Binary fluorozirconate glassZrF_(4)·BaF_(2) has been studied by molecular dynamical simulation using parameter-free gordon-Kim *** these simulations a novel technique is employed to monitor the motion of ions,thus the structure pictures of glass and the microscopic motion mechanism of ionic conduction are clearly and directly *** glass networks commonly are formed by ZrF8,ZrF7 or ZrF6 polyhedra,cross linked by Ba-F ionic *** mean distance of the ionic nearest neighboring at 300K is about 3.90Å(Zr-Zr),3.87Å(Zr-Ba),and 1.96Å(Zr-F).The two stronger peaks of five main peaks of vibrational spectra are at about 540-600 and 460-510cm^(-1) and three weaker peaks at about 386-416,322-348,and 183-196cm^(-1).The other properties of glass:density,thermal expansion coefficient,polarization,and glass transition temperature are also examined.

Purpose Keratoconus is a chronic, noninflammatory disease of the cornea with onset in early adulthood. As these years are important to financial and social health, keratoconus may have more severe impact on quality of life than would be expected given its clinical severity. We examined the vision- related quality of life of patients in the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus (CLEK) Study. Design Crosssectional study. Methods The National Eye Institute- Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI- VFQ) was administered to 1166 CLEK Study patients at their first annual follow- up examination. Associations between clinical and demographic factors and NEI- VFQ scale scores were evaluated. Results Binocular entrance visual acuity worse than 20/40 was associated with lower quality of life scores on all scales except General Health and Ocular Pain. A steep keratometric reading (average of both eyes)>52 diopters (D) was associated with lower scores on the Mental Health, Role Difficulty, Driving, Dependency, and Ocular Pain scales. Scores for CLEK patients on all scales were between patients with category 3 and category 4 agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) except General Health, which was better than AMD patients, and Ocular Pain, which was worse than AMD patients. Conclusions Keratoconus is a disease of relatively low prevalence that rarely results in blindness, but because it affects young adults, the magnitude of its public health impact is disproportionate to its prevalence and clinical severity.

Background/Goals: There are limited data regarding the frequency and proporti onality of drug- induced hepatotoxicity in the United States. We sought to dete rmine the scope of nonfulminant drug- induced hepatitis as seen in a community - based hepatology referral service. Study: From a population of 4,039 outpatie nts referred for evaluation of acute (n = 96) and chronic (n = 3,943) liver dise ase over a 10- year period, we reviewed the records of those patients diagnosed with acute bona fide drug- induced hepatitis. Results: Thirty- two patients p resented with self- limited acute drug- induced hepatitis, representing 0.8% of all hepatology patients and 33% of those patients presenting with acute li ver inj.ry. Antibiotics (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, minocycline, nitrofurantoi n, an investigational ketolide antibiotic, trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole, and trovafloxacin) were the class of drugs most frequently implicated (14 of 32; 44 % ), while amiodarone was the single agent most commonly associated with liver inj.ry (7 of 32; 22% ). The mean age of affected patients was 52.2 years, and w e found a male predominance (18 of 32; 56% ). The mean time to biochemical reso lution after discontinuation of the offending agent was 14.1 weeks. Conclusions: Drug- induced hepatitis is an uncommon entity in clinical hepatology but does represent a significant proportion of acute self- limited liver disease in the United States. Antibiotics and amiodarone were the most common drug culprits in our population. Time to resolution following the discontinuation of the offendin g agent may be protracted. Prospective studies are needed to further assess the burden of drug- induced liver inj.ry.

Review on the Use of Modulated Electro-Hyperthermia as a Stand-Alone Therapy in a Palliative Setting: Potential for Further Research?

Background: Hyperthermia (HT) in oncology was originally applied as a stand-alone treatment (monotherapy), but achieving temperatures required to cause cellular destruction (>43ºC) proved to be challenging. Lower temperatures may increase the risk of dissemination of the treated tumours. Hyperthermia in the current context of oncology therefore aims to achieve moderate temperatures of 39ºC - 41.5ºC and is applied in combination with chemotherapy (ChT) and/or radiotherapy (RT). Modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) applies amplitude modulation to an electric field generated by a capacitive coupled set-up, to selectively heat tumours. As mEHT does not appear to increase the risk of disease dissemination, it has been investigated as a stand-alone treatment for patients with advanced disease and who have exhausted all other treatment options. This report is a descriptive review of papers in oncology which report on the use of mEHT as a stand-alone treatment in a palliative setting. We aim to establish whether there is motivation for the development of trials to further investigate mEHT as a monotherapy in a palliative setting. Methods: A literature search was conducted using the key words “Oncothermia”, “modulated electro-hyperthermia” and “monotherapy”, and case reports were excluded. Only studies which applied mEHT without ChT or RT;for palliative intent;when conventional therapies have failed;or when no further options are available, were included. Results: Six phase I/II studies on tumours of the liver, brain, pancreas, and stomach were included. The studies demonstrated the safety of mEHT;disease stabilisation;and improved quality of life. Conclusion: mEHT may have a role in the palliative management of certain tumours in the absence of any other treatment options. The development of robustly designed studies on mEHT for palliative management of oncology patients is motivated.

The van der Waals force originates from the electromagnetic interaction between quantum fluctuationinduced charges. It is a ubiquitous but subtle force which plays an important role and has a wide range of applications in surface related phenomena like adhesion, friction,and colloidal stability. Calculating the van der Waals force between closely spaced metallic nanoparticles is very challenging due to the strong concentration of electromagnetic fields at the nanometric gap. Especially, at such a small length scale, the macroscopic description of the dielectric properties no longer suffices. The diffuse nonlocal nature of the induced surface electrons which are smeared out near the boundary has to be considered. Here,we review the recent progress on using three-dimensional transformation optics to study the van der Waals forces between closely spaced nanostructures. Through mapping a seemingly asymmetric system to a more symmetric counterpart, transformation optics enables us to look into the behavior of van der Waals forces at extreme length scales,where the effect of nonlocality is found to dramatically weaken the van der Waals interactions.
