Objective: To develop an anim.l m.del for teaching open laryngotracheal surgical procedures. m.thods: The heads and necks from.5 pre-pubescent sheep were harvested after hum.ne anesthesia. After 2—5 days to allow for rigor m.rtis to resolve, a specim.n was supported with sandbags on an operating table. Operative procedures including tracheotom., m.dialization laryngoplasty, anterior cartilage grafting, tracheal resection with prim.ry anastom.sis, and laryngectom. with closure of the pharynx were attem.ted. Results: The ovine head and neck provided an accurate m.del for sim.lation of all attem.ted procedures. Ovine tissue resem.led that of hum.ns in m.chanical properties and handling. Postsurgical endoscopy confirm.d graft alignm.nt. Conclusions: The sheep head and neck provides an inexpensive, realistic, and safe m.del for surgical training for a variety of open laryngotracheal procedures. This is particularly relevant given the recent emphasis on surgical sim.lation and the relative rarity of som. of these pro-cedures in residency training.

A m.thod based on regression m.deling was developed to discern the contribution of com.onent chem.cals to the toxicity of highly com.lex, environm.ntally realistic m.xtures of disinfection byproducts（DBPs）. Chem.cal disinfection of drinking water form. DBP *** of concerns about possible reproductive and developm.ntal toxicity, a whole m.xture（Wm. of DBPs produced by chlorination of a water concentrate was adm.nistered as drinking water to Sprague–Dawley（S–D） rats in a m.ltigenerational study. Age of puberty acquisition,i.e., preputial separation（PPS） and vaginal opening（VO）, was exam.ned in m.le and fem.le offspring, respectively. When com.ared to controls, a slight, but statistically significant delay in puberty acquisition was observed in fem.les but not in m.les. Wm.induced differences in the age at puberty acquisition were com.ared to those reported in S–D rats adm.nistered either a defined m.xture（Dm. of nine regulated DBPs or individual DBPs. Regression m.dels were developed using individual anim.l data on age at PPS or VO from.the Dm.study. Puberty acquisition data reported in the Wm.and individual DBP studies were then com.ared with the Dm.m.dels. The delay in puberty acquisition observed in the Wm.treated fem.le rats could not be distinguished from.delays predicted by the Dm.regression m.del, suggesting that the nine regulated DBPs in the Dm.m.ght account for m.ch of the delay observed in the Wm. This m.thod is applicable to m.xtures of other types of chem.cals and other endpoints.

Objective: To establish a refined m.del of intravenous Caerulein-induced edem.tous pancreatitis in order to study the pathogenesis and therapeutic protocols of the disesase. m.thods: Wistar rats were em.loyed. The osm.tic pre-filled with Caerulein and saline was im.lanted into a subctaneous pocket in the left iliac fossa of the anim.l. Caerulein was then infused via fem.ral vein to induce pancreatitis. Results: Pathological exam.nation revealed obvious tissue edem. of the pancreas in the rat 6 h after Caerulein infusion. The gross appearance of the pancreas exhibited edem. with a clear ’gel- like’ fluid separating the pancreatic Iobules. Interstitial edem. and m.rked vacuolization without inflam.atory infiltrations in the Caerulein-infused rats were observed with light m.croscopy. There was no rem.rkable rem.rkable changes in the pancer as of rats infused with norm.l saline. Conclusion: The advantages of using im.lantable osm.tic pum. to infuse Caerulein to rats are the facilitation of anim.l handling, unrestriction of anim.l m.vem.nt in cages and reduction in tim. lost due to accli m.tization of the rat to new housing conditions.

Recovery of functional beta cell m.ss offers a biological cure for type 1 diabetes. However, beta cell m.ss is difficult to regain once lost since the proliferation rate of beta cells after youth is very low. Angiopoietin like-protein 8 (ANGPTL8), a peptide that has a role in the regulation of lipoprotein lipase activity, was reported to increase beta cell proliferation in m.ce in 2013. Subsequent studies of hum.n ANGPTL8 for short term.(3 to 8 days) in non-diabetic m.ce showed little or no increase in beta cell proliferation. Here, we exam.ned the effect of ANGPTL8 on glucose hom.ostasis in m.dels that have not been exam.ned previously. We expressed m.use ANGPTL8 using adenovirus in 2 m.use m.dels of diabetes (streptozotocin and Non-Obese Diabetic (NOD) m.ce) over 2 weeks. Also, we tested ANGPTL8 in NOD m.ce deficient in leukocyte 12-lipoxygenase (12LO), an enzym. that contributes to insulitis and loss of beta cell function in NOD, in an effort to determ.ne whether 12LO deficiency alters the response to ANGPTL8. Adenovirus-m.diated expression of ANGPTL8 lowered blood glucose levels in streptozotocin treated m.ce without an increase in beta cell proliferation or serum.insulin concentration. While ANGPTL8 did not reverse hyperglycem.a in overtly hyperglycem.c NOD m.ce or alter glucose hom.ostasis of non-diabetic NOD m.ce, ANGPTL8 reduced blood glucose levels in 12LOKO NOD m.ce. However, the lower glucose levels in 12LOKO NOD were not associated with higher serum.insulin levels or beta cell proliferation. In sum.ary, while m.use ANGPTL8 does not increase beta cell proliferation in NOD m.ce or streptozotocin treated m.ce in agreem.nt with studies in non-diabetic m.ce, it lowers blood glucose levels in m.ltiple low-dose streptozotocin induced diabetes and 12LO deficiency indicating that host factors influence the im.act of ANGPTL8 on glucose hom.ostasis.

English Vocabulary Acquisition Through Songs in Chinese Kindergarten Students

This paper reports an em.irical study that exam.ned the widespread practice of using songs in language teaching for young learners. The study m.y represent the first m.thodologically rigorous assessm.nt of vocabulary acquisition through songs as used in language teaching. Over a seven-week period including fifteen 40-m.nute classes, three groups of students from.two private kindergartens in Beijing were taught five short English phrases of 4-8 words through each of three conditions （songs, choral repetition, control） in a within-subject repeated m.asures design. Vocabulary acquisition was m.asured by the num.er of m.aningful m.rphem.s produced by the students in a picture description task adm.nistered before and after the teaching period. Results indicated significant acquisition for item. learned through songs and choral repetition, but not for control item.. The im.lication is that songs m.y indeed contain im.ortant pedagogical value.

An infiltration characteristic m.del was developed by using the m.dified Kostiakov m.thod for the Agricultural Engineering dem.nstration field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). The constant values a, α, and b of the equation for accum.lated infiltration y = atα + b were 9.12, 0.683, and 0.145, respectively. The average value of percentage of error between the actual and calculated values by the m.del was only 0.134 and showed very good agreem.nt between the m.del and the field values of accum.lated infiltration. This m.del will be very helpful for m.king a good irrigation scheduling and best water m.nagem.nt.
