The new properties of engineered nanoparti- cles drive the need for new knowledge on the safety, fate, behavior and biologic effects of these particles on organisms and ecosystems. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used extensively for a wide range of applica- tions, e.g, self-cleaning surface coatings, solar cells, water treatment agents, topical sunscreens. Within this scenario increased environmental exposure can be expected but data on the ecotoxicological evaluation ofnanoparticles are still scarce. The main purpose of this work was the evaluation of effects of TiO2 nanoparticles in several organisms, covering different trophic levels, using a battery of aquatic assays. Using fish as a vertebrate model organism tissue histological and ultrastructural observations and the stress enzyme activity were also studied. TiO2 nanoparticles （Aeroxide~ P25）, two phase composition ofanatase （65%） and rutile （35%） with an average particle size value of 27.64-11 nm were used. Results on the ECs0 for the tested aquatic organisms showed toxicity for the bacteria, the algae and the crustacean, being the algae the most sensitive tested organism. The aquatic plant Lemna minor showed no effect on growth. The fish Carassius auratus showed no effect on a 21 day survival test, though at a biochemical level the cytosolic Glutathione-S-Transferase total activity, in intestines, showed a general significant decrease （p〈0.05） after 14 days of exposure for all tested concentrations. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates were observed in the intestine lumen but their internalization by intestine cells could not be confirmed.

BACKGROUND Hepatic infarctions(HI)are ischemic events of the liver in which a disruption in the blood flow to the hepatocytes leads to focal ischemia and *** HI are due to occlusive events in the liver’s blood vessels,but non-occlusive HI may *** are associated with disruption of microvasculature,such as in diabetic *** HI usually presents as peripheral lesions with clear borders,irregular nodular lesions may occur,indistinguishable from liver neoplasms and presenting a diagnostic *** SUMMARY We report a case of multiple extensive HI in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus,who first presented to the emergency room with diabetic *** then developed jaundice,thrombocytopenia,and a marked elevation of serum *** ultrasound of the liver showed the presence of multiple irregular *** investigation with a computerized tomography scan confirmed the presence of multiple hypoattenuating nodules with irregular borders and heterogeneous *** lesions were considered highly suggestive of a primary neoplasm of the *** the patient was clinically stable,his bilirubin levels remained persistently elevated,and he underwent an ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy of the largest *** results revealed extensive ischemic necrosis of hepatocytes,with no signs of associated *** months after the symptoms,the patient showed great improvement in all clinical and laboratory parameters and extensive regression of the lesions on imaging *** This case highlights that diabetic ketoacidosis can cause non-occlusive HI,possibly presenting as nodular lesions indistinguishable from neoplasms.

Toxins isolated from the venom of the spider Phoneutria nigriventer either inhibit or activate a vast number of targets, such as ion channels, with high selectivity and affinity. PhTx3-1 toxin is a selective blocker of IA currents of K^＋ channels, and PhTx3-3 and PhTx3-4 are calcium channel blockers of the P/Q-type calcium channels. The spider neurotoxin PhTx3-6 reversibly and non-specifically inhibits high-voltage-activated Ca^2＋ channels with varying potency （N 〉 R 〉 P/Q 〉 L） in heterologous and native systems. There has been a huge increase in the range of medical disorders involving ionic channels, and blockers of these channels have potential as therapeutic agents. The mechanism of action of each toxin family is different; thus, each needs to be evaluated for its therapeutic potential. This review will focus on peptide toxins purified from the venom of the spider Phoneutria nigriventer that are currently being evaluated in preclinical tests as possible drugs for the treatment of pain, cardiac arrhythmias and ischemia.

Fermentative and Bromatological Characteristics of Piata Palisadegrass Ensiled with Energetic Brans

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the fermentative and bromatological characteristics of Piata palisadegrass that was ensiled with energetic brans and to assess the costs of different additive levels. This experiment was conducted at the Goiano Federal Institute on the Rio Verde campus in Goiás State, Brazil. The experimental design was entirely random with four replications in a 4 × 5 factorial scheme that included four energetic brans (millet, maize, sorghum and wheat) and five levels (0%, 8%, 16%, 24% and 32%). The energetic brans can be considered as a good source of additives for Piata palisadegrass ensiling, which improves the qualitative and nutritional fermentative characteristics of the silage. The maize and wheat brans were the most efficient for improving the fermentative characteristics of the silage. However, millet bran was the most efficient for improving the bromatological characteristics. In addition, the wheat bran had the greatest influence on the final production cost and the sorghum and millet brans were the most economically feasible. Overall, the addition of 24% bran is recommended due to its beneficial impact on silage quality and the average final production cost of the silage.

Changes in aminoacidergic and monoaminergic neurotransmission in the hippocampus and amygdala of rats after ayahuasca ingestion

AIM: To evaluate changes in neurotransmission induced by a psychoactive beverage ayahuasca in the hippocampus and amygdala of naive rats. METHODS: The level of monoamines, their main metabolites and amino acid neurotransmitters concentrations were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Four groups of rats were employed: saline-treated and rats receiving 250, 500 and 800 mg/kg of ayahuasca infusion(gavage). Animals were killed 40 min after drug ingestion and the structures stored at-80 ℃ until HPLC assay. The data from all groups were compared using Analysis of variance and Scheffé as post test and P decreased concentrations of glycine(GLY)(0.13 ± 0.03 vs 0.29 ± 0.07, P < 0.001) and γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA)(1.07 ± 0.14 vs 1.73 ± 0.25, P < 0.001) in the amygdala of rats that received 500 of ayahuasca. Animals that ingested 800 mg/kg of ayahuasca also showed a reduction of GLY level(0.11 ± 0.01 vs 0.29 ± 0.07, P < 0.001) and GABA(0.98 ± 0.06 vs 1.73 ± 0.25, P < 0.001). In the hippocampus, increased GABA levels were found in rats that received all ayahuasca doses: 250 mg/kg(1.29 ± 0.19 vs 0.84 ± 0.21, P < 0.05); 500 mg/kg(2.23 ± 038 vs 084 ± 0.21, P < 0.05) and 800 mg/kg(1.98 ± 0.92 vs 0.84 ± 0.21, P < 0.05). In addition, an increased utilization rate of all monoamines was found in the amygdala after ayahuasca administration in doses: 250 mg/kg(noradrenaline: 0.16 ± 0.02 vs 0.36 ± 0.06, P < 0.01; dopamine: 0.39 ± 0.012 vs 2.39 ± 0.84, P < 0.001; serotonin: 1.02 ± 0.22 vs 4.04 ± 0.91, P < 0.001), 500 mg/kg(noradrenaline: 0.08 ± 0.02 vs 0.36 ± 0.06, P < 0.001; dopamine: 0.33 ± 0.19 vs 2.39 ± 0.84, P < 0.001; serotonin: 0.59 ± 0.08 vs 4.04 ± 0.91, P < 0.001) and 800 mg/kg(noradrenaline: 0.16 ± 0.04 vs 0.36 ± 0.06, P < 0.001; dopamine: 0.84 ± 0.65 vs2.39 ± 0.84, P < 0.05; serotonin: 0.36 ± 0.02 vs 4.04 ± 0.91, P < 0.001). The likely impact of genetically modified soybeans in the Brazilian collective feeding service

Objective: To expose the likely impact of genetically modified foods in Collective Feeding. Methods: This was a case study conducted on a steel company (SC) in Rio de Janeiro State. The likely impact recognition began with the preparation of a soy food products’ list. Then, we verified these products’ frequency on the Food and Nutrition Unit (FNU) menu from the SC, outlining the offer profile. We calculated odds ratios and binomial distribution probability for assessing exposure to soy that may be transgenic. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) regarding soy products was applied. The convergence of daily products’ relative frequency of this population and the population from a reference study about FFQ validation in Rio de Janeiro was verified. Confrontation took place between the classification of foods by the consumers’ likely exposure to soy and the percentage deviation between observed relative frequency of products’ intake offered on the FNU and on the reference study. Results: A list of 51 products were created and 16 of them integrated the menu, e.g. flour, chicken, sausage, maize, instant pudding, bologna, hot dogs and peanuts. Food usually consumed by FNU users and concomitantly consumed in reference study were cookies, flour, spaghetti, bread, cake, instant pudding, sausage and hot dogs. By the classification and percentage deviations results, cookies, breads and pasta were the “villains” of soy’s susceptibility. Coclusion: It was possible to show the likely impact of genetically modified foods in Collective Feeding, confirming that these consumers were exposed to soybeans that may be transgenic.

Background: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and neurodegenerative disorder characterized by deterioration of brain functions. Psychosocial interventions such as music and photographic stimuli may contribute to cognitive and sensory exercise or rehabilitation. Objective: Evaluate musical and photographic stimuli in elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease. Methods: It is an uncontrolled clinical trial, before-after type, eleven subjects composing the sample. Participants were submitted to Katz Index, Autobiographical Memory Test, GDS-15, Mini-Mental State Examination. The collection instruments were used on the first and last day of intervention, individually. There were 2 sessions in the week with duration of 50 minutes totaling 20 sessions. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics and as variables expressed as mean standard deviation. Results: There was a significant effect of cognitive activity (P , it was observed that a small advance (P = 0.05) of the daily life activities. With the analysis of GDS-15, it is verified that they are more effective for the increase of the previous self-estimation of the therapy (P = 0.94). In the application of the AMT, it is observed that there was a better recruitment of the memory for the neutral words. Conclusion: Musical and photographic stimuli had a positive effect on the cognitive level, daily life activities and autobiographical memory in seniors with Alzheimer’s disease.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is an infectious agent that occurs in small ruminants causing caseous lymphadenitis, and more rarely in humans causing lymphadenitis and pneumonia. The breeding small ruminants have great economic importance in Brazil. Rural farm workers and veterinary students who acquired this disease suffered from weakening symptoms for weeks, and the identification of the etiological agent was time-consuming and complex. Due to the low prevalence of case records, there is probably no available commercial diagnostic kit for C. pseudotuberculosis infection in humans. This study aimed to describe human seroreactivity to secreted antigens from C. pseudotuberculosis. Reactivity of serum from farm workers (n = 14), individuals who work with the bacillus at laboratory (n = 8) or individuals without contact (n = 25) was tested with secreted proteins from PAT10 strain of C. pseudotuberculosis by Western blotting. Samples of all (100%) farm workers showed reactivity to 31 kDa, 71 kDa and 164 kDa proteins, while laboratory workers showed 87.5%, 62.5 % and 37.5%, and no-contact 20%, 0% and 16%, respectively. All sera recognized the 275 kDa protein. Our data suggest that C. pseudotuberculosis secreted proteins are antigenic in humans and the recognition profiles allowed the identification of individuals with and without prior contact with this bacillus. This is the first paper which describes human reactivity to C. pseudotuberculosis in serum samples of workers in Brazil.
