The continuous excavation of burrows by fiddler crabs generates bioturbation in the sediment,which can be estimated from burrow *** aim of the present study was to describe the burrow morphology of Uca uruguayensis and *** and its relationship with demography of resident individuals and to estimate the level of bioturbation in the sediment generated by each *** all individuals from each of the 2 species,sex was determined and the carapace width(CW;mm)*** were characterized according to burrow diameter(bD;mm),maximum burrow depth(MbD;mm)and burrow volume(bV;cm^(3)).The density of each species in the study area was also *** both species,the males were larger and occupied burrows with higher bV compared to *** between sexes in relation to the burrow characteristics might reflect sexual dimorphism within the group and are probably related to the fact that males use the burrows for *** and bV showed significant positive relationships with the size of resident *** amount of sediment removed per burrow was estimated from mean bV:10.78 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** and 12.38 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** the density and depth differences between the 2 species,the similarity in burrow volume suggests that *** and *** present the same importance in terms of the bioturbation *** morphology is highly associated with characteristics of the occupant,although extrinsic factors should also be considered,and its description can provide estimates on the bioturbation generated by Uca species in mangrove forests.

Carbon Dots-Doped Electrospun Fibers for Simultaneous Metal Ion Detection and Adsorption of Dyes

The required treatment and monitoring of contaminants in wastewater reinforces the development of low-cost adsorbents/chemosensors,introducing advantages relative to the detection/removal of toxic metals and ***,it is reported a two-step process of fabrication of fluorescent carbon dots via the hydrothermal treatment of amino acids for the following encapsulation in electrospun *** prominent anionic behavior of electrospun fibers of Eudragit L100 was explored for adsorption of cationic dyes(methylene blue and crystal violet)-with the prevailing electrostatic interaction of parts being favored by the formation of monolayers on the surface of *** the other hand,the controlled release of carbon dots(CDs)from fibers to the reactor can be explored for a second application:the nitrogen ligands from released glycine-based carbon dots can be explored to indicate the presence of metal ions in aqueous *** experiment resulted in a quenching in the fluorescence of the CDs in order of 90%in the emission of particles in the response of the presence of Fe^(3+) ions,characterizing a promising perspective for this experimental system.

objective: To examine tissue hypoxia in the retina and optic nerve head of gla ucomatous eyes by the assessment of a transcription factor, hypoxia-inducible f actor 1α(HIF-1α), which is tightly regulated by the cellular oxygen concentra tion. Methods: Using immunohistochemical analysis, the cellular localization of HIF-1αwas studied in the retina and optic nerve head of 28 human donor eyes wi th glaucoma compared with 20 control eyes from healthy donors matched for severa l characteristics. The relationship between the retinal regions that exhibited i mmunostaining for HIF-1αand functional damage was examined using visual field data. Results: There was an increase in the immunostaining for HIF-1αin the re tina and optic nerve head of glaucomatous donor eyes compared with the control e yes. In addition, the retinal location of the increased immunostaining for HIF- 1αin some of the glaucomatous eyes was closely concordant with the location of visual field defects recorded in these eyes. Conclusions: because the regions of HIF-1αinduction represent the areas of decreased oxygen delivery and hypoxic stress, information obtained from this study provides direct evidence that tissu e hypoxia is present in the retina and optic nerve head of glaucomatous eyes, an d hypoxic signaling is a likely component of the pathogenic mechanisms of glauco matous neurodegeneration. Clinical Relevance: These findings support the presenc e of tissue hypoxia in the retina and optic nerve head of glaucomatous patients.

Purpose: To compare glaucoma conversion rates in patients with ocular hypertension (oH) with and without pseudoexfoliation. Design: Cohort study, based on 32 918 screening participants. Participants and Controls: Ninety- eight patients with oH and pseudoexfoliation and 98 matched controls. Main outcome Measure: Perimetric glaucoma conversion. Methods: Apopulation- based glauco- ma screening of elderly citizens of Malm , Sweden, was conducted between 1992 and 1997 to recruit participants for the Early Manifest glaucoma Trial. Screening participants with intraocular pressure (IoP) between 24 and 32 mmHg and pseudoexfoliation were compared to controls among other screening participants without pseudoexfoliation but matched for baseline IoP, age, and gender, and the 2 groups were invited to a reexamination. Computerized visual field tests were performed to identify persons with manifest glaucoma. Visual acuity, refraction, IoP, and central corneal thickness were also measured. Results: After a mean of 8.7 years (range: 6.3- 11.4),54 of 98 patients (55.1% ) with pseudoexfoliation at the baseline examination and 27 of 98 patients (27.6% ) without pseudoexfoliation had developed glaucoma. The risk ratio was 2.0 (Ponclusion: The glaucoma conversion rate was twice as high in patients with oH and pseudoexfoliation as in control patients matched for IoP, age, and gender. Thus, pseudoexfoliation was a strong independent risk factor for glaucoma in patients with oH.
