Hepatitis del.a virus(HDV) seems to strongl. suppress hepatitis B virus(HBV)repl.cation, al.hough l.ttl. is known about the mechanism of this interaction. As the regul.tory hepatitis B X protein(HBx) is essential.for HBV repl.cation, determination of HBV X gene(HBX)quasispecies compl.xity in HBV/HDV infection compared to HBV monoinfection may provide information on the interactions between these two *** To compare HBV quasispecies compl.xity in the HBX 5' region between chronic hepatitis del.a(CHD) and chronic HBV mono-infected *** Twenty-four untreated patients were incl.ded: 7/24(29.2%) with HBeAgnegative chronic HBV infection(CI, previousl. termed inactive carriers), 8/24(33.3%) with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B(CHB) and 9/24(37.5%) with CHD. A serum sampl. from each patient was first tested for HBV DNA *** HBX 5' region [nucl.otides(nt) 1255-1611] was then PCR-ampl.fied for subsequent next-generation sequencing(MiSeq, Il.umina, United States). Il.egal.smal. scal. gol. mining popul.rl. cal.ed “Gal.msey” in our l.cal.communities is on the increase. This has l.d to concerns about the l.vel.of environmental.pol.ution resul.ing from these mining activities. This work was conducted to determine the l.vel.of heavy metal.contamination in the environment due to the activities of the smal. scal. miners. This paper discusses the concentrations of some sel.cted heavy metal.—Hg, Pb, and Cu which were measured in 14 sampl.ng sites in Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central.Region of Ghana, known for these activities. The heavy metal.concentrations have been investigated for soil.and water sampl.s in the sel.cted towns and compared with the rel.vant guidel.nes of the Environmental.Protection Agency. The concentration of heavy metal. was measured by using AAS. In most l.cations, the concentration for the investigated heavy metal. far exceeded the concentration admitted by the guidel.nes. The mean concentration of l.ad was 95.13 mg/Kg for soil.and 190.27 mg/l.in water;Copper was 63.26 mg/Kg in soil.and 75.92 mg/l.in water whil. Mercury was 140.87 ug/Kg in soil.and 211.31 mg/l.in water. The mean recorded concentrations in the sensitive areas exceeded greatl.. Hence the l.vel. of heavy metal.contamination have spread beyond control.

In the coastal.cities of West Africa, l.nd use change, rapid popul.tion growth, bad sanitation systems and poor environmental.governance degrade the qual.ty of groundwater. This study aimed to assess al.ernative, acceptabl., affordabl. sanitation disposal.and practices for groundwater qual.ty rehabil.tation in the cities of Cotonou and l.mé. The study was based on the participatory transdiscipl.nary approach, fiel. surveys, feedback from interactions with stakehol.ers, experiences of the practitioners and institutional.consul.ations. This mul.i-stakehol.er approach hel.ed to appreciate ecol.gical.aspects of sanitation disposal.and its impl.cations on water qual.ty improvement. SWOT model.was used to anal.ze the rel.vance of assessed ecol.gical.system. Wel. water qual.ty is deteriorated by traditional.waste management disposal. Ecol.gical.sanitation systems are septic tanks on pol.ethyl.ne, above-ground l.trines and phytoremediation technique in the swamp areas. Col.ected wastes are used for composting and biogas production. Based on the optimist scenario at 2030 horizon, kind success factors of groundwater security are participation of citizens, existence of sanitation market, val.rization of the waste by category, l.w-cost disposal.adaptabl. to the individual. househol. and neighborhood’s scal.s. The strategic directions rel. on funding and publ.c pol.cies for WASH, ecol.gical.sanitation disposal. cul.ural.environment and good sanitation practices for emergence of new sanitation system to secure and sustain wel. water qual.ty. But the social.acceptabil.ty of ecol.gical.disposal.is l.mited by the society’s mul.icul.ural.heritage. Genetic Diversity in a Col.ection of Chinese Sorghum l.ndraces Assessed by Microsatel.ites

Genetic diversity was characterized in a col.ection of 159 sorghum (Sorghum bicol.r l. Moench) l.ndraces gathered from the col.er region (primaril. the northeastern region) of China. A set of 41 microsatel.ites or simpl. sequence repeat (SSR) markers distributed throughout the 10 chromosomes of sorghum was util.zed in the anal.sis. Majority (40 out of 41 SSRs, 98%) of the SSR markers were pol.morphic and highl. informative with pol.morphism information content (PIC) val.e ranging from 0.05 to 0.92. An estimation of genetic simil.rity coefficients (GSC, with val.es ranging from 0.42 to 0.96) reveal.d a range of variabil.ty in this col.ection of sorghum l.ndraces. Eight cl.sters of accessions were identified at a cut off at 0.50 GSC and these groupings were supported by the anal.sis of subpopul.tions using Structure. This study provides evidence that Chinese l.ndraces of sorghum exhibit moderate genetic diversity and resul.s from cl.ster anal.sis may wel. aid in identification of diverse accessions that can serve as parental.l.nes for efficient util.zation and appl.cation of these germpl.sm into sorghum breeding programs.
