.5 ± 2.0 HAPC/h, P bserved in both the SCI and non-SCI groups (Pre-sleep vs Sleep, non-SCI: 8.8 ± 1.9 vs 2.1 ± 0.9, P bserved in individuals with SCI preor post-sleep. A sleep-induced depression in general colonic motility was evident in SCI and control subjects.

Discontinuous chains of ultramafic rock bodies form part of the 3800–3700 Ma Isua Supracrustal belt(ISb),hosted in the Itsaq Gneiss Complex of southwestern *** bodies are among the world’s oldest outcrops of ultramafic rocks and hence an invaluable geologic *** rocks from Lens b in the northwestern limb of ISb show characteristics of several stages of serpentinization and deserpentinization forming prograde and retrograde mineral ***-rich humite-group minerals such as titanian chondrodite(Ti-Chn)and titanian clinohumite(Ti-Chu)often occur as accessory phases in the metamorphosed ultramafic *** Ti-rich humite minerals are associated with metamorphic *** host olivine is highly forsteritic(Fo96-98)with variable Mn O and Ni O *** concentrations of the rare-earth elements(REE)and high-field strength elements(HFSE)of the metamorphic olivine are higher than typical mantle *** textural and chemical characteristics of the olivine indicate metamorphic origin as a result of deserpentinization of a serpentinized ultramafic protolith rather than primary assemblage reflecting mantle residues from high-degrees of partial *** close association of olivine,antigorite and intergrown Ti-Chn and Ti-Chu suggests pressure condition between$1.3–2.6 GPa within the antigorite stability field(b ultramafic body within the Eoarchean ISb indicate that these are allochthonous ultramafic rocks that recorded serpentine dehydration at relatively lower temperature and reached eclogite facies condition during their complex metamorphic history similar to exhumed UHP ultramafic rocks in modern subduction zone channels.
