Association between people’s attitudes towards human-elephant conflict and their locational,demographic,and socio-economic characteristics in Buxa Tiger Reserve and its adjoining area,India

“Human-elephant conflict(HEC)”,the alarming issue,in present day context has attracted the attention of environmentalists and policy *** rising conflict between human beings and wild elephants is common in Buxa Tiger Reserve(BTR)and its adjoining area in West Bengal State,India,making the area ***’s attitudes towards elephant conservation activity are very crucial to get rid of HEC,because people’s proximity with wild elephants’habitat can trigger the occurrence of *** aim of this study is to conduct an in-depth investigation about the association of people’s attitudes towards HEC with their locational,demographic,and socio-economic characteristics in BTR and its adjoining area by using Pearson’s bivariate chi-square test and binary logistic regression *** is one of the constituent parts of Eastern Doors Elephant Reserve(EDER).We interviewed 500 respondents to understand their perceptions to HEC and investigated their locational,demographic,and socio-economic characteristics including location of village,gender,age,ethnicity,religion,caste,poverty level,education level,primary occupation,secondary occupation,household type,and source of *** results indicate that respondents who are living in enclave forest villages(EFVs),peripheral forest villages(PFVs),corridor village(CVs),or forest and corridor villages(FCVs),mainly males,at the age of 18–48 years old,engaged with agriculture occupation,and living in kancha and mixed houses,have more likelihood to witness ***,respondents who are illiterate or at primary education level are more likely to regard elephant as a main problematic animal around their villages and refuse to participate in elephant conservation *** the sake of a sustainable environment for both human beings and wildlife,people’s attitudes towards elephants must be friendly in a more prudent way,so that the two communities can live in harmony.

Temperature structure parameter in the vertical is estimated once by using the turbulence outer scale approximation and another by using the Obukhov similarity relationship during the formation of an elevated inversion.A comparison of the profiles drawn using both the methods is done for the pur- pose of assessing the accuracy of the similarity method when applied to levels above the surface-based *** profiles obtained by both the methods are also compared with a similar profile obtained af- ter considering a bulk shear between the ground and top of the elevated layer.

The occurrence of vibrational resonance(VR)in a dual-frequency-driven multistable system with a spatially varying mass modelling particle with position-dependent mass(PDM)and evolving in a one-dimensional symmetric periodic potential has been investigated and reported in this *** numerically compute and analyze the response amplitude,the effects of the PDM parameters(m0,a)on the potential structure,the occurrence of VR and the bifurcation of the equilibrium *** is shown that the PDM parameters,besides controlling VR,can induce unconventional resonance patterns through the variation of the potential well *** resonant states can be influenced through the cooperation of the PDM parameters and the external forcing leading the system from multiresonance state into single and double resonance *** contributions of the fixed rest mass m0 on the VR and the PDM-induced resonance are determined by threshold conditions imposed by the magnitude of the mass nonlinear strength a.

Preliminary comparison of trace metals in coastal aerosols between Qingdao and Liverpool

Aerosol samples were collected at two coastal suburban stations, Qingdao （China） in 1995-1996 and Liverpool （u.K.） in 1995, respectively. The samples were analyzed to determine the concentrations of trace metals （Cr, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, V, and Cd） as well as A1, Fe and Mn. data were examined to understand the difference of trace metals in aerosols between coastal zones downwind the developing area （near the Yellow Sea） and developed region （near the Irish Sea）. The results show that most elements at Qingdao have levels 4-5 times higher than those at Liverpool, particularly for the crust-dominated elements （e.g. Al, Fe and Mn）. Moreover, the aerosol composition at Qingdao is higher in spring than in summer, underlying the influence of westerlies and local emissions in combination, whereas seasonal change of aerosol composition is not significant at Liverpool. The enrichment factors for the crustal source elements （EFcrust） at Liverpool are much higher than those at Qingdao. The contributions from the pollutant source （Rp） for some trace metals like Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd are 〉90% at Qingdao and Liverpool, suggesting overwhelming anthropogenic contributions to these metals. The contributions from crustal source （Re） for trace metals tend to increase with higher aerosol levels and Al concentration at Qingdao, indicating a good correlation between the crust-dominated component and the air mass. At Liverpool, the Rc values for trace metals are positively correlated with Al concentrations instead of with aerosol mass, suggesting that Al in aerosols represents the crustal component even though the aerosols come from different sources.

Exploring the merits of geographical diversification of solar PV power plants for a resilient PV-dominated electricity grid in India

India is highly dependent on solar photovoltaics(PV)to harness its vast solar resource potential and combat climate ***,∼90%of the installed PV capacity in India is concentrated in the top nine states,with the remaining states lagging *** research reveals that during monsoons,heavy cloud cover and rain lead to high solar resource variability,intermittency and the risk of very low PV generation,which can result in reliability issues in future PV-dominated electricity *** energy storage can help in overcoming high intermittency,there are multiple challenges associated with *** novelty of this study lies in demonstrating the benefits of combining multiple PV sites in various regions to mitigate the risks of low PV generation and high *** variability of individual sites was found to be up to∼3.5 times higher than the variability of combined *** noon,prominent solar park sites like Bhadla and NP Kunta experience a decrease in power generation to values as low as∼10%of the rated PV ***,the minimum generation of the large-scale dispersed PV generation is>30%.Furthermore,the research identifies other benefits of dispersing PV generation across the country,viz.,reduction of seasonal variability by adding PV capacity in the southern region,widening of the PV generation span,more room for PV capacity addition,reduction in storage and ramping needs,utilization of hydroelectric potential of the north-east and PV potential of Ladakh,and creating opportunities for sustainable development in rural agrarian regions through agrivoltaics.

Detection of thermonuclear X-ray bursts and dips from the X-ray binary 4u 1323-62 with AstroSat/LAXPC

using data from the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter(LAXPC)on the AstroSat satellite,we observed Type-1 thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the low mass X-ray binary neutron star 4 u *** of 4 u 1323-62 that were carried out during the performance verification phase of the AstroSat satellite indicated six thermonuclear X-ray bursts in a total effective exposure of^49.5 ks for about two consecutive *** time of the detected thermonuclear bursts is in accordance with the orbital period of the source,~9400 ***,the light curve of 4 u 1323-62 revealed the presence of two *** present the results from time-resolved spectroscopy performed during all of the six X-ray bursts and also report the detection of a known low frequency quasi-periodic oscillation(LFQPO)at^1 Hz from the ***,any evidence of kilohertz QPO was not *** have shown the burst profile at different energy *** a distance of 10 kpc,we observed a mean flux of^1.8×10^-9 erg cm^2 s^-*** radius of the blackbody is found to be highly consistent with the blackbody temperature and the blackbody flux of the bursts.

A global operational land imager(GOLI)Landsat-8 daytime active fire detection algorithm is *** utilizes established contextual active fire detection approaches but takes advantage of the significant increase in fire reflectance in Landsat-8 band 7(2.20μm)relative to band 4(0.66μm).The detection thresholds are fixed and based on a statistical examination of 39 million non-burning Landsat-8 ***-temporal tests based on band 7 reflectance and relative changes in normalized difference vegetation index in the previous six months are used to reduce commissions *** probabilities of active fire detection for the GOLI and two recent Landsat-8 active fire detection algorithms are simulated to provide insights into their performance with respect to the fire size and *** algorithms are applied to 11 Landsat-8 images that encompass a range of burning conditions and *** and omission errors are assessed by visual interpretation of detected active fire locations and by examination of the Landsat-8 images and higher spatial resolution Google Earth *** GOLI algorithm has lower omission and comparable commission errors than the recent Landsat-8 active fire detection *** GOLI algorithm has demonstrable potential for global application and is suitable for implementation with other Landsat-like reflective wavelength sensors.

Factors limiting the recruitment of Quercus schottkyana,a dominant evergreen oak in SW China

Quercus schottkyana is a dominant species of oak in the Asian evergreen broad-leaved forests in southwestern China but seedlings are uncommon and recruitment is rare. Annual acorn production by Q. schottkyana is variable and the acorns are exposed to a series of mortality risks. understanding the factors that limit recruitment of the oak requires knowledge of the oak's life cycle from acorn production to germination and seedling establishment. In this study, we first tested the effects of acorn density on establishment of seedlings by placing batches of acorns at different densities throughout the study ***, we tested the effects of herbivores on seedling survival by erecting fences around both natural and transplanted seedling populations. Our results show that even though the rate of seedling establishment increases as acorn density increases(for 32-8000 acorns?m^(-2)), survival rates of seedlings in the field were generally low(0-0.6%). We show that seedling recruitment of Q. schottkyana is mainly limited to the acorn stage where 88% of the acorns died from the combined effects of desiccation and predation by weevils(Curculio) and bark beetles(Coccotrypes sp.). Herbivory results in the death of some seedlings and consequently also affects the recruitment of seedlings of Q. schottkyana.
