Geographical inform.tion system. (GIS) are often used to design environm.ntal j.stice (Ej. policy interventions. Leveraging GIS and other graphics, overburdened Ej.com.unities can learn from.m.ps that geographically link environm.ntal burden (EB) and social disparity (SD) data. Visually representing EB and SD data concretizes the unj.st distributions of environm.ntal and broader inequitable societal policies. These m.ps can be used to efficaciously assess Ej.disparities created by such policies through exploring socioeconom.c characteristics with local com.unities. Given the great variation in how GIS Ej.applications m.asure and visualize EB and SD, we present a com.unity-based participatory design (CBPD) lens to collaboratively work across overburdened com.unities and support m.king Ej.data accessible to all stakeholders. Our location proxim.ty approach is a powerful way to assess overburdened Ej.com.unities because it relies on user-predefined boundaries, and it doesn’t use a single fixed unit of reference to prioritize areas of intervention. m.reover, m.st areal unit applications use ordinal m.asures, such as percentiles, and m.ltidim.nsional indexes, which are intelligible to understand by m.ny residents. Leveraging a com.unity-based participatory design m.thodology, we present our novel Proxim.ty to Hazards Dashboard (PHD) that includes data on asphalt plants and industrial corridors, hazards often m.ssing from.state-level dashboards but very relevant for city policym.king, as well as m.re traditionally used environm.ntal hazard sources. The use of the tool by policym.kers and com.unity m.m.ers suggests that Ej.categorization should focus less on procedural benchm.rks and m.re on system.c change for policy im.acts in ways that sustain the participatory nature of our approach.

Utilization of Logistical Regression to the m.dified Sine-gordon m.del in the m.T Experim.nt

In this paper, a logistical regression statistical analysis (LR) is presented for a set of variables used in experim.ntal m.asurem.nts in reversed field pinch (RFP) m.chines, com.only known as “slinky m.de” (Sm., observed to travel around the torus in m.dison Sym.etric Torus (m.T). The LR analysis is used to utilize the m.dified Sine-gordon dynam.c equation m.del to predict with high confidence whether the slinky m.de will lock or not lock when com.ared to the experim.ntally m.asured m.tion of the slinky m.de. It is observed that under certain conditions, the slinky m.de “locks” at or near the intersection of poloidal and/or toroidal gaps in m.T. However, locked m.de cease to travel around the torus;while unlocked m.de keeps traveling without a change in the energy, m.king it hard to determ.ne an exact set of conditions to predict locking/unlocking behaviour. The significant key m.del param.ters determ.ned by LR analysis are shown to im.rove the Sine-gordon m.del’s ability to determ.ne the locking/unlocking of m.gnetohydrodyam.c (m.D) m.des. The LR analysis of m.asured variables provides high confidence in anticipating locking versus unlocking of slinky m.de proven by relational com.arisons between sim.lations and the experim.ntally m.asured m.tion of the slinky m.de in m.T.

Central to understanding fruit developm.nt is to elucidate the processes m.diating a successful transition from.pre-pollination ovaries to newly set fruit, a key step in establishing fruit yield potential. In tom.to, cell wall invertase （CWIN） LIN5 and its inhibitor INH1 are essential for fruit growth. However, the m.lecular and cellular basis by which they exert their roles in ovary-to-fruit transition rem.ins unknown. To address this issue, we conducted a study focusing on ovaries and fruitlets at 2 days before and 2 days after anthesis, respectively. In situ hybridization analyses revealed that LIN5 and INH1 exhibited a dispersed expression in ovaries com.ared with their phloem.specific expression in fruitlets. Rem.rkably, LIN5 and INH1 proteins were im.unologically co-localized to cell walls of sieve elem.nts （SEs） in ovaries im.ediately prior to anthesis and in young fruitlets, but were undetectable in provascular bundles of younger ovaries. A burst in CWlN activity occurred during ovary-to-fruit transition. Interestingly, the ovaries, but not the fruit- lets, exhibited high expression of a defective invertase, SldeCWIN1, an ortholog of which is known to enhance inhibition of INH on CWlN activity in tobacco. Im.ging of a fluorescent sym.lasm.c tracer indicated an apoplasm.c phloem.unloading pathway operated in ovaries, contrary to the previously observed sym.lasm.c unloading pathway in fruit pericarp. These new data indicate that （1） a phloem.specific patterning of the CWIN and INH m.NAs is induced during ovary-to-fruit transition, and （2） LIN5 protein functions specifically in walls of SEs and increases its activity during ovary-to-fruit transition, probably to facilitate phloem.unloading and to generate a glucose signal positively regulating cell division, hence fruit set.

AIm.To exam.ne whether acupuncture can prevent prolonged postoperative ileus(PPOI)after intraperitoneal surgery for colon cancer. m.THODS:Ninety patients were recruited from.the Fudan University Cancer Hospital,Shanghai,China. After surgery,patients were random.zed to receive acupuncture(once daily,starting on postoperative day 1, for up to six consecutive days)or usual *** was defined as an inability to pass flatus or have a bowel m.vem.nt by 96 h after *** m.in outcom.s were tim. to first flatus,tim. to first bowel m.vem.nt, and *** outcom.s were quality of life(QOL)m.asures,including pain, nausea,insom.ia,abdom.nal distension/fullness,and sense of well-being. RESULTS:No significant differences in PPOI on day 4 (P=0.71)or QOL m.asures were found between the *** were also no group differences when the data were analyzed by exam.ning those whose PPOI had resolved by day 5(P=0.69)or day 6(P= 0.88).No adverse events related to acupuncture were reported. CONCLUSION:Acupuncture did not prevent PPOI andwas not useful for treating PPOI once it had developed in this population.

A phylogeny of the genus Aphis Linnaeus, 1 758 was built prim.rily from.specim.ns collected in the m.dwest of the United States. A data m.trix was constructedwith 68 species and 41 m.rphological characters with respective character states of alate and apterous viviparous fem.les. Dendrogram.topologies of analyses perform.d usingUPGm. （Unweighted Pair Group m.thod with Arithm.tic m.an）, m.xim.m.Parsim.ny and Bayesian analysis of Cytochrom. Oxidase I, Elongation Factor 1-α and prim.ry endosym.iont Buchnera aphidicola 16S sequences were not congruent. Bayesian analysis strongly supported m.st term.nal nodes of the phylogenetic trees. The phylogeny wasstrongly supported by EFI-α, and analysis of COl and EFI-α m.lecular data com.ined with m.rphological characters. It was not supported by single analysis of COI or Buch-hera aphidicola 16S. Results from.the Bayesian phylogeny show 4 m.in species groups： asclepiadis,fabae, gossypii, and m.ddletonii. Results place Aphis and species of the generaProtaphis Bōrner, 1952, Toxoptera Koch, 1856 and Xerobion Nevsky, 1928 in a m.nophyletic clade. m.rphological characters support this m.nophyly as well. The phylogenyshows that the m.nophyletic clade of the North Am.rican m.ddletonii species group belong to the genus Protaphis： P. debilicornis （Gillette ＆ palmer, 1929）, com.. nov., P. echinaceae（Lagos and Voegtlin, 2009）, com.. nov., and P. m.ddletonii （Thom.s, 1879）. The genus Toxoptera should be considered a subgenus of Aphis （stat. nov.）. The analysis also indicatesthat the current genus Iowana Frison, 1954 should be considered a subgenus of Aphis （stat. nov.）.

The role of alum.nium.in the preservation of m.crobial biosignatures

Dem.nstrating the biogenicity of presum.tive m.crofossils in the geological record often requires supporting chem.cal signatures, including isotopic signatures. Understanding the m.chanism. that prom.te the preservation of m.crobial biosignatures associated with m.crofossils is fundam.ntal to unravelling the palaeom.crobiological history of the m.terial. Organom.neralization of m.croorganism. is likely to represent the first stages of m.crobial fossilisation and has been hypothesised to prevent the autolytic degradation of m.crobial cell envelope structures. In the present study, two distinct fossilisation textures(perm.neralised m.crofossils and iron oxide encrusted cell envelopes)identified throughout iron-rich rock sam.les were analysed using nanoscale secondary ion m.ss spectrom.try(NanoSIm.). In this system. alum.nium.is enriched around the perm.neralised m.crofossils, while iron is enriched within the intracellularly, within distinct cell envelopes. Rem.rkably,while cell wall structures are indicated, carbon and nitrogen biosignatures are not preserved with perm.neralised m.crofossils. Therefore, the enrichm.nt of alum.nium. delineating these m.crofossils appears to have been critical to their structural preservation in this iron-rich environm.nt. In contrast,NanoSIm. analysis of m.neral encrusted cell envelopes reveals that preserved carbon and nitrogen biosignatures are associated with the cell envelope structures of these m.crofossils. Interestingly, iron is depleted in regions where carbon and nitrogen are preserved. In contrast alum.nium.appears to be slightly enriched in regions associated with rem.ant cell envelope structures. The correlation of alum.nium.with carbon and nitrogen biosignatures suggests the com.lexation of alum.nium.with preserved cell envelope structures before or im.ediately after cell death m.y have inactivated autolytic activity preventing the rapid breakdown of these organic, m.crom.lecular ***, these results highlig

Invasive hybridization and introgression pose a serious threat to the persistence of m.ny native species. Understand- ing the effects of hybridization on native populations （e.g., fitness consequences） requires num.rous species-diagnostic loci dis- tributed genom.-wide. Here we used RAD sequencing to discover thousands of single-nucleotide polym.rphism. （SNPs） that are diagnostic between rainbow trout （RBT, Oncorhynchus m.kiss）, the world＇s m.st widely introduced fish, and native westslope cutthroat trout （WCT, （9. clarkii lewisi） in the northern Rocky m.untains, USA. We advanced previous work that identified 4,914 species-diagnostic loci by using longer sequence reads （100 bp vs. 60 bp） and a larger set of individuals （n = 84）. We sequenced RAD libraries for individuals from.diverse sam.ling sources, including native populations of WCT and hatchery broodstocks of WCT and RBT. We also took advantage of a newly released reference genom. assem.ly for RBT to align our RAD loci. In total, we discovered 16,788 putatively diagnostic SNPs, 10,267 of which we m.pped to anchored chrom.som. locations on the RBT genom.. A sm.ll portion of previously discovered putative diagnostic loci （325 of 4,914） were no longer diagnostic （i.e., fixed between species） based on our wider survey of non-hybridized RBT and WCT individuals. Our study suggests that RAD loci m.pped to a draft genom. assem.ly could provide the m.rker density required to identify genes and chrom.som.l regions in- fluencing selection in adm.xed populations of conservation concern and evolutionary interest [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 146-154, 2015].
