Oxygen(O_(2))-sensing matrices are promising tools for the live monitoring of extracellular O_(2) consumption levels in long-term cell *** this study,ratiometric O_(2)-sensing membranes were prepared by electrospinning,an easy,low-cost,scalable,and robust method for fabricating ***(ε-caprolactone)and poly(dimethyl)siloxane polymers were blended with tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II)dichloride,which was used as the O_(2)-sensing probe,and rhodamine B isothiocyanate,which was used as the reference *** functionalized scaffolds were morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopy,and their physicochemical profiles were obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,thermogravimetric analysis,and water contact angle *** sensing capabilities were investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy,performing photobleaching,reversibility,and calibration curve studies toward different dissolved O_(2)(DO)*** sensing nanofibers showed a high response to changes in DO concentrations in the physiological-pathological range from 0.5%to 20%and good stability under ratiometric *** addition,the sensing systems were highly biocompatible for cell growth promoting adhesiveness and growth of three cancer cell lines,namely metastatic melanoma cell line SK-MEL2,breast cancer cell line MCF-7,and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell line Panc-1,thus recreating a suitable biological environment in *** O_(2)-sensing biomaterials can potentially measure alterations in cell metabolism caused by changes in ambient O_(2)content during drug testing/validation and tissue regeneration processes.

Are metabolic factors still important in the era of direct antiviral agents in patients with chronic hepatitis C?

Synthesis and property characterization of ternary laminar Zr_(2)SB ceramic

In this paper,Zr_(2)SB ceramic with purity of 82.95 wt%(containing 8.96 wt%ZrB_(2)and 8.09 wt%zirconium)and high relative density(99.03%)was successfully synthesized from ZrH_(2),sublimated sulfur,and boron powders by spark plasma sintering(SPS)at 1300℃.The reaction process,microstructure,and physical and mechanical properties of Zr_(2)SB ceramic were systematically *** results show that the optimum molar ratio to synthesize Zr_(2)SB is n(ZrH_(2)):n(S):n(B)=1.4:1.6:*** average grain size of Zr_(2)SB is 12.46μm in length and 5.12μm in width,and the mean grain sizes of ZrB2 and zirconium impurities are about 300 *** terms of physical properties,the measured thermal expansion coefficient(TEC)is 7.64×10^(-6) K^(-1) from room temperature to 1200℃,and the thermal capacity and thermal conductivity at room temperature are 0.39 J·g^(-1)·K^(-1)and 12.01 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1),*** room temperature electrical conductivity of Zr_(2)SB ceramic is measured to be 1.74×10^(6)Ω^(-1)·m^(-1).In terms of mechanical properties,Vickers hardness is 9.86±0.63 GPa under 200 N load,and the measured flexural strength,fracture toughness,and compressive strength are 269±12.7 MPa,3.94±0.63 MPa·m1/2,and 2166.74±291.34 MPa,respectively.

In recent years,the contamination of water by arsenic reached alarming levels in many countries of the world,attracting the interest of many researchers engaged in testing methodologies able to remove this harmful *** important aspect that must be taken into consideration is the possibility to find arsenic in different chemical forms which could require different approaches for its *** this aim,a speciation analysis appears to be crucial for better understanding the behavior of arsenic species in aqueous solutions,especially in presence of compounds with marked chelating *** can be identified as good sequestering agents and,at this purpose,this manuscript intends to investigate the interaction of As(Ⅲ)with three phosphonic acids derived from nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA)by replacements of one(N-(Phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid,NTAP),two(N,N-Bis-(phosphonomethyl)glycine,NTA2P)and three(Nitrilotri(methylphosphonic acid),NTA3P)carboxylic groups with the same number of phosphonate *** in-depth potentiometric and calorimetric investigation allowed to determine speciation models featured by simple ML,MLH i and ML(OH)species.A complete thermodynamic characterization of the systems is reported together with the definition of coordination mode by mass spectrometry *** the light of the speciation models,the possibility of using these ligands in arsenic removal techniques was assessed by determining the pL 0.5(the concentration of ligand able to remove the 50%of metal ion present in trace).All ligands show a good sequestering ability,in particular under the conditions of fresh water,following the trend NTA3P>NTA2P>NTAP.

Total pancreatectomy(TP) is a surgical procedure which includes the complete removal of the pancreatic gland, the spleen, the duodenum, the gallbladder, and the distal part of the stomach. TP represents the curative treatment of pancreatic cancer which simultaneously involves the head and the body/tail of the pancreas. Other possible indications for TP comprise multifocal parenchymal diseases, such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, multiple endocrine neoplasms, and chronic pancreatitis. Sometimes, TP is carried out in patients scheduled for pancreaticoduodenectomy(where only the head of the pancreas is removed) when a cancer located in the pancreatic head is intraoperatively found to also extend to the pancreatic body [1].

The ternary or quaternary layered compounds called MAB phases are frequently mentioned recently together with the well-known MAX ***,MAB phases are generally referred to layered transition metal borides,while MAX phases are layered transition metal carbides and nitrides with different types of crystal structure although they share the common nano-laminated structure *** order to prove that MAB phases can share the same type of crystal structure with MAX phases and extend the composition window of MAX phases from carbides and nitrides to borides,two new MAB phase compounds Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB with the Cr_(2)AlC-type MAX phase(211 phase)crystal structure were discovered by a combination of first-principles calculations and experimental verification in this ***-principles calculations predicted the stability and lattice parameters of the two new MAB phase compounds Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)*** they were successfully synthesized by using a thermal explosion method in a spark plasma sintering(SPS)*** crystal structures of Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB were determined by a combination of the X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM).The lattice parameters of Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB are a=3.64398Å,c=12.63223Åand a=3.52280Å,c=12.47804Å,*** the atomic positions are M at 4f(1/3,2/3,0.60288[Zr]or 0.59889[Hf]),Se at 2c(1/3,2/3,1/4),and B at 2a(0,0,0).And the atomic stacking sequences follow those of the Cr_(2)AlC-type MAX *** work opens up the composition window for the MAB phases and MAX phases and will trigger the interests of material scientists and physicists to explore new compounds and properties in this new family of materials.

Numerical modeling of bedload and suspended load contributions to morphological evolution of the Seine Estuary(France)

This numerical modeling study(i) assesses the influence of the sediment erosion process on the sediment dynamics and subsequent morphological changes of a mixed-sediment environment, the macrotidal Seine estuary, when non-cohesive particles are dominant within bed mixtures(non-cohesive regime), and(ii) investigates respective contributions of bedload and suspended load in these dynamics.A three dimensional(3 D) process-based morphodynamic model was set up and run under realistic forcings(including tide, waves, wind, and river discharge) during a 1-year period. Applying erosion homogeneously to bed sediment in the non-cohesive regime, i.e., average erosion parameters in the erosion law(especially the erodibility parameter, E0), leads to higher resuspension of fine sediment due to the presence of coarser fractions within mixtures, compared to the case of an independent treatment of erosion for each sediment class. This results in more pronounced horizontal sediment flux(two-fold increase for sand, +30% for mud) and erosion/deposition patterns(up to a two-fold increase in erosion over shoals, generally associated with some coarsening of bed sediment). Compared to observed bathymetric changes, more relevant erosion/deposition patterns are derived from the model when independent resuspension fluxes are considered in the non-cohesive regime. These results suggest that this kind of approach may be more relevant when local grain-size distributions become heterogeneous and multimodal for non-cohesive particles. Bedload transport appears to be a non-dominant but significant contributor to the sediment dynamics of the Seine Estuary mouth. The residual bedload flux represents, on average, between 17 and 38% of the suspended sand flux, its contribution generally increasing when bed sediment becomes coarser(can become dominant at specific locations). Single-phase Y_(4)Al_(2)O_(9)(YAM)powders were synthesized via solid-state reaction starting from nano-sized Al_(2)O_(3) and Y_(2)O_(3).Fully dense(99.5%)bulk YAM ceramics were consolidated by spark plasma sintering(SPS)at 1800℃.We demonstrated the excellent damage tolerance and good machinability of YAM *** properties are attributed to the easy slipping along the weakly bonded crystallographic planes,resulting in multiple energy dissipation mechanisms such as transgranular fracture,shear slipping and localized grain crushing.
