Comparing carbon accumulation in restored and natural wetland soils of coastal Louisiana

Louisiana’s chronic wetland deterioration has resulted in massive soil organic matter loss and subsequent carbon release through *** combat these losses,and reestablish ecosystem function,goods,and services,many restoration projects have been constructed or planned throughout coastal *** are significant data gaps and conflicting results regarding wetland contributions to global warming,especially related to carbon sequestration in restored *** exceptionally large data set was used to derive carbon accumulation rates from key soil characteristics and *** and comparisons of bulk density,organic matter,total carbon,vertical accretion(short-and longer-term),and carbon accumulation rates were made across time(chronosequence) and space(i.e.,coastwide,watershed basins,and vegetation zones).Carbon accumulation rates in the Louisiana coastal zone were generally correlated to hydrogeomorphology,with higher rates occurring in zones of high river connectivity or in swamp or higher salinity tolerant *** average,naturally occurring wetlands had higher carbon accumulation rates than restoration *** some restoration measures were higher,and most showed increasing carbon accumulation rates over *** demonstrate that although wetland restoration provides many ecosystem benefits,the associated carbon sequestration may also provide useful measures for climate change management.

Intermodal four-wave mixing(FWm)processes have recently attracted significant interest for all-optical signal processing applications thanks to the possibility to control the propagation properties of waves exciting distinct spatial modes of the same *** allows,in principle,to place signals in different spectral regions and satisfy the phase matching condition over considerably larger bandwidths compared to intramodal ***,the demonstrations reported so far have shown a limited bandwidth and suffered from the lack of on-chip components designed for broadband manipulation of different *** demonstrate here a silicon-rich silicon nitride wavelength converter based on Bragg scattering intermodal FWm,which integrates mode conversion,multiplexing and de-multiplexing functionalities *** system enables wavelength conversion between pump waves and a signal located in different telecommunication bands(separated by 60 nm)with a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 70 nm,which represents,to our knowledge,the widest bandwidth ever achieved in an intermodal FWm-based system.

Objective:To evaluate the potential toxic effects of mine tailings exposure among the fisher folks residing near and far from the Calancan Bay,marinduque,using the micronucleus assay as an ***:The fisher folks residing near and far from the Calancan Bay were interviewed and the presence and frequency of cells with micronucleus in exfoliated buccal epithelial cells were ***:Results showed that the prevalence of cells with micronucleus was higher among the fisher folks who were directly exposed to the mine tailings as compared with those fisher folks who reside in a community without exposure of mine tailings and history of mining(Pmicronuclei observed near the Calancan Bay could possibly indicate a prolonged chemical stress caused by the toxic heavy metals in the mine tailings and the environment.

B lymphocytes regulate airway granulocytic inflammation and cytokine production in a murine model of fungal allergic asthma

Sensitization to fungi often leads to a severe form of asthma that is particularly difficult to manage clinically, resulting in increased morbidity and hospitalizations in these patients. Although B lymphocytes might exacerbate asthma symptoms through the production of IgE, these cells might also be important in the protective response against inhaled fungi. Through cytokine release and T-cell interactions, these lymphocytes might also influence the development and maintenance of airway wall fibrosis. JH-/- mice lack the JHgene for the heavy chain component of antibodies, which is critical for B-cell function and survival. These animals have facilitated the elucidation of the role of B iymphocytes in a number of immune responses; however, JH-/- mice have not been used to study fungal allergy. In this study, we examined the role of B lymphocytes using an Aspergillus fumigatus murine fungal aeroallergen model that mimics human airway disease that is triggered by environmental fungal exposure. We compared disease progression in sensitized wild-type BALB/c and JH-/- mice that were exposed to repeated fungal exposure and found no differences in airway hyperresponsiveness, overall pulmonary inflammation or collagen deposition around the large airways. However, the levels of the Th2-type cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 were significantly attenuated in the airways of JH-/- mice relative to the BALB/c controls. By contrast, levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-17A and IL-6 were significantly elevated in the JH-/- animals, and there was significantly more robust airway eosinophilia and neutrophilia than in control animals. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that B lymphocytes help to regulate granulocytic responses to fungal exDosure in the pulmonary compartment.

Probing shock geometry via the charge to mass ratio dependence of heavy ion spectra from multiple spacecraft observations of the 2013 November 4 event

In large Solar Energetic Particle （SEP） events, ions can be accelerated at coronal mass ejection （CmE）-driven shocks to very high energies. The spectra of heavy ions in many large SEP events show features such as roll-overs or spectral breaks. In some events when the spectra are plotted in terms of energy/nucleon, they can be shifted relative to each other to make the spectral breaks align. The amount of shift is charge to mass ratio （Q/A） dependent and varies from event to event. This can be understood if the spectra of heavy ions are organized by the diffusion coefficients （Cohen et al. 2005）. In the work of Li et al. （2009）, the Q/A dependence of the scaling is related to shock geometry when the CmE-driven shock is close to the Sun. For events where multiple in-situ spacecraft observations exist, one may expect that different spacecraft are connected to different portions of the CmE-driven shock that have different shock geometries, therefore yielding different Q/A dependence. In this work, we examine one SEP event which occurred on 2013 November 4. We study the Q/A dependence of the energy scaling for heavy ion spectra using helium, oxygen and iron ions. Observations from STEREO-A, STEREO-B and ACE are examined. We find that the scalings are different for different spacecraft. We suggest that this is because ACE, STEREO- A and STEREO-B are connected to different parts of the shock that have different shock geometries. Our analysis indicates that studying the Q/A scaling of in-situ particle spectra can serve as a powerful tool to remotely examine the shock geometry for large SEP events.

Evaluation of potential surface instability using finite element method in Kharsali Village,Yamuna Valley,Northwest Himalaya

Kharsali village, located in the Northwest Himalaya near the confluence of the Yamuna River and Unta Gad, is situated on a thick(>150 m) paleolandslide deposit. The village is continuously being eroded at its base by the two rivers. Cracks are noted in most houses while the ancient Shani Temple lying to the south of the village has tilted ~5° towards the northeast. Three slope sections(S-1, S-2, S-3) were modelled and analysed to determine the displacement and shear strain patterns of the slopes. Based on surface failure conditions, potential slope instability of the Kharsali village was evaluated from 2D Finite Element method(FEm) using Shear Strain Reduction(SSR) analysis in the Phase2 software. Results indicate a critical Stress Reduction Factor(SRF) of 1.5 for the southern edge of the village(S-1) housing the Shani Temple. The development of failure surfaces at its lower portion signifies the propagating, progressive nature of the slope. The S-2 slope section is most vulnerable to slope failure, with a critical SRF of 1.08. This has been inferred by the formation of failure surfaces with displacements of 0.05-0.08 m. The S-3 section in the northern part of the Kharsali shows highest critical SRF of 2.76. The un-metalled road section in the north of the village near S-3 hasdeveloped a failure surface with displacement of 0.003-0.004 m, and a zone of subsidence. The S-3 section is relatively stable, whereas the S-2 section is the most vulnerable portion of the village.

Feeding dysfunction is a frequent presenting symptom of eosinophilic esophagitis(EoE). Here we present 3 children of various ages whose manifestations of EoE associated feeding dysfunction led to significant and life altering impact on their growth and development. Early identification of presenting symptoms of EoE will allow for prompt diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatments. Recognition of salient features of dysfunction and treatment by feeding therapists and nutritionists led to symptom resolution and growth.

A novel Cu-based composite frictional train brake material composed of several elements such as Al, SiO2, Fe, graphite, Sn, mn and moS2 re-enforced with other elements was treated under Powder metallurgy （P/m） route. Well prepared powders were hydraulically compacted at 650mPa. The materials were sintered at three different temperatures （850oC, 900oC and 950oC） at a constant pressure. The dry sliding friction and wear characteristics of three different sintering treatment temperatures were investigated and the results were remarkable. The tribological behavior of these materials was analyzed by pad-on-disk tests without lubrication and the coefficient of friction, wear rate and wear number were studied in order to identify the effects of the sintering temperature on the base materials composition. The porosities were found to be very high but were adequate to give the right self lubrication properties and to reduce seizure. It was found that the porosity varies inversely proportional to the increase in sintering temperature. The pores in the sintered material were mainly solid lubricants such as graphite and other low melting elements. This also resulted in poor hardness and mechanical properties, which were compensated by its ability to reduce seizure. much lower wear frictional coefficient, k and the highest coefficient friction,μwith a high wear number, Wn were obtained, indicating a good wear resistance property of the friction material. Three forms of wear mechanisms were observed during the dry sliding process, namely;delamination wear, plowing wear and abrasive wear. The abrasive wear results in flake or break-away debris. These wear mechanisms were found to be responsible for high wear rates on samples sintered at 850oC and 900oC. Generally, the materials demonstrated excellent brake performance and wear resistance.
