Bioerosion on Late Pleistocene Marine Mollusks:A Paleoclimatological and Paleoecological Comparison of MIS 7 and MIS 5e with Modern Beaches(Río Negro,Argentina)

The Late Pleistocene littoral ridges of southern South America,especially those of the north of Argentinean Patagonia,contain remains of mollusk shells with bioerosion traces.Eleven sites from marine isotope stages(2 from MIS 7,4 from MIS 5 e)and five sites from modern beaches from northern Río Negro Province,with 40 taxa(17 bivalves and 23 gastropods)were analyzed,in the area between west of Baliza San Matías and Las Grutas(41°S).Three ichnogenera were identified in deposits of MIS 7:Entobia,Gastrochaenolites(domichnia)and Oichnus(Praedichnia)with one ichnospecies(G.torpedo).Six ichnogenera were identified in deposits of MIS 5 e:Entobia,Meandropolydora,Pinaceocladichnus,Iramena,Caulostrepsis and Oichnus with one ichnospecies(O.simplex).Seven ichnogenera were identified from modern beaches:Entobia,Meandropolydora,Iramena,Caulostrepsis,Pinaceocladichnus,Gastrochaenolites(domichnia)and Oichnus(Praedicnia),with two ichnospecies(O.simplex and O.paraboloides).On this basis,it is inferred that Pleistocene benthic communities were constituted from cheilostome bryzoans and polychaete annelids,together with drilling bivalves,predatory gastropods and overall warm-water species of mollusks.Of these,Chama iudicai was found on Plicatula gibbosa from MIS 7 and MIS 5 e.The record of warm temperature species suggests a higher sea surface temperature(SST)than the present one and/or the influence of the warm southward Brazilian Current affecting the waters of Golfo San Matías.On the modern beaches surveyed,there is an increase in polychaete annelids,cheilostome bryzoans,temperate-cold species and drilling bivalves,as well as sandy substrate species,which together with an increase of Gastrochaenolites and Caulostrepsis,suggest a colder climate due to the greater influence of the Malvinas Current during the Holocene.

Hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease: Can we stratify at-risk populations?

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLd)is a new nomenclature recently proposed by a panel of international experts so that the entity is defined based on positive criteria and linked to pathogenesis,replacing the traditional non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd),a definition based on exclusion criteria.NAFLd/MAFLd is currently the most common form of chronic liver disease worldwide and is a growing risk factor for development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).It is estimated than 25%of the global population have NAFLd and is projected to increase in the next years.Major Scientific Societies agree that surveillance for HCC should be indicated in patients with NAFLd/MAFLd and cirrhosis but differ in non-cirrhotic patients(including those with advanced fibrosis).Several studies have shown that the annual incidence rate of HCC in NAFLd-cirrhosis is greater than 1%,thus surveillance for HCC is costeffective.Risk factors that increase HCC incidence in these patients are male gender,older age,presence of diabetes and any degree of alcohol consumption.In non-cirrhotic patients,the incidence of HCC is much lower and variable,being a great challenge to stratify the risk of HCC in this group.Furthermore,large epidemiological studies based on the general population have shown that diabetes and obesity significantly increase risk of HCC.Some genetic variants may also play a role modifying the HCC occurrence among patients with NAFLd.The purpose of this review is to discuss the epidemiology,clinical and genetic risk factors that may influence the risk of HCC in NAFLd/MAFLd patients and propose screening strategy to translate into better patient care.

Seminal gifts range from important material donations to items that provide little direct benefit to females.Promiscuous,female silk corn flies Euxesta eluta expel and consume male ejaculates immediately after mating.The evolution and function of this peculiar behavior are currently unknown.We performed a series of experiments aimed to:determine if females under different dietary regimes derive nutrients or water for survival and/or reproduction from ejaculate consumption,if males suffer a fitness cost from supplying females with ejaculates,and if females prefer to mate and/or are more likely to store sperm from well fed than nutritionally stressed presumably inferior males.Experiments revealed that protein deprived E.eluta females derive nutrients for ovarian development through consumption of ejaculates of protein fed males.No seminal products affecting survival appear to be transferred in the consumed ejaculate.However,ovarian development,in contrast to testes growth,occurs in detriment of longevity.Females preferred to mate with protein fed males,yet sperm retention in spermathecae was extremely rare after a single mating.This finding suggests that females could be exerting post copulatory control.A key question that remained to be addressed for the understanding of this puzzling and promiscuous mating system is what ecological factors or male traits drive females to retain sperm from one or several males in order to achieve and/or maximize fertilization potential.

It is known that nitrate inhibits ruminal methanogenesis,mainly through competition with hydrogenotrophic methanogens for available hydrogen(H2)and also through toxic effects on the methanogens.However,there is limited knowledge about its effects on the others members of ruminal microbiota and their metabolites.In this study,we investigated the effects of dietary nitrate inclusion on enteric methane(CH4)emission,temporal changes in ruminal microbiota,and fermentation in Holstein calves.Eighteen animals were maintained in individual pens for 45 d.Animals were randomly allocated to either a control(CTR)or nitrate(NIT,containing 15 g of calcium nitrate/kg dry matter)diets.Methane emissions were estimated using the sulfur hexafluoride(SF6)tracer method.Ruminal microbiota changes and ruminal fermentation were evaluated at 0,4,and 8 h post-feeding.In this study,feed dry matter intake(dMI)did not differ between dietary treatments(P>0.05).diets containing NIT reduced CH4 emissions by 27%(g/d)and yield by 21%(g/kg dMI)compared to the CTR(Pd total volatile fatty acids(VFA)concentration did not differ between dietary treatments(P>0.05)but differed with time,and post-feeding(Pd acetate were observed,whereas propionate decreased at 4 h post-feeding with the NIT diet(Pding the NIT diet reduced the populations of total bacteria,total methanogens,Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens,and the abundance of Succiniclasticum,Coprococcus,Treponema,Shuttlewortia,Succinivibrio,Sharpea,Pseudobutyrivibrio,and Selenomona(Pd Erysipelotrichaceae L7 AE11 increased(Pding nitrate reduces enteric CH4 emissions and the methanogens population,whereas it decreases the propionate concentration and the abundance of bacteria involved in the succinate and acrylate pathways.despite the altered fermentation profile and rumi

Cancer constitutes the second leading cause of death globally and is considered to have been responsible for an estimated 9.6 million fatalities in 2018.Although treatments against gastrointestinal tumors have recently advanced,those interventions can only be applied to a minority of patients at the time of diagnosis.Therefore,new therapeutic options are necessary for advanced stages of the disease.Glycosylation of antitumor agents,has been found to improve pharmacokinetic parameters,reduce side effects,and expand drug half-life in comparison with the parent compounds.In addition,glycosylation of therapeutic agents has been proven to be an effective strategy for their targeting tumor tissue,thereby reducing the doses of the glycodrugs administered to patients.This review focusses on the effect of the targeting properties of glycosylated antitumor agents on gastrointestinal tumors.

Genetic transformation systems require protocols that allow regenerating transgenic plants from transformed tissues. This study aimed to establish a protocol for indirect organogenesis in leaf explants of a Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla AEC 224 clone. during callogenesis stage, several concentrations of NAA and then NAA or 2,4-d combined with TdZ were tested in JAdS culture medium for 30 days, followed by subculture of the explants in the regeneration medium, containing 5.0 μM BA and 0.5 μM NAA for another 30 days. In these media, the explant oxidation rate was high （95 %）. Thus, in order to reduce oxidation, different ;culture media were compared： WPM, MS, JAdS and modified QL, followed by explant transfer onto regeneration medium. The highest percentage of regeneration and the lowest oxidation rate were achieved on WPM medium. Then, NAA and 2,4-d were tested in combination with TdZ and also TdZ and BA combined with NAA in WPM medium. The most efficient culture media in terms of shoot regeneration were WPM supplemented with 0.25 μM TdZ and 0.1μM NAA during 30 days for callus induction and then with 5.0 μM BA and 0.5 μM NAA for another 30 days. This protocol yielded a regeneration rate of 43 %, with a low oxidation of tissues. A rooting experiment was conducted using half strength MS medium and comparing three concentrations of IBA （2.46, 4.90 and 7.35μM）. The highest rooting percentage （35 %） was obtained on medium containing 2.46μM IBA. Once the shoots were rooted, acclimatization in a greenhouse was not challenging and plant survival reached 100 %.

Following the Projection-Gell-Mann Standard Model obtained from 5d homogeneous space-time, we extended to the definition of Strange and.charm quarks from the SU(3) fractional charged generators superposition representations, and calculated all the well-known baryon masses. The results indicate how the Orthogonality between the SU(2) × L and SU(3) × L manifolds is broken in the hadrons, such that the superposition of the time projection Po, and the conformal space projection P1 are established, the basic requirement for General Relativity and the establishment of the Riemannian curvature in the presence of mass.
