We report the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)(PEDOT)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride electrospun fibers and their use as a novel adsorbent material for the removal of the anionic dye Methyl Orange(MO)from aqueous *** novel adsorbent material can be used to selectively remove MO on a wide p H range(3.0-10.0),with a maximum capacity of 143.8 mg/g at p H *** used in a recirculating filtration system,the maximum absorption capacity was reached in a shorter time(20 min)than that observed for batch mode experiments(360 min).Based on the analyses of the kinetics and adsorption isotherm data,one can conclude that the predominant mechanism of interaction between the membrane and the dissolved dye molecules is ***,considering the estimated values for the Gibbs energy,and entropy and enthalpy changes,it was established that the adsorption process is spontaneous and occurs in an endothermic *** good mechanical and environmental stability of these membranes allowed their use in at least 20 consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles,without significant loss of their *** suggest that the physical-chemical characteristics of PEDOT make these hybrid mats a promising adsorbent material for use in water remediation protocols and effluent treatment systems.

Medicinal plants have been presented as a valuable source of preservation of human health. In special, Stryphnodendron barbatiman has been employed due to its antimicrobial activity. This plant is rich in tannins and has been used in popular medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorder, treatment of lesions, and also as anti-inflammatory microbicide. citrobacter freundii is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae and is one of the major causes of opportunistic infections. This microorganism is a bacterium (bacillus) aerobic gram-negative with a length in the range of 1 to 5 mm. c. freundii is commonly found in water, soil, food and occasionally in the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. In this paper, we have demonstrated the antibacterial activity of S. barbatiman by observing cellular death by using inhibition halo approach. Atomic force microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy results suggested that interaction between the main active components of S. barbatiman with cellular wall of c. freundii gives rise to cellular wall damage, and then leads this microorganism to death.

Arthropods on plants in a fragmented Neotropical dry forest： A functional analysis of area loss and edge effects

Loss and fragmentation of natural ecosystems are widely recognized as the most important threats to biodiversity conservation, with Neotropical dry forests among the most endangered ecosystems. Area and edge effects are major factors in fragmented landscapes. Here, we examine area and edge effects and their interaction, on ensembles of arthropods associated to native vegetation in a fragmented chaco Serrano forest. We analyzed family richness and community composition of herbivores, predators, and parasitoids on three native plant species in 12 fragments of varying size and at edge/interior positions. We also looked for indicator families by using Indicator Species Analysis. Loss of family richness with the reduction of forest fragment area was observed for the three functional groups, with sirnilar magnitude. Herbivores were richer at the edges without interaction between edge and area effects, whereas predators were not affected by edge/interior position and parasitoid richness showed an interaction between area and position, with a steeper area slope at the edges. Family composition of herbivore, predator, and parasitoid assemblages was also affected by forest area and/or edge/interior situation. We found three indicator families for large remnants and five for edges. Our results support the key role of forest area for conservation of arthropods taxonomic and functional diversity in a highly threatened region, and emphasize the need to understand the interactions between area and edge effects on such diversity.

Recently, the role of miRNAs in platelets has started to become apparent. In this editorial I highlight this topic in the hope that other scientists may be attracted to work in this area to aid a more complete understanding of protein regulation in platelets and its impact on platelet function.

Nucleation and Growth Mechanisms for Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanodendrites and Their Electrocatalytic Properties

In a seed-mediated synthesis, nanocrystal growth is often described by assuming the absence of homogeneous nucleation in the solution. Here we provide new insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms underlying the formation of bimetallic nanodendrites that are characterized by a dense array of Pt branches anchored to a Pd nanocrystal core. These nanostructures can be easily prepared by a one-step, seeded growth method that involves the reduction of K2Ptcl4 by L-ascorbic acid in the presence of 9-nm truncated octahedral Pd seeds in an aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM analyses revealed that both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of Pt occurred at the very early stages of the synthesis and the Pt branches grew through oriented attachment of small Pt particles that had been formed via homogeneous nucleation. These new findings contradict the generally accepted mechanism for seeded growth that only involves heterogeneous nucleation and simple growth via atomic addition. We have also investigated the electrocatalytic properties of the Pd-Pt nanodendrites for the oxygen reduction and formic acid oxidation reactions by conducting a comparative study with foam-like Pt nanostructures prepared in the absence of Pd seeds under otherwise identical conditions.

Elevated nitric oxide and 3',5' cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis

AIM: To evaluate whether serum levels of nitric oxide (NO ·) and plasma levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and total glutathione (GSH) are altered in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and to examine their correlation with the severity of liver ***: Twenty-six patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis were studied. Serum levels of NO · and plasma levels of cGMP and GSH were measured in 7 patients with compensated alcoholic cirrhosis (child-Pugh A) and 19 patients with advanced cirrhosis (child-Pugh B and c). The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was evaluated. Sixteen healthy volunteers served as controls. Liver enzymes and creatinine levels were also ***: NO · and cGMP levels were higher in patients with child-Pugh B and c cirrhosis than in child-Pugh A cirrhosis or controls (NO ·: 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 11.70 ± 2.74; 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 7.26 ± 2.47 μmol/L, respectively; P cGMP: 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 10.14 ± 2.78; 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 4.95 ± 1.21 pmol/L, respectively; P child-Pugh B and c cirrhosis than in patients with child-Pugh A cirrhosis or controls (16.04 ± 6.06 vs 23.01 ± 4.38 or 16.04 ± 6.06 vs 66.57 ± 26.23 μmol/L, respectively; P cant correlation between NO · and cGMP levels in all patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. A significant negative correlation between reduced glutathione/glutathione disulfide and the MELD score was found in all cirrhotic ***: Our results suggest a role for oxidative stress in alcoholic liver cirrhosis, which is more significant in decompensated patients with higher levels of NO ·and cGMP and lower GSH levels than in compensated and control patients. Altered mediator levels in decompensated patients may influence the hemodynamic changes in and progression of liver disease.
