The Influence of sound Deprivation on Audiologic Outcomes after Cochlear Implantation

The cochlear implant is a prosthesis that is capable to replace listening capability among patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Many studies suggest a negative relationship among duration of sound deprivation and audiometric gain (by means of speech perception test) after cochlear implantation. We evaluated surgical and audiologic results among post-lingual deafened adults, in different times of sound deprivation, and correlated with social isolation, presence of vertigo or tinnitus, and the speech therapy yield, between pre- and post-operative stages. A retrospective study was conducted on patients with post-lingual hearing loss, aged over 18 years old who underwent cochlear implant surgery in a public hospital from 2004 to 2014. Audiological, socio-demographic questionnaire, and manifestations of vertigo and tinnitus, during pre- and post-operative stages, were compared and correlating to the different periods of sound deprivation. Two groups were studied. The group A was composed of 38 participants (14 male and 24 female) with sound deprivation of less than 10 years;and group B was composed of 17 participants (8 male and 9 female) with sound deprivation longer than 10 years. We found no differences regarding age, sex, duration of sound deprivation, mean pure-tone audiometric results (pre- and post-surgery), and speech perception tests (pre-operatively). After one year of the surgery, we observed a significant difference between both groups, with a better performance to group A. The results of speech perception test, after cochlear implantation in group B, were worse than the results obtained in group A, although these correlations are not determinant whether to perform cochlear implant surgery or not.

Like other democratic societies,Portugal has known an important reduction of gender inequalities,mainly by the action of women’s social movements and some political ***,recent(inter)national studies confirm the social borders and inequalities persistence in many contexts(work,values and symbolic regulations,institutional frames,and daily interactions).In this paper,the authors will focus their analysis on the conjugal dissolution processes and unequal distribution of power between men and *** these matters,there is an extended debate,where they propose an articulation between the concepts of gender and *** authors assume as fruitful an articulation of the Marxist model with the feminist one and,indirectly,a critical and synthetic crossing between(neo)Marxism and Weberianism,being this one also articulated with symbolic *** on official statistics,in the analysis of some interviews about the motivations for/in divorce,and in the empirical evidence from the divorce judicial processes,the authors present some preliminary results of a collective project held on some regions of Portugal named:“Gender inequalities in work and private life:from the norms to social practices”.The central hypothesis of this project is that the forms of gender inequality and domination are tributaries of macro‐economic and institutional mechanisms but they are also playing at the micro level(family,business,public and private institutions),involving both variables,namely,in a crossing of Weberian‐Marxist perspectives,the presence/absence of certain level of empowerment by social *** means that women’s position depends and/or differs in function of factors such as available resources and rewards,the place in the organizational and(re)productive sphere of the family,and the place in the interactions and in roles negotiation.

Treatment Adherence, Quality of Life and Clinical Variables in HIV/AIDs Infection

The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship between treatment adherence, quality of life and clinical variables in HIV/AIDs Infection. The empirical study was conducted at two Portuguese hospitals (Porto and Lisbon) with a sample of 295 outpatients diagnosed with HIV/AIDs attending the Infectology service and on antiretroviral medication, during a 12-month period (February 2009 to February 2010). Data were collected by voluntary fulfillment of three questionnaires: one for socio-demographic variables, one to Assess Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment-HIV and the Portuguese version of the WHOQOL-Bref to measure the quality of life (QoL). Clinical records were inspected in order to collect clinical information from the patients. The relationship between these variables was accessed by student’s t-test and ANOVA using Tukey and LsD as the post Hoc test. Regarding disease stages, the post Hoc analysis has showed that asymptomatic patients have a better level of adherence and quality of life when compared to those in more advanced stages of the disease. Undetectable viral load 500 cells/mm3 were also associated with higher QoL in all overall domains. Patients on NRTI + NNTRI regimens have higher adherence when compared to those on NRTI + PI regimens and higher QoL indexes when compared to twice daily regimens, patients on single dose per day regimens have higher adherence and higher QoL in overall domain. Patients experiencing adverse effects have lower QoL and lower adherence levels when compared to those not experiencing such events. We consider the multiplicity and the interaction of several determinants of influence in the adaptation process during the HIV/AIDs treatment. The results may have implications for the psychological intervention to improve the adherence’s level to the antiretroviral therapy.

Objective: To verify the efficacy of cochlear implantation in a patient with Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Design: Review of a medical chart from a patient with Arnold-Chiari syndrome that underwent to cochlear implant surgery. Case report: A 6 year-old female, with meningomyelocele and congenital hydrocephalus, deaf in the past 3 years, after meningitis. At that time, she used oral language with adequate speech development. Tone audiometry revealed bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. The MRI was compatible with the Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Cochlear implantation was performed on the left ear with MED-EL? Implant (model sONATATi100). Currently, the child is 12 year-old, performs speech therapy three times a week, with good hearing and language development. Conclusion: Despite the presence of Arnold-Chiari syndrome (Chiari type II) with neurological disorders and with ventriculoperitoneal shunt, patient had good hearing results after cochlear implant surgery.

Drainage Bed:A Natural system for WTP sludge Dewatering and Drying with Different Coagulant Chemicals in Tropical Countries

This study seeks to evaluate the mechanisms for dewatering sludge from Water Treatment Plants (WTP) in a natural system that uses nonwoven polyester geotextile blankets named Drainage Bed (DB). Dewatering mechanisms are divided into two stages: Drainage and Drying Phases. For the Drainage Phase, the results showed that the solids content of the Aluminum sulfate sludge reached 8.9% to 18.3% and the PACl sludge 1.8% to 6.5%, the volume reduction on this phase exceeding 50% and 74%, respectively. The final solids content, after the Drying Phase, was greater than 28%, reaching 90%. In the Drainage Phase the lower the surface Application Rate—sAR [kg/m2] is, the greater the drainage flow will be. In the Drying Phase, moisture and insolation were key factors in drying sludge. Thus, the Drying Phase in the DB takes special attention for being virtually nonexistent in dewatering technologies in a closed system (confined) without exposure to solar energy. The use of the DB as a natural system for dewatering WTP sludge in tropical countries proved to be a promising alternative, because of its efficient removal of water from sludge coupled with operational simplicity and low costs, provided there is area available.

AIM:To study the association between the incidence of gastric cancer and populational exposure to risk/protective factors through an analysis of international ***:Open-access global databases concerning the incidence of gastric cancer and its risk/protective factors were identified through an extensive search on the *** its distribution was neither normal nor symmetric,the cancer incidence of each country was categorized according to ranges of percentile *** association of each risk/protective factor with exposure was measured between the extreme ranges of the incidence of gastric cancer(under the 25th percentile and above the 75th percentile)by the use of the Mann-Whitney test,considering a significance level ***:A variable amount of data omission was observed among all of the factors under study.A weak or nonexistent correlation between the incidence of gastric cancer and the study variables was shown by a visual analysis of scatterplot *** contrast,an analysis of categorized incidence revealed that the countries with the highest human development index(HDI)values had the highest rates of obesity in males and the highest consumption of alcohol,tobacco,fruits,vegetables and meat,which were associated with higher incidences of gastric *** was no significant difference for the risk factors of obesity in females and fish ***:Higher HDI values,coupled with a higher prevalence of male obesity and a higher per capita consumption of alcohol,tobacco,fruits,vegetables and meat,are associated with a higher incidence of gastric cancer based on an analysis of populational global data.

In this paper, we combine polynomial functions, Generalized Estimating Equations, and bootstrap-based model selection to test for signatures of linear or nonlinear relationships between body surface temperature and ambient temperature in endotherms. Linearity or nonlinearity is associated with the absence or presence of cutaneous vasodilation and vasoconstriction, respectively. We obtained experimental data on body surface temperature variation from a mammalian model organism as a function of ambient temperature using infrared thermal imaging. The statistical framework of model estimation and selection successfully detected linear and nonlinear relationships between body surface temperature and ambient temperature for different body regions of the model organism. These results demonstrate that our statistical approach is instrumental to assess the complexity of thermoregulation in endotherms.

Understanding the corrosion of Mg alloys in in vitro urinary tract conditions: A step forward towards a biodegradable metallic ureteral stent

Ureteral stents play a fundamental role in modern time urology. However, following the deployment, stent-related symptoms are frequent and affect patient health and quality of life. Using biodegradable metals as ureteral stent materials have emerged as a promising strategy, mainly due to the improved radial force and slower degradation rate expected. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize different biodegradable metals in urinary tract environment to understand their propensity for future utilization as base materials for ureteral stents. The corrosion of 5 Mg alloys - AZ31, Mg-1Zn, Mg-1Y, pure Mg, and Mg-4Ag - under simulated urinary tract conditions was accessed. The corrosion layer of the different alloys presented common elements, such as Mg(OH)_(2), MgO, and phosphate-containing products, but slight variations in their chemical compositions were detected. The corrosion rate of the different metals varied, which was expected given the differences in the corrosion layers. On top of this, the findings of this study highlighted the significant differences in the samples' corrosion and corrosion layers when in stagnant and flowing conditions. With the results of this study, we concluded that Mg-1Zn and Mg-4Ag presented a higher propensity for localized corrosion, probably due to a less protective corrosion layer;Mg-4Ag corroded faster than all the other four alloys,and Mg-1Y stood out due to its distinct corrosion pattern, that showed to be more homogeneous than all the other four samples, making this one more attractive for the future studies on biodegradable metals.
