The local Hlder exponent for the entropy of real unimodal maps In Memory of Lei Tan

We consider the topological entropy h(θ) of real unimodal maps as a function of the kneading parameter θ(equivalently, as a function of the external angle in the Mandelbrot set). We prove that this function is locally Hlder continuous where h(θ) > 0, and more precisely for any θ which does not lie in a plateau the local Hlder exponent equals exactly, up to a factor log 2, the value of the function at that *** confirms a conjecture of Isola and Politi(1990), and extends a similar result for the dimension of invariant subsets of the circle.

Tight-binding models for ultracold atoms in optical lattices：general formulation and applications

Tight-binding models for ultracold atoms in optical lattices can be properly defined by using the concept of maximally localized Wannier functions for composite bands. The basic principles of this approach are reviewed here, along with different applications to lattice potentials with two minima per unit cell, in one and two spatial dimensions. Two independent methods for computing the tight-binding coefficients—one ab initio, based on the maximally localized Wannier functions, the other through analytic expressions in terms of the energy spectrum—are considered. In the one dimensional case, where the tight-binding coefficients can be obtained by designing a specific gauge transformation, we consider both the case of quasi resonance between the two lowest bands, and that between s and p orbitals. In the latter case, the role of the Wannier functions in the derivation of an effective Dirac equation is also reviewed. Then, we consider the case of a two dimensional honeycomb potential, with particular emphasis on the Haldane model, its phase diagram, and the breakdown of the Peierls substitution. Tunable honeycomb lattices, characterized by movable Dirac points, are also considered. Finally, general considerations for dealing with the interaction terms are presented.

Multivariate analysis to predict letrozole efficacy in improving sperm count of non-obstructive azoospermic and cryptozoospermic patients： a pilot study

We tested the hypothesis that letrozole increases sperm count in non-obstructive azoospermic or cryptozoospermic patients with a testosterone （T）/17-beta-2-oestradiol （e2） ratio 〈 10. Forty-six patients with no chromosomal aberrations were randomized into two groups： 22 received letrozole 2.5 mg per day for 6 months （Group 1：6 azoospermic＋ 16 cryptozoospermic patients）, while 24 received a placebo （Group 2：5 azoospermic＋19 cryptozoospermic patients）. The following data were collected： two semen analyses, clinical history, scrotal Duplex scans, body mass index （BMI）, Y microdeletion, karyotype and cystic fibrosis screens and follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, luteinizing hormone （LH）, e2, T and prolactin levels. Both before and after letrozole or placebo administration, the patients underwent two semen analyses and hormonal assessments. The differences were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney Utest. The relationships between sperm concentration after letrozole administration with respect to FSH, TIe2 ratio, bilateral testicle volume and BMI before letrozole administration were assessed using multivariate analysis. The side effects were assessed using the chi-square test. Group 1 had sperm concentration （medians： 400-1.290× 10^6 ml^-1; P〈0.01） and motility （medians： class A from 2% to 15%; P〈0.01）, FSH, LH and T significantly increased, while Group 2 did not. e2 levels diminished significantly in Group 1, but not in Group 2. eight patients in Group 1 demonstrated side effects, whereas no patient side effects were observed in Group 2. The sperm concentration after letrozole administration is inversely related to TIe2, FSH and BMI; a direct relationship emerged between sperm concentration and testicular volume.

Preliminary study of letrozole use for improving spermatogenesis in non-obstructive azoospermia patients with normal serum FSH

We investigated whether letrozole （2.5 mg day-1） improves sperm count in non-obstructive azoospermia （NOA） patients. Four men were included in this study, and they had folliculo-stimulating hormone and other hormone levels within the normal range and no varicoceles or chromosomal aberrations. These four patients were administered letrozole for 3 months. Sperm count, testicular volume, gonadotropin, testosterone （T） and estradiol （e2） blood levels were assessed before, during and 1 week after the suspension of treatment. All patients showed spermatozoa in their ejaculate, increased gonadotropin and T levels and lower e2 levels （P〈0.05 in all cases）, when letrozole was administered. This suggests that letrozole treatment might improve sperm count in an NOA sub-population; however, more studies, including the proper controls, are needed to confirm its efficacy.

The increasing performance of modern aeroengines led the research towards the optimization of machine components not deeply analyzed in the *** this context,the mechanisms driving the interaction process between the secondary flows evolving at the hub of low-pressure turbines with the rotor-stator cavity systems have been poorly investigated in the *** this work,an experimental and numerical analysis of the interaction between the endwall near wall flow and the leakage flow of a real cavity system is *** experimental results were carried out in the annular low-pressure axial flow turbine of the University of *** blade loading and pressure distributions into the cavity,as well as the measured total pressure loss coefficient,have been used for a proper validation of CFD *** steady and unsteady calculations were carried out through the commercial solver ***,several numerical approaches have been tested into this work:RANS,Non Linear Harmonic(NLH),and *** most promising CFD techniques have been firstly identified by comparison with experimental results and then systematically employed to extend the analysis of secondary flow-cavity flow interaction to positions and quantities not available from the *** characterizing the mean flow-cavity flow interaction process will be shown to cover a great amount of the overall stage losses and should be properly accounted for the design of future optimized cavity configurations.

The effect of humidity on the CO_2/N_2 separation performance of copolymers based on hard polyimide segments and soft polyether chains:experimental and modeling

In this work, we studied two copolymers formed by segments of a rubbery polyether（PPO or PeO） and of a glassy polyimide（BPDA-ODA or BKDA-ODA） suitable for gas separation and CO2 capture. Firstly, we assessed the absorption of water vapor in the materials, as a function of relative humidity（R.H.）, finding that the humidity uptake of the copolymers lies between that of the corresponding pure homopolymers ***, we studied the effect of humidity on CO2 and N2 permeability, as well as on CO2/N2 selectivity, up to R.H. of 75%. The permeability decreases with increasing humidity, while the ideal selectivity remains approximately constant in the entire range of water activity investigated. The humidity-induced decrease of permeability in the copolymers is much smaller than the one observed in polyimides such as Matrimid? confirming the positive effect of the polyether phase on the membrane ***, we modeled the humidity-induced decrease of gas solubility, diffusivity and, consequently, permeability, using a suitable approach that considers the free volume theory for diffusion and LF model for solubility. Such model allows estimating the extent of competition that the gases undergo with water during sorption in the membranes, as a function of the relative humidity, as well as the expected reduction of free volume by means of water molecules occupation and consequent reduction of diffusivity.

Robot-assisted trans-gastric drainage and debridement of walled-off pancreatic necrosis using the endoWrist stapler for the da Vinci Xi:A case report

BACKGROUND Walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WOPN) is a late complication of acute pancreatitis. The management of a WOPN depends on its location and on patient's symptoms. Trans-gastric drainage and debridement of WOPN represents an important surgical treatment option for selected patients. The da Vinci surgical System has been developed to allow an easy, minimally invasive and fast surgery, also in challenging abdominal procedures. We present here a case of a WOPN treated with a robotic trans-gastric drainage using the da Vinci Xi. CASe SUMMARY A 63-year-old man with an episode of acute necrotizing pancreatitis was referred to our center. Six wk after the acute episode the patient developed a walled massive fluid collection, with an extensive pancreatic necrosis, causing obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. The patient underwent a robotic transgastric drainage and debridement of the WOPN performed with the da Vinci Xi platform. Firstly, an anterior ideal gastrotomy was carried out, guided by intraoperative ultrasound (US)-scan using the TilePro? function. Then, through the gastrotomy, the best location for drainage on the posterior gastric wall was again US-guided identified. The anastomosis between the posterior gastric wall and the walled-off necrosis wall was carried out with the new endoWrist stapler with vascular cartridge. Debridement and washing of the cavity through the anastomosis were performed. Finally, the anterior gastrotomy was closed and the cholecystectomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful and a post-operative computed tomography-scan showed the collapse of the fluid collection. CONCLUSION In selected cases of WOPN the da Vinci Surgical System can be safely used as a valid surgical treatment option.
