Depth distribution and ecological preferences of periphytic algae in Kenyir Lake,the largest tropical reservoir of Malaysia

We studied the depth distribution of periphyton,growing on inundated dead trees in Kenyir Lake,Malaysia in June *** algal floral composition and structure manifested changes down the depth gradient in terms of species richness,abundance,diversity and cell *** regression analysis,all these algal attributes were negatively correlated with the depth gradients at ppecies richness,the bacillariophytes showed dominance over the cyanophytes and chlorophytes;whereas with respect to standing crop,the cyanophytes showed dominance over the bacillariophytes and *** chlorophyll a was higher at the mid and bottom-depths than the surface-depth in both the downstream and upstream sites,which showed that vertical productivity or biomass accumulation was greater in low light *** product-moment correlation analysis showed that conductivity,turbidity,dissolved oxygen,reactive phosphate and ammonium-nitrogen were highly correlated with the algal assemblage ***,photosynthetic active radiation(pAR) showed poor correlation with the community *** observations have cast some light on the autoecological characteristics,habitat preferences and environmental responses of tropical periphytic communities.

This study aimed to assess the inhibitory activities of methanol extracts from the microalgae Ankistrodesmus convolutus,Synechococcus elongatus,and Spirulina platensis against Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) in three Burkitt's lymphoma(BL) cell lines,namely Akata,B95-8,and *** antiviral activity was assessed by quantifying the cell-free EBV DNA using real-time polymerase chain reaction(pCR) *** methanol extracts from Ankistrodesmus convolutus and Synechococcus elongatus displayed low cytotoxicity and potent effect in re-ducing cell-free EBV DNA(EC50peutic index(>28 000).After fractionation by column chromatography,the fraction from Synechococcus elongatus(SEF1) reduced the cell-free EBV DNA most effectively(EC50=2.9 μg/ml,therapeutic index>69).Upon further fractionation by high performance liquid chromatography(HpLC),the sub-fraction SEF1'a was most active in reducing the cell-free EBV DNA(EC50=1.38 μg/ml,therapeutic index>14.5).This study suggests that microalgae could be a potential source of antiviral compounds that can be used against EBV.

purpose: To establish normal values of sonographically-quantified visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in an African population and to correlate results with biomarkers. patients and Methods: 100 male and 150 female volunteers were scanned for intra-abdominal adipose tissue thickness. Other parameters obtained include BMI, WC, and blood pressure (Bp). pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to estimate the degree of relationship in VAT, BMI, WC, and blood pressure. Results: The mean VAT thickness was 25.36 ± 16.42 mm. VAT correlated positively and linearly with age (r = 0.651;p p p p p pressure. (Systolic: r = 0.524, p p patients at risk of increased blood pressure and cardiac diseases associated with obesity.

肿瘤抑制基因p53是调节多种与细胞周期、凋亡、DNA修复等有关基因表达的转录因子。p53基因在大约30%的胶质瘤中发生突变,在胶质瘤的发生和发展中起重要作用。本文主要探讨野生型p53基因过表达对脑胶质瘤细胞系U251细胞生长抑制的机制。方法:通过p53腺病毒表达载体pAdCMV-p53及空载体pAdCMV-lacZ分别感染U251细胞系,RT-pCR及Westem blot方法检测转染效率;并通过MTT检测生长抑制率、流式细胞仪检测细胞周期及TUNEL检测分析细胞凋亡等指标观察p53基因对U251细胞生长的影响。结果:moi为100时,野生型p53基因的过表达可引起U251细胞G_0、G_1期阻滞、诱导U251细胞凋亡以及引起U251细胞生长抑制。结论:p53基因可以通过细胞周期G_0、G_1期阻滞及诱导细胞凋亡抑制胶质瘤细胞系U251的生长。
