Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals,including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy ***,being weak in nature,metal luminescence remains poorly understood,its microscopic origin strongly debated,and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely ***,we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold ***,we present experimental evidence,supported by first-principles simulations,to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin(i.e.,radiative emission from electron/hole recombination)when exciting in the interband *** model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is ***,such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness,associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the fermi *** qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling,thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this *** study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

To the Editor:Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ECC)is an uncommon neoplasm associated with a poor prognosis[1-3].Surgical resection represents the only curative approach,since systemic treatments have scarce efficacy in achieving disease ***,only 10%-40%of patients with ECC are resectable at diagnosis[1].Ma-jor hepatectomy and portal lymphadenectomy are usually required for hilar ECC,while pancreatoduodenectomy is the standard operation for distal ECC[3-5].However,ECC may spread horizon-tally along the biliary tree,causing tumor involvement of the entire extrahepatic biliary *** these circumstances,hep-atopancreatoduodenectomy(HPD)has been proposed as a pro-cedure with curative intent[2,6,7].

The business judgment rule （B JR） is a U.S. corporate law concept that has gained international recognition. It has been moulded, particularly in the definition of the Delaware courts, to protect the managerial business discretion, in other words to protect directors＂ decisions from judicial review. Corporate social responsibility （CSR） questions the relationship between corporation with a business purpose and society. More and more attention is drawn to the various impacts of corporate decisions on society, asking for the necessity for directors to take these impacts into consideration when making business decisions. At the centre of CSR and the BJR are the fiduciary duties of the directors --the duty of diligence and the duty of care --and the question as to if the directors have breached their duties and if they have fulfilled them in a CSR compatible manner. This paper discusses how the B JR helps promoting CSR by discussing the advantages and disadvantages （real or apparenO of the B JR with respect to CSR.

We report the charge-changing cross sections(σ_(cc))of 24 p-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900A MeV,of which^(8,9)Li,^(10–12)Be,^(10,14,15)B,^(14,15,17–22)N and^(16)O on hydrogen and^(8,9)Li on carbon are for the first *** from the data set,we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both *** allows us to deduce proton radii(R_p)for the first time from the cross sections on *** identical R_p values are deduced from both target data for the neutron-rich carbon isotopes;however,the R_p from the hydrogen target is systematically smaller in the neutron-rich nitrogen *** calls for further experimental and theoretical investigations.

We have read with interest the publication that describes the available data related to the use of neuromodulation strategies for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD).Despite treatment advances,however,a substantial proportion of PTSD patients receiving psychological and/or pharmacological treatment do not reach an adequate clinical *** their paper,the authors draw attention to the current understanding of the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS)as a potential treatment for *** of the previous studies indeed applied both inhibitory(1 Hz)and excitatory(>1 Hz,up to 20 Hz)rTMS to the right and/or left dorsolateral prefrontal *** larger therapeutic effects observed when high-frequency stimulation was applied,the question of which side and frequency of stimulation is the most successful is still *** authors also reported on the after-effect of rTMS related to neuroplasticity and identified the intermittent theta burst stimulation as a technique of particular interest because of it showed the most effective improvement on PTSD ***,although numerous studies have highlighted the possible beneficial use of rTMS protocols for PTSD,the exact mechanism of action remains *** their conclusions,the authors stated that rTMS has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of PTSD ***,we believe that further research with homogeneous samples,standardized protocols,and objective outcome measures is needed to identify specific therapeutic targets and to better define significant changes when active and sham stimulation procedures are compared.

Objective:Bone metastasis is a clinically important outcome of prostate carcinoma(PC).We focused on the phenotypic and functional characterization of a particularly aggressive phenotype within the androgen-independent bone metastasis-derived PC3 cell *** cells,originated from the spontaneous conversion of a CD44-negative subpopulation,stably express the CD44 v8-10 isoform(CD44 v8-10 pos)and display stem cell-like features and a marked invasive phenotype in vitro that is lost upon CD44 v8-10 ***:flow cytometry,enzyme-linked immunoassay,immunofluorescence,and Western blot were used for phenotypic and immunologic ***-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and functional assays were used to assess ***:Analysis of epithelial–mesenchymal transition markers showed that CD44 v8-10 pos PC3 cells surprisingly display epithelial phenotype and can undergo osteomimicry,acquiring bone cell phenotypic and behavioral *** of specific si RNA evidenced the ability of CD44 v8-10 variant to confer osteomimetic features,hence the potential to form bone-specific ***,the ability of tumors to activate immunosuppressive mechanisms which counteract effective immune responses is a sign of the aggressiveness of a *** we report that CD44 v8-10 pos cells express programmed death ligand 1,a negative regulator of anticancer immunity,and secrete exceptionally high amounts of interleukin-6,favoring osteoclastogenesis and immunosuppression in bone ***,we identified a novel pathway activated by CD44 v8-10,involving tafazzin(TAZ)and likely the Wnt/TAZ axis,known to play a role in upregulating osteomimetic ***:CD44 v8-10 could represent a marker of a more aggressive bone metastatic PC population exerting a driver role in osteomimicry in bone.A novel link between TAZ and CD44 v8-10 is also shown.

Apple(Malus)and pear(Pyrus)are economically important fruit crops well known for their unique textures,f lavours,and nutritional *** genera are characterised by a distinct pattern of secondary metabolites,which directly affect not only resistance to certain diseases,but also have significant impacts on the f lavour and nutritional value of the *** identical chromosome numbers,similar genome size,and their recent divergence date,together with DNA markers have shown that apple and pear genomes are highly *** study utilized comparative genomic approaches,including simple sequence repeats,high resolution single nucleotide polymorphism melting analysis,and single nucleotide polymorphism chip analysis to identify genetic differences among hybrids of Malus and Pyrus,and f2 *** research has demonstrated and validated that these three marker types,along with metabolomics analysis are very powerful tools to detect and confirm hybridity of progeny derived from crosses between apple and pear in both cross ***,this work analysed the genus-specific metabolite patterns and the resistance to fire blight(Erwinia amylovora)in *** findings of this work will enhance and accelerate the breeding of novel tree fruit crops that benefit producers and consumers,by enabling marker assisted selection of desired traits introgressed between pear and apple.
