Mapping mountain areas: learning from global, European and Norwegian perspectives

Defining the spatial extent of mountain areas has long been a challenge. In the present century, the availability of digital elevation models(DEMs) incorporated into geographic information systems(GIS) has allowed the definition of mountain areas based on topographic and other criteria. This paper presents the various delineations of mountains that have been prepared at three scales – global, regional(Europe), and national – and explores the reasons and processes leading to these delineations, and how they have been used. A detailed case study is then presented for Norway. Overall, two types of approaches to mapping mountains have been taken: first, considering mountains per se, based on elevation and/or topography; second, considering them among other categories, e.g., landforms or biogeographical, environmental or landscape zones. All attempts to map mountain areas derive essentially from the objectives of those commissioning and/or undertaking the work; a unitary definition remains unlikely.

Electrode material has been cited as one of the most important determining factors in classifying an energy storage system’s charge storage mechanism,i.e.,as battery-type or *** this paper,we show that along with the electrode material,the electrolyte also plays a role in determining the charge storage behaviour of the *** the purpose of our research,we chose multi-elemental spinal type CuMn_(2)O_(4) metal oxide nanofibers to prove the *** material is synthesized as nanofibers of diameter~120 to 150 nm in large scales by a pilot scale electrospinning set *** was then tested in three different electrolytes(1 M KOH,1 M Na_(2)SO_(4) and 1 M Li_(2)SO_(4)),two of which are neutral and the third is alkaline(KOH).The cyclic voltammograms and the galvanostatic charge-discharge of the electrode material in a three-electrode sys-tem measurement showed that it exhibit different charge storage mechanism in different electrolyte *** the neutral electrolytes,a capacitive behaviour was observed whereas a battery-type behaviour was seen for the alkaline *** leads us to conclude that the charge storage mechanism,along with the active material,also depends on the electrolyte used.

AIM: To investigate the association between autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) and systemic autoimmune diseases (SAIDs) by measurement of serum immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4). METHODS: The serum level of IgG4 was measured in 61 patients with SAIDs of different types who had not yet participated in glucocorticosteroid treatment. Patients with an elevated IgG4 level were examined by abdominal ultrasonography (US) and, in some cases, by computer tomography (CT). RESULTS: Elevated serum IgG4 levels (919 ± 996 mg/L) were detected in 17 (28%) of the 61 SAID patients. 10 patients had Sj gren's syndrome (SS) (IgG4: 590 ± 232 mg/L), 2 of them in association with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and 7 patients (IgG4: 1388 ± 985.5 mg/L) had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The IgG4 level in the SLE patients and that in patients with SS were not significantly different from that in AIP patients (783 ± 522 mg/L). Abdominal US and CT did not reveal any characteristic features of AIP among the SAID patients with an elevated IgG4 level. CONCLUSION: The serum IgG4 level may be elevated in SAIDs without the presence of AIP. The determination of serum IgG4 does not seem to be suitable for the differentiation between IgG4-related diseases and SAIDs.

Background： The aim of this study was to estimate variance components and to identify genomic regions and pathways associated with resistance to gastrointestinal parasites, particularly Haemonchus contortus, in a breed of sheep adapted to tropical climate. Phenotypes evaluations were performed to verify resistance to gastrointestinal parasites, and were divided into two categories： i） farm phenotypes, assessing body condition score（BCS）, degree of anemia assessed by the famacha chart（FAM）, fur score（FS） and feces consistency（FC）; and ii） lab phenotypes,comprising blood analyses for hematocrit（HCT）, white blood cell count（WBC）, red blood cell count（RBC）,hemoglobin（HGB）, platelets（PLT） and transformed（log10） egg per gram of feces（EPG_（log））. A total of 576 animals were genotyped with the Ovine SNP12k Bead Chip（Illumina, Inc.）, that contains 12,785 bialleleic SNP markers. The variance components were estimated using a single trait model by single step genomic BLUP ***： The overall linkage disequilibrium（LD） mean between pairs of markers measured by r2 was 0.23. The overall LD mean between markers considering windows up to 10 Mb was 0.07. The mean LD between adjacent SNPs across autosomes ranged from 0.02 to 0.10. Heritability estimates were low for EPG_（log）（0.11）, moderate for RBC（0.18）, PLT（0.17） HCT（0.20）, HGB（0.16） and WBC（0.22）, and high for FAM（0.35）. A total of 22, 21, 23, 20, 26, 25 and 23 windows for EPG_（log）for FAM, WBC, RBC, PLT, HCT and HGB traits were identified, respectively. Among the associated windows, 10 were shown to be common to HCT and HGB traits on OAR1, OAR2, OAR3, OAR5, OAR8 and ***： The traits indicating gastrointestinal parasites resistance presented an adequate genetic variability to respond to selection in Santa Inês breed, and it is expected a higher genetic gain for FAM trait when compared to the others. The control of gene expression by transcriptional regulators and other types of functional y relevant DNA transactions such as chromatin remodeling and replication underlie a vast spectrum of biological processes in al organisms. DNA transactions require the control ed interaction of proteins with DNA sequence motifs which are often located in nucleosome-depleted regions （NDRs） of the chromatin. Formaldehyde-assisted isolation of regulatory elements （FAIRE） has been established as an easy-to-implement method for the isolation of NDRs from a number of eukaryotic organisms, and it has been successful y employed for the discovery of new regulatory segments in genomic DNA from, for example, yeast, Drosophila, and humans. Until today, however, FAIRE has only rarely been employed in plant research and currently no detailed FAIRE protocol for plants has been published. Here, we provide a step-by-step FAIRE protocol for NDR discovery in Arabidopsis thaliana. We demonstrate that NDRs isolated from plant chromatin are readily amenable to quantitative polymerase chain reaction and next-generation sequencing. Only minor modification of the FAIRE protocol wil be needed to adapt it to other plants, thus facilitating the global inventory of regulatory regions across species.

鉴于当前气候变化和人类活动的影响,生物多样性的空间预测对其保护和修复至关重要。本文将不同堆叠物种分布模型(stacked species distribution models,S-SDMs)的预测结果与森林清查数据进行了比较,以评估这些S-SDMs模型能否捕获生物多样性热点地区物种丰富度的新特性和地理分布及局部群落的组成。我们选取大西洋沿岸森林151处地点的1499个树种进行SDM模型构建,并利用4种模型堆叠方法重建植物群落。这43种方法分别为二进制SDM模型(bS-SDM)、由最小凸多边形裁剪得到的二进制SDM模型(bS-SDM-CROP)、受物种丰富度观测结果约束的堆叠SDM模型(cS-SDM)以及物种出现点的最小凸多边形(MCP)。我们从物种丰富度、组成、群落预测指标以及β多样性组分(物种嵌套和物种周转)等方面将各堆叠方法与局部群落进行对比。研究结果表明,所有S-SDM模型均捕获到了一般分布格局,其中bS-SDM-CROP模型最为简约。各堆叠模型预测得到的物种组成与局部群落的实际情况存在一定的差异,其中bS-SDM、bS-SDM-CROP和MCP模型呈现出嵌套格局,而物种周转在cS-SDM模型中最为显著。这些S-SDM模型在性能、遗漏率和记账错率方面的表现各不相同,对一些脆弱、濒危和极度濒危物种给出了错误预测。尽管与森林清查数据有差别,但这些S-SDM模型均捕获了与局部群落数据的部分差异,可以表征物种的潜在分布区。本研究的结论有助于S-SDM模型在粗尺度生物多样性整合与保护规划中的应用,但在生物高度多样性地区局部尺度上可能会得出错误的预测结果。
