Inhibitory and Bactericidal Potential of Some Indigenous Functional Food-Plants Used in the O.R. Tambo District Municipality of South Africa

Antimicrobial resistance is a major problem in the management of infectious diseases. African indigenous functional food-plants such as Chenopodium album and Solanum nigrum may constitute important sources of phytochemical constituents for the synthesis of antimicrobial compounds against infectious organisms. The objective of this study was to determine the antimicrobial pro- perties of Chenopodium album and Solanum nigrum-leaves used as functional food-plants in the O.R. Tambo district municipality of South Africa. Organic and aqueous solvent-extracts of C. album and S. nigrum were tested against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC127853), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6051), Escherichia coli (25922) and Enterococcus faecalis (51299) using standard microbiological techniques. Ciprofloxacin was included in all the experimental runs as positive control antibiotic. The aqueous extracts of both plants were the most active with zones of inhibition diameters ranging from 0 mm - 20 mm and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) values ranging from 0.63 mg/mL - 10 mg/mL. The positive control antibiotic was highly active with zones of inhibition diameters ranging from 17 mm - 31 mm and MIC50 values from 0.0003 mg/mL - 0.0005mg/mL for all the bacteria tested. Both extracts were bactericidal with minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) ranges from 2.5mg/mL - 20mg/mL. From the results, it can be concluded that both plants possess compounds with antimicrobial properties, thus validating scientifically their use in traditional medicine. However, more studies to document the respective plant-principles responsible for antimicrobial activity of these plants would shed more light on their functional properties.

Single institution experience with the Ladd's procedure in patients with heterotaxy and stage Ⅰ palliated single-ventricle

AIM:To investigate and describe our current institutional management protocol for single-ventricle patients who must undergo a Ladd's ***:We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients from January 2005 to March 2014 who were diagnosed with heterotaxy syndrome and an associated intestinal rotation anomaly who carried a cardiac diagnosis of functional single ventricle and were status post stage I palliation.A total of 8 patients with a history of stage I single-ventricle palliation underwent Ladd's procedure during this time *** reviewed each patients chart to determine if significant intraoperative or post-operative morbidity or mortality *** also described our protocolized management of these patients in the cardiac intensive care unit,which included pre-operative labs,echocardiography,milrinone infusion,as well as protocolized fluid administration and anticoagulation *** also reviewed the literature to determine the reported morbidity and mortality associated with the Ladd's procedure in this particular cardiac physiology and if other institutions have reported protocolized care of these ***:A total of 8 patients were identified to have heterotaxy with an intestinal rotation anomaly and single-ventricle heart disease that was status post single ventricle *** of these patients were palliated with a Blaylock-Taussig shunt,one of whom underwent a Norwood *** two other patients were palliated with a stent,which was placed in the ductus *** eight patients all underwent elective Ladd's procedure at the time of gastrostomy tube *** our protocol,all patients remained on aspirin prior to surgery and had no period where they were without *** patients remained on milrinone during and after the procedure and received fluid administration upon arrival to the cardiac intensive care unit to account for *** 8 patients experienced no intraoperative or post-o

Penile Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer Mimicking Priapism with Acute Urinary Retention: A Rare Case

Background: Penile metastasis of colorectal carcinoma is a rare phenomenon in clinical setting. They normally manifest as penile lesion and acute urinary retention. However, presentation of priapism is exceedingly rare. Aims: Discussion of this rare presentation as well as the diagnostic processes and subsequent management. Case Presentation: A 54-year-old male with a history of colorectal cancer presents with acute urinary retention. Examination of the patient demonstrates a semi-erect penis, with multiple palpable nodules on the shaft and penile meatus. Histological and imaging findings indicate penile metastasis of colorectal cancer. Conclusion: Biopsy via cystoscopy is used to obtain definitive diagnosis of penile metastasis. Urinary drainage followed by further cancer intervention or palliative care is crucial for effective management.

Background:Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is associated with impaired renal function,and both diseases often occur alongside other metabolic ***,the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in patients with NAFLD remain *** objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors for renal impairment in NAFLD ***:All adults aged 18-70 years with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD and transient elastography examination from eight Asian centers were enrolled in this prospective *** fibrosis and cirrhosis were assessed by FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase(FAST),Agile 3+and Agile 4 *** renal function and chronic kidney disease(CKD)were defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)with value of<90 mL/min/1.73 m^(2) and<60 mL/min/1.73 m^(2),respectively,as estimated by the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration(CKD-EPI)***:Among 529 included NAFLD patients,the prevalence rates of impaired renal function and CKD were 37.4%and 4.9%,*** multivariate analysis,a moderate-high risk of advanced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis according to Agile 3+and Agile 4 scores were independent risk factors for CKD(P<0.05).Furthermore,increased fasting plasma glucose(FPG)and blood pressure were significantly associated with impaired renal function after controlling for the other components of metabolic syndrome(P<0.05).Compared with patients with normoglycemia,those with prediabetes[FPG≥5.6 mmol/L or hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)≥5.7%]were more likely to have impaired renal function(P<0.05).Conclusions:Agile 3+and Agile 4 are reliable for identifying NAFLD patients with high risk of *** glycemic control in the prediabetic stage might have a potential renoprotective role in these patients.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an emerging and highly innovative additive manufacturing process by which to fabricate pre-designed,self-assembly structures with the ability to transform over ***,one of the critical challenges of 4D printing is the lack of advanced 4D printing systems that not only meet all the essential requirements of shape change but also possess smart,dynamic capabilities to spatiotemporally and instantly control the shape-transformation ***,we present a facile 4D printing platform which incorporates nanomaterials into the conventional stimuli-responsive polymer,allowing the 4D printed object to achieve a dynamic and remote controlled,on-time and position shape transformation.A proof-of-concept 4D printed brain model was created using near-infrared light (NIR) responsive nanocomposite to evaluate the capacity for controllable 4D transformation,and the feasibility of photothermal stimulation for modulating neural stem cell *** novel 4D printing strategy can not only be used to create dynamic 3D patterned biological structures that can spatiotemporally control their shapes or behaviors of transformation under a human benign stimulus (NIR),but can also provide a potential method for building complex self-morphing objects for widespread applications.
