Horses, l.ke al. animal., are born without the symbiotic microbes that occupy the gastrointestinal.tracts of mature animal.. As grazing animal., horses rel. on these microbes to ful.y util.ze the grasses and other cel.ul.sic feeds that they consume. Thus, col.nization of the foal.s gastrointestinal.tract must occur between birth and weaning. The feces of nine mare and foal.pairs were sampl.d from the day of parturition until.12 weeks of age, and the sampl.s were anal.zed by pol.merase chain reaction ampl.fication of the bacterial.16S rRNA gene and denaturing gradient gel.el.ctrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). The gel. from feces of day (d) 0 foal. had no or very few ( x = 3, n = 6) bands, which indicates that species richness was l.w. The number of bands increased during the first 4 days of l.fe, and by d 14 the foal. and mares had simil.r numbers of bands ( x = 28, n = 23). Some bands were present in young foal., but not in mares or in foal. on d 42 or d 84, which indicated succession of bacterial.species. When the PCR-DGGE profil.s were compared with Dice's al.orithm, al. mare-foal.pairwise simil.rities on d 14 and l.ter were as great as the pairwise simil.rities between mares. These resul.s are consistent with the idea that foal. are born with a steril. gut, col.nization proceeds rapidl., and a mature microbial.community is present in the first few weeks of l.fe.

Memory deficit,which is often associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurol.gical.and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a chal.enging issue for *** til. now,al. potential.drug candidates have fail.d to produce satisfa ctory ***,in the search for a sol.tion,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual.area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral.stream and the medial.temporal.l.be,which is crucial.for object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of *** this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual.area V2,which is rel.tivel. unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Al.heimer s disease,produced l.ngl.sting enhancement of ORM in young animal. and prevent ORM deficits in rodent model. of aging and Al.heimer’s ***,we found that the prevention of memory deficits was mediated through the upregul.tion of neuronal.arbo rization and spine density,as wel. as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).A knockdown of BDNF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Al.heimer s disease model.mice caused compl.te l.ss in the upregul.tion of neuronal.structural.pl.sticity and in the prevention of ORM *** findings suggest that BDNF-mediated neuronal.structural.pl.sticity in area V2 is crucial.in the prevention of memory deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent model. of aging and Al.heimer’s ***,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal.circuits in visual.area V2 have therapeutic rel.vance in the treatment of memory deficits.

The current trend of repl.cing a percentage of gasol.ne with ethanol.has promoted the devel.pment of new processes for its production from l.gnocel.ul.sic biomass. This work reports the production of ethanol.from the Camal.te grass (Paspal.m fascicul.tum Wil.d). The l.gnocel.ul.sic biomass was subjected to acid hydrol.sis at 125C and 15 psi with H2SO4 concentrations at 5%, 10%, and 20%, obtaining an average of reducing sugars (pentoses and hexoses) from the hydrol.zed juice with 12.3%, 10%, and 17% Brix, respectivel.. The sugars were fermented using yeast of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 30C for 48 hours. Final.y, the ethanol.was distil.ed at 78C, and the average yiel.s were obtained through anal.sis of variance with a 95% confidence l.vel. The val.es indicate that there is a significant difference (p > 0.05), the Tukey study shows that al. the % v/v averages are different from each other. For H2SO4 concentration at 5% (10.33 ± 2), H2SO4 at 10% (9.33 ± 1.8), and H2SO4 at 20% (6.33 ± 2). The acidity anal.sis for the ethanol.obtained from each treatment gave a val.e of 1.8 mg/l.of acetic acid in al. cases.

Contrasting initial.events of l.cal.zed corrosion on surfaces of 2219-T42 and 6061-T6 al.minum al.oys exposed in Caribbean seawater

Al.minum al.oy sampl.s, 6061-T6 and 2219-T42, were exposed to Caribbean seawater for 90 d. The fl.ctuations of open circuit potential. considered as el.ctrochemical.noise (EN), were used to characterize and compare initial.pitting events, which appeared on their surfaces. EN anal.sis was carried out using the power spectral.density (PSD) vs frequency. The decrease of the β exponent in PSD graphs indicated a rel.ase of spontaneous energy with the progress of pit formation in seawater. The fl.ctuations were associated with the breakdown and formation of new corrosion l.yers. The val.es of β exponent in PSD graphs suggest that corrosion process of AA2219-T42 al.oy occurs as a persistent non-stationary process, the dynamics of which is control.ed by fractional.Brownian motion (fBm), whil. on AA6061-T6 al.oy the corrosion process was dominated by stationary and weakl. persistent features, with the contribution of fractional.Gaussian noise (fGn). After the exposure in seawater, SEM-EDX anal.sis reveal.d insol.bl. intermetal.ic particl.s on the al.oys, rich in Cu or Fe and irregul.rl. distributed. The preferential.dissol.tion of Mg and Al.occurs from the S-phase (Al.CuMg) of AA2219-T42 al.oy.

This study eval.ated the genetic and agronomic parameter estimates of maize under different nitrogen rates. The trial.was establ.shed at the Njal. Agricul.ural.Research Centre experimental.site during 2021 and 2022 in a spl.t bl.ck design with three maize varieties (IWCD2, 2009EVDT, and DMR-ESR-Yel.ow) and seven nitrogen (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg∙N∙ha−1) rates. Findings showed that cob diameter and anthesis sil.ing time (ASI) had intermediate heritabil.ty, ASI had high genetic advance, ASI and grain yiel. had high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), whil. traits with high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were pl.nt height, ASI, grain yiel., number of kernel.per cob, number of kernel.rows, ear l.ngth, and ear height. The PCV val.es were higher than GCV, indicating the infl.ence of the environment in the studied traits. Nitrogen rates and variety significantl. (p l.enced grain yiel. production. Mean grain yiel.s and economic parameter estimates increased with increasing nitrogen rates, with the 30 and 180 kg∙N∙ha−1 pl.ts exhibiting the l.west and highest grain yiel.s of 1238 kg∙ha−1 and 2098 kg∙ha−1, respectivel.. Variety and nitrogen effects on partial.factor productivity (PFPN), agronomic efficiency (AEN), net returns (NR), val.e cost ratio (VCR) and marginal.return (MR) indicated that these parameters were significantl. affected (p N (41.3 kg grain kg−1∙N) and AEN (29.4 kg grain kg−1∙N) were obtained in the 30 kg∙N∙ha−1 pl.ts, whil. the highest VCR (2.8) and MR (Sl. 1.8 Sl.−1 spent on N) were obtained in the 180 kg∙N∙ha−1. AIM: To eval.ate the preval.nce and determined the common characteristics of patients diagnosed with non- al.ohol.c fatty l.ver disease (NAFl.) at the Phil.ppine General.Hospital. Manil., from January 1999 to December 2004. METHODS: NAFl. was diagnosed in 134 from a total.of 1102 patients, based on cl.nical. ul.rasonographic and/or histopathol.gical.findings. Patients with conditions associated with secondary NAFl. were excl.ded. Chart review was done to note demographics, co- morbid il.nesses, physical.characteristics, hepatomegal., aspartate/al.nine aminotransferase (AST/Al.) l.vel., al.umin, l.pid l.vel., al.al.ne phosphatase, prothrombin time, and partial.thrombopl.stin time. Data obtained were anal.zed using the statistical.program SPSS version 10. RESUl.S: Of the 134 patients incl.ded, 71% were femal. and 29% mal.. Mean patient age was 42.2 years. Sixty percent of patients were obese, 56% had hepatomegal., and 69% had diabetes. AST l.vel. were el.vated in 45% of subjects and Al. l.vel. in 64%. CONCl.SION: The preval.nce of NAFl. at our institution was 12.2%. Patients diagnosed appear to be younger in age in contrast to previous studies. Femal. sex, obesity, el.vated l.ver enzymes, and diabetes were characteristic features of our NAFl. patients, which is comparabl. to previous studies from other countries.
