Impact of industrial effluent on growth and yield of rice(Oryza sativa L.) in silty clay loam soil

Degradation of soil and water from discharge of untreated industrial effluent is alarming in Bangladesh. Therefore, buildup of heavy metals in soil from contaminated effluent, their entry into the food chain and effects on rice yield were quantified in a pot experiment. The treatments were comprised of 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% industrial effluents applied as irrigation water. Effluents, initial soil, different parts of rice plants and post-harvest pot soil were analyzed for various elements, including heavy metals. Application of elevated levels of effluent contributed to increased heavy metals in pot soils and rice roots due to translocation effects, which were transferred to rice straw and grain. The results indicated that heavy metal toxicity may develop in soil because of contaminated effluent *** metals are not biodegradable, rather they accumulate in soils, and transfer of these metals from effluent to soil and plant cells was found to reduce the growth and development of rice plants and thereby contributed to lower yield. Moreover, a higher concentration of effluent caused heavy metal toxicity as well as reduction of growth and yield of rice, and in the long run a more aggravated situation may threaten human lives,which emphasizes the obligatory adoption of effluent treatment before its release to the environment, and regular monitoring by government agencies needs to be ensured.

Long-Term Effect of Industrial Waste Water Irrigation on Soil Chemical Properties

A laboratory experiment was conducted in Soil Science Division of BRRI during 2011 aimed to determine the vertical distribution of soil chemical properties under long-term industrial waste water irrigated rice field. Waste water irrigated rice field seemed to create some differences in soil pH profile. The pHW and pHKCl in all soil depth was higher with waste water irrigated rice field. The surface charge of both the soils was considerably negative. Waste water irrigated rice field developed more negative charges in soils. Irrigation with waste water increased Electrical Conductivity （EC） in rice soils profile. The organic carbon content （%） started to decrease sharply with the increase in soil depth. Organic carbon content was higher with waste water irrigated rice soils Total nitrogen （%） was high with underground water irrigated rice soils in surface but at deeper, total N was similar in both soils. Olsen P （mg/kg） was higher with underground water irrigated soil at 0-5 cm depth but at 5-100 cm soils profile, it was higher with waste water irrigated rice soils. Micronutrients （Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn） and heavy metals （Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr） in soils were increased significantly through irrigation with waste water in rice-rice cropping pattern.

This paper is conceived at a time when new paradigms are sought for the development of a framework to deal with the problem of forest resources degradation. Deforestation in Bangladesh, has reached an alarming rate in recent years. The forest coverage of Bangladesh is one of the lowest and the deforestation rate is the highest of any country in the world. Coupled with the process of deforestation, flawed afforestration programmes have seriously exposed Bangladesh to environmental vulnerability. Considering this situation various strategies should be taken at different levels. The main objective of this paper is to suggest the possible steps that Bangladesh could halt and reverse the trend of deforestation. An extensive literature review and structured interviews of key informants have been used to collect relevant information to understand the reasons and consequences of forest degradation in the country. Based on the information gathered, this paper suggests some positive steps where the Government could be the main mitigating actor by implementing integrated programmes, which will also ensure mass awareness and wider impact.

We performed a prospective study to evaluate the accuracy of Doppler ultrasound in identifying patients for carotid intervention in general practice *** patient referred to our endovascular service for diagnostic angiography to evaluate for carotid *** patient was interviewed and examined by a *** consisted of symptomatic patients with 50% stenosis and asymptomatic patients with 60%stenosis by Doppler *** pertaining to demographic and cerebrovascular risk factors and the results of the carotid Doppler ultrasound were *** severity of stenosis on angiograms was measured with North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial criteria by a blinded *** results of both studies were compared to determine the relative accuracy of ultrasound *** 158 patients(mean age,62±7.9 years) who met Doppler ultrasound criteria,20(12%) and 30(18%) patients were found to have 30%to 49%or<30%stenosis by angiography,*** positive predictive value of carotid Doppler ultrasound for identifying appropriate symptomatic candidates for carotid intervention(angiographic stenosis 50%) was 70%,with a false-positive value of 30%.The positive predictive value of carotid Doppler ultrasound for identifying appropriate asymptomatic candidates for carotid intervention (angiographic stenosis 60%) was 59%,with a false-positive value of 41%.In 158 patients who underwent cerebral angiography alone,minor complications were observed in two patients.
