Aims The aim of this paper is to assess morphological and leaf stoichiometric responses of Dendrosenecio keniensis and Lobelia gregoriana to extreme environmental conditions along an elevation gradient in tropical *** In this study,we assessed the variation of the morphological traits,including plant height,leaf area,leaf thickness,leaf dry weight,specific leaf area and the leaf stoichiometry traits nitrogen,carbon and phosphorous of the two endemic species *** and *** further explored the relations of these morphological traits to soil organic carbon,soil total nitrogen,soil phosphorous,annual mean temperature,annual mean precipitation,annual total solar radiation,water vapor pressure and the topographic variables aspect,slope and hill shade along the elevation *** 10 m×10 m sampling plots were set up along the elevation gradient ranging from 3500 to 4300 *** used 1 km×1 km grid cells to rasterize our study area in ArcGIS 10.5 for easy access to data pertaining to the climate of each elevation *** performed linear regression of the morphological and leaf stoichiometric traits with elevation as explanatory *** conducted correlation analysis on the morphological and leaf stoichiometric traits with climatic,soil and topographic variables along the elevation *** Findings Dendrosenecio keniensis had wool-like pubescent leaves while *** had mucilage packed succulent and waxy cuticle leaves to avoid *** species exhibited reduced metabolic rates as shown by the low leaf phosphorous *** results also showed that changes in morphology and leaf stoichiometry were determined by a combination of climate,soil and topographic variables that change along elevation on Mount *** observed variations in the morphological and leaf stoichiometric traits of *** and ***,which grow side by side along the elevation gradient,were interpreted as adaptation to the harsh en

Spatial Distribution Pattern of Populations of Isoetes sinensis Palmer, an Endangered Quillwort in China

The distribution pattern of Isoetes sinensis populations was investigated in relation to its biological characteristics such as age structure and regeneration mode, and the microenvironment. Contagious distribution pattern was found in populations of all sizes. Under the same climatic and site conditions, the heterogeneity of mieroenvironment resulting from the different depths of water and soil erosion significantly affecred the type and scale of distribution patterns of Isoetes sinensis populations. Even at the same site, the center and the edges of the water body had different effects on the distribution pattern of the plants. As one of the co-dominants, the distribution of Isoetes sinensis in communities was affected by other dominant species, especially by the evergreen grass species. Water is the major factor determining the distribution pattern of lsoetes sinensis in various communities. The pattern of contagious distribution was observed in different size of populations of ***, however the Lloyd indices obtained for the populations of various sizes differed significantly.

rural communities in Kenya largely depend on plant resources for their *** utilization of these resources depends on the availability of plant resources and the level of knowledge of the *** conducted an ethnobotanical study in Tharaka-Nithi County in Kenya to determine the knowledge and utilization of various plant species by the local *** study was conducted in four major administrative regions from June 2018 to February 2019,involving interview schedules using semi-structured open-ended questionnaires and guided field collections with 48 informants.A total of 214 plant species distributed in 73 families and 169 genera with 616 Use reports(Urs)were *** was the highest family cited by the informants(31 species)followed by Lamiaceae and Euphorbiaceae(each with 11 species).Trees(49%)and shrubs(32%)were the top life forms of the plants frequently utilized by the local *** general plant uses reported were medicinal,food,fodder,construction,fuel,pesticidal,religious,live fencing,and making *** gilletii,Prunus africana,and Solanum incanum were found to be highly valued by the local *** utilization as food and medicinal uses against snake-bite related problems had the highest Informant Consensus Factor(ICF).Only 29(13.6%)of the species reported had their status assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN).Conservation measures,alongside awareness creation in this region,are highly recommended for the species endemic to the region,highly depended on by the community,and those threatened according to IUCN standards.

A Taxonomic Investigation of Variation Within Cissus quadrangularis L.(Vitaceae) In Kenya

Using information from literature as well as records of localities on herbarium specimen labels at the East African Herbarium Nairobi (EA), materials ofCissus quadrangularis L.,C. cactiformis Gilg. andC. quinquangularis Chiov. were collected and new localities were sought. On the basis of the nature of their stem angles, the specimens ofC. quadrangularis were sorted into two variants, A and B. Variant A has smooth stem angles while variant B has rough stem angles. The authors have proposed that variant B should be recognized as a new variety withinC. quadrangularis. Variant A is the type variety ofC. quadrangularis. A map showing the distribution of the two variants in Kenya has been prepared. The rough-edged variant was found to be absent from the low-lying semi-arid regions of northern Kenya. The variants were found occurring in distinct, separate populations but without separate geographical patterns. The results of t-test show no significant difference (p=0.05) between the means of measurements of dimensions of various organs in the two variants. The stem angles of specimens of the two variants were studied under scanning electron microscope (SEM). This showed a clear morphological difference between the two variants. The results of the investigation support the hypothesis that the variation withinC. quadrangularis represents distinct kinds that can be recognized as taxa at infra-specific level.

Quantitative Estimates of Outcrossing rates in a Natural Population of Caldesia grandis (Alismataceae)

Outcrossing rate in a natural population of Caldesia grandis was estimated by the dominant random amplified polymorphism DNA （rAPD） marker using 10 open-pollinated progeny arrays of 24 individuals. The multilocus outcrossing rate estimated based on all 25 rAPD loci was 0.872 ±0.033 and the single-locus outcrossing rate was 0.795 ±0.032. Multilocus esti- mates did not differ significantly from the single-locus estimates. The fixation index, F, in the progeny estimated from rAPD data was -0.142 ±0.000. The estimates of multilocus outcrossing rates （tm） and single-locus outcrossing rates （ts） obtained from MLDT clearly indicate that outcrossing is predominant in the open-pollinated C. grandis population. An empirical analysis suggests that 15 should be the minimum number of dominant marker loci necessary to achieve robust estimates of tm.

Climate change poses a serious long-term threat to *** effectively reduce biodiversity loss,conservationists need to have a thorough understanding of the preferred habitats of species and the variables that affect their ***,predicting the impact of climate change on speciesappropriate habitats may help mitigate the potential threats to biodiversity ***,a monocotyledonous genus of the family Velloziaceae is native to mainland Africa,Madagascar,and the Arabian *** key drivers of Xerophyta habitat distribution and preference are *** 308 species occurrence data and eight environmental variables,the MaxEnt model was used to determine the potential distribution of six Xerophyta species in Africa under past,current and future climate change *** results showed that the models had a good predictive ability(Area Under the Curve and True Skill Statistics values for all SDMs were more than 0.902),indicating high accuracy in forecasting the potential geographic distribution of Xerophyta *** main bioclimatic variables that impacted potential distributions of most Xerophyta species were mean temperature of the driest quarter(Bio9)and precipitation of the warmest quarter(Bio18).According to our models,tropical Africa has zones of moderate and high suitability for Xerophyta taxa,which is consistent with the majority of documented species *** habitat suitability of the existing range of the Xerophyta species varied based on the climate scenario,with most species experiencing a range loss greater than the range gain regardless of the climate *** projected spatiotemporal patterns of Xerophyta species help guide recommendations for conservation efforts.

以 Cissusquadrangularis L.为材料用不同的技术处理并比较其收缩程度、色彩保真程度以及茎附属物的保留情况。试验了 3种常规预处理方法及 2种针对肉质组织的处理方法 ,并进行 ANOVA(Analysis of variance)分析 ,结果显示 3种常规植物标本预处理方法明显不同 (Prence)分析方法分析得出深冷冻法对植物标本造成的损害比汽油法 (LSD=1 .70 8)和福尔马林法 (LSD=2 .0 6 5 )要小 ;汽油法和福尔马林法处理后得到的标本质量无明显差别。用 ANOVA法分析醋酸法、纵切法得到的标本及未经任何处理的标本 ,它们的效果也有明显不同 (P<0 .0 0 1 ) ,醋酸法得到的标本比纵切法 (L SD=2 .3 71 )和未经任何处理得到的标本 (LSD=2 .1 3 8)效果更好 ,而纵切法和未经任何处理得到的标本并无明显不同 (LSD=0 .2 3 3 NS)。醋酸处理法制作小型肉质植物标本其效果得到了植物标本馆工作者的肯定。

reproductive Biology and Prospects for Conservation of Caldesia parnassifolia (Alismataceae)——A Threatened Monocot in China

Caldesia parnassifolia (Bassi ex Linn.) Parl. in China has declined in number in r ecent years and is increasingly faced with the risk of extirpation arising from anthropogenic changes associated with rapid urbanization and expansion of both agriculture and infrastructure. To aid in provision of the data needed for effective conservation of the species, studies on the habitat, pollination ecology, and breeding system of C. parnassifolia were carried out on natural populations occurring in Southeastern China. Flowering in the study populations extended for more than eighty days beginning in early summer. Floral anthesis occurred in the morning hours and proceeded rapidly, lasting about 45 min. Flowers lasted ca. 8 h. Caldesia parnassifolia is self\|compatible; however autogamy resulted in lower seed set than geitonogamy and xenogamy as well as free pollination. The data on pollen/ ovule (P∶O) ratio is consistent with a partially selfing and outcrossing mating system. Interpopulational crosses yielded similar seed set to within\|population crosses. Agamospermy did not occur in the study populations. Propagation is achieved through seeds as well as through turions which commonly occur in the inflorescences. Flies (Insecta; Diptera) were the most frequent visitors to the flowers of C. parnassifolia; however bees (Insecta; Hymenoptera) composed a larger proportion of effective pollinators. The Syrphidae species Sphaerophoria indiana (Bigot) presents evidence of oligolectic foraging behavior. recommendations are made on the immediate steps necessary for conservation of Caldesia species in China.
