Rectification of oxygen transfer through the rat colonic epithelium

AIM To assess whether higher sensitivity of colonic epithelium to hypoxia at the serosal side is associated with oxygen transfer *** Rats were fed either with normal chow or a lowsodium diet. Tissues were mounted as flat sheets in a modified, airtight Ussing chamber with oxygen meters in each hemichamber. Mucosal samples from normal diet animals were studied under control conditions, in low-chloride solution and after adding chloride secretion inhibitors and chloride secretagogues. Samples from sodium-deprived rats were studied before and after ouabain addition. In separate experiments, the correlation between short-circuit current and oxygen consumption was analyzed. Finally, hypoxia was induced in one hemichamber to assess the relationship between its oxygen content and the oxygen pressure differencebetween both hemichambers. ReSULTS In all studied conditions, oxygen consumption was larger in the serosal hemichamber than in the mucosal one(P = 0.0025 to P ent showed significant correlation with both total oxygen consumption(r = 0.765; P = 0.009) in normoxia and oxygen consumption in the serosal hemichamber(r = 0.754; P = 0.011) during mucosal hypoxia, but not with oxygen consumption in the mucosal hemichamber. When hypoxia was induced in the mucosal hemichamber, an oxygen pressure difference of 13 k Pa with the serosal hemichamber was enough to keep its oxygen content constant. However, when hypoxia was induced in the serosal hemichamber, the oxygen pressure difference with the mucosal hemichamber necessary to keep its oxygen content constant was 40 k Pa(P erosal oxygen supply is more readily available to support short-circuit current. This may be partly due to a rectifying behavior of transepithelial oxygen transfer.

Short-term changes in soil properties after prescribed fire and mulching with fern in Mediterranean forests

Prescribed fire,although having low intensity and being able to reduce the risk of wildfire may modify soil properties in the short term,with possible increases in runoffand erosion *** mulching with vegetation residues is one of the most common post-fire management *** of fern,which is abundant on the Mediterranean forest floor,may be used to replace straw for mulching fireaffected ***,the effects of prescribed fires are not completely understood,and there is no data regarding the use of fern to protect soil after fire in the *** fill this gap,selected soil chemical parameters were analyzed,on a comparative basis,in three Mediterranean forests(pine,oak and chestnut)in Calabria(Southern Italy).These parameters were measured immediately and one year after fire in unburned,burned and not treated,and burned and mulched *** in soil chemical properties among the different treatments were significant,and the effects of the prescribed fire and mulching were dependent on the time elapsed from their application and forest *** general,mulching was not effective in limiting the changes in the monitored soil properties compared to the pre-fire *** forest species showed different temporal trends in changes of soil properties.

Short-term clinical outcomes of laparoscopic vs open rectal excision for rectal cancer: A systematic review and metaanalysis

AIM To review evidence on the short-term clinical outcomes of laparoscopic(LRR) vs open rectal resection(ORR) for rectal *** A systematic literature search was performed using Cochrane Central Register, MeDLINe, eMBASe, Scopus, Open Grey and Clinical *** register for randomized clinical trials(RCTs) comparing LRR vs ORR for rectal cancer and reporting short-term clinical outcomes. Articles published in english from January 1, 1995 to June, 30 2016 that met the selection criteria were retrieved and reviewed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA) statements checklist for reporting a systematic review was followed. Random-effect models were used to estimate mean differences and risk ratios. The robustness and heterogeneity of the results were explored by performing sensitivity analyses. The pooledeffect was considered significant when P erall, 14 RCTs were included. No differences were found in postoperative mortality(P = 0.19) and morbidity(P = 0.75) rates. The mean operative time was 36.67 min longer(95%CI: 27.22-46.11, P e mean estimated blood loss was 88.80 ml lower(95%CI:-117.25 to-60.34, P e mean incision length was 11.17 cm smaller(95%CI:-13.88 to-8.47, P ese results were confirmed by sensitivity analyses that focused on the four major RCTs. The mean length of hospital stay was 1.71 d shorter(95%CI:-2.84 to-0.58, P el recovery(i.e., day of the first bowel movement) was 0.68 d shorter(95%CI:-1.00 to-0.36, P e sensitivity analysis did not confirm a significant difference between LRR and ORR for these latter two parameters. The overall quality of the evidence was rated as high. CONCLUSION LRR is associated with lesser blood loss, smaller incision length, and longer operative times compared to ORR. No differences are observed for postoperative morbidity and mortality.

Background: Tropical forests play a fundamental role in the provision of diverse ecosystem services, such as biodiversity,climate and air quality regulation, freshwater provision, carbon cycling, agricultural support and culture. To understand the role of forests in the carbon balance, aboveground biomass(AGB) estimates are needed. Given the importance of Brazilian tropical forests, there is an urgent need to improve AGB estimates to support the Brazilian commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC). Many AGB maps and datasets exist, varying in availability, scale and coverage. Thus, stakeholders, policy makers and scientists must decide which AGB product, dataset or combination of data to use for their particular goals. In this study, we assessed the gaps in the spatial AGB data across the Brazilian Amazon forests not only to orient the decision makers about the data that are currently available but also to provide a guide for future ***: We obtained a map of the gaps in the forest AGB spatial data for the Brazilian Amazon using statistics and differences between AGB maps and a spatial multicriteria evaluation that considered the current AGB datasets. The AGB spatial data gap map represents areas with good coverage of AGB data and, consequently, the main gaps or priority areas where further biomass assessments should focus, including the northeast of Amazon State, Amapá and northeast of Pará. Despite ample literature,the influence of the individual soil properties and covers on the hydrological response of burned soils of forests has not clearly identified.A clear understanding of the surface runoff and erosion rates altered by wildfires and prescribed fires is beneficial to identify the most suitable post-fire treatment This study has carried out a combined analysis of the hydrological response of soil and its driving factors in burned forests of Central-eastern *** pine stands of these forests were subjected to both prescribed fire and wildfire,and,in the latter case,to post-fire treatment with ***,simple multi-regression models are proposed to predict runoff and erosion in the experi-mental *** the case of the prescribed burning,the fire had a limited impact on runoff and erosion compared to the unburned areas,due to the limited changes in soil *** contrast,the wildfire increased many-fold the runoff and erosion rates,but the mulching reduced the hydrological response of the burned soils,particularly for the first two-three rainfalls after the *** increase in runoff and erosion after the wildfire was associated to the removal of the vegetation cover,soil water repellency,and ash left by fire;the changes in water infiltration played a minor role on runoff and *** multi-regression models developed for the prescribed fire were accurate to predict the post-fire runoff ***,these models were less reliable for predictions of the mean erosion *** predictions of erosion after wildfire and mulching were excellent,while those of runoff were not satisfactory(except for the mean values).These results are useful to better understand the relations among the hydrological effects of fire on one side and the main soil properties and covers on the other ***,the proposed prediction models are useful to support the planning activities of forest managers and hydrologists towards a more ef

Chemical and spectroscopic characterization of humic substances from sediment and riparian soil of a highly polluted urban river(Suquía River,Córdoba,Argentina)

The Suquia River,the largest urban river in Cordoba(Argentina),has been severely polluted for *** must be taken to restore its environmental quality by managing riparian zones for increased water-self *** current study aimed to characterize organic matter(OM) dynamics and humic substances(HS) spectrochemical properties along the lower-middle basin of the Suquia *** soil(0-20 cm) and sediment(0-10 cm) samples were collected from a reference location(S1)and four polluted sites(S2-S5) during a low-flow *** contents of soil and sedimentary OM and HS fractions were analyzed by wet oxidation,as well as HS Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectrochemical *** OM and HS fractions from riparian soil were high upstream of Cordoba City(S1 and S2,50.2-50.4 g/kg OM) and within a 50 km downstream location(S5,30.9 g/kg OM) owing to a surplus of fresh plant biomass-carbon(C) *** heterogeneous sediment samples did not show any significant differences among sites(P> 0.05).The lowest values of the ratio of absorbances at 465 and 665 nm(e4/e6)(1.78) and the Δ log K(0.15) coefficient(a measure of HS maturity degree) were obtained downstream of Cordoba City,for both riparian soil and sediment,indicating that HS were enriched by more condensed aromatic structures within highly degraded portions of the *** samples exhibited similar IR spectra,implying overlapping recalcitrant-C structures at the functional group level,but with different absorbance *** from the current study constitute a baseline for understanding the chemical nature of HS from sediment and riparian soil along the Suquia River and can be used as a reference for future studies tracking OM compositional changes over time.

The effects of environmental Stressors on Aggregation in <i>Parachlorella kessleri</i>

The induction of biofilm formation has been explored as a means of harvesting microalgae for bioprocessing applications. environmental stressors have been implicated in the induction of biofilm formation;however, it is unclear whether all stressors, or a select few, are responsible. This study aimed to investigate the effects of three stressors, nitrogen depletion, reduced or elongated day lengths, and increased culture turbulence on bio-film formation of Parachlorella kessleri. We also examined corresponding effects on growth and production of reactive oxygen species. Turbulence induced the greatest response in which a significant decrease in growth plus an increase in superoxide production and flocculation efficiency were seen for the 300-rpm treatment. For varying day lengths, stress response was not observed, however, a significant increase in ePS secretion was measured in both shorter and longer days. Nitrogen depletion induced a low-level stress response, in which superoxide production increased for the highest concentrations, while growth was not impacted. In contrast to previous studies on nitrogen depletion, a significant increase in ePS secretion was not observed. Results indicate that stress response varies according to type and magnitude. ePS production and thus biofilm formation are not linked to the stress indicators investigated. P. kessleri uses small quantities of ePS to contribute to cell stickiness, but not necessarily to the full formation of a biofilm;however, cell stickiness served as a mechanism for substrate adherence and cellular aggregation none the less.

RDG System in Remote Areas with Utility or Local Feed Topology and Operation Strategy

In remote regions with availability of wind energy, a RDG （renewable distributed generation） system is an advantageous alternative to increase the provision of electrical supply. Usually, these systems are structured on the basis of a connection to an existing weak grid. When the grid is out of service, the system may operate in islanding mode, if the RDG configuration allows it, continuing the provision of energy with standard voltage and frequency values. Facing the latter situation, a wind-diesel/gas generation system is proposed, with a conversion and control strategies based on a variable speed wind turbine employing a DFIG （doubly fed induction generator）, a SC （ultracapacitor） storage system and a SG （synchronous generator） driven by a diesel/gas engine.
