Use of radiation in strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae:A new technique for industrial applications

During the industrial fermentation process in the production of fuel ethanol, yeasts are subject to several stressing conditions. The survival and the permanence of strains introduced in the process correlate with the capability of these yeasts in resisting to physical and chemical stresses, as well as their recovering ability to compete with contaminating micro-organisms commonly present in this industrial process. We aim at the selection of Saccharomyces cere visiae strains having this capability and ability. In this sense, cultivations of strains with industrial interest were irradiated with gammas ray at a wide dose interval. Growing curves for the strains were analyzed by means of their relative growth, a new concept here introduced, which allows a better understanding of the growing and recovering processes following radiative stress. It was found that gamma radiation could be used as an alternative method to quantify growing capabilities of S. cerevisiae strains under stressing conditions. It was also shown that this radiological method could be utilized as an additional procedure to select best robust industrial strains. This radiological method simplifies traditional analysis of strain viability, by avoiding the great number of necessary and consecutive fermentation assays.

class III Reversion with Immediate complete Denture and Immediate Implant-Retained Overdenture: case Report

With the increased life expectancy, complete dentures have been used in the treatment of edentulism progressively. It restores stomatognathic system functions, providing improvements in chewing, aesthetics, and phonetics. The aim was to report an oral rehabilitation of a patient with severe aesthetic and functional impairment, with Angle’s class III malocclusion. The patient sought the extension project of the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Minas Gerais with aesthetic complaints. After clinical and radiographic evaluation, the proposed planning was immediate complete denture maxilla and immediate implant-retained overdenture in mandible. During clinical evaluation it was observed that the patient was Angle’s III. The rehabilitation was performed as proposed and at the end of the treatment, it was possible to revert the class III occlusal pattern to Angle’s I. The excellent maxillomandibular relationship was achieved, which ensured optimal facial aesthetics and functional condition. It was concluded that the immediate complete dentures and immediate implant-retained overdenture might be beneficial for restoring the aesthetics and function of patients with Angle’s class III malocclusion.

Global epidemiology of hepatitis c virus infection: an up-date of the distribution and circulation of hepatitis c virus genotypes

AIM To review Hepatitis c virus(HcV) prevalence and genotypes distribution *** We conducted a systematic study which represents one of the most comprehensive effort to quantify global HcV epidemiology,using the best available published data between 2000 and 2015 from 138 countries(about 90% of the global population),grouped in 20 geographical areas(with the exclusion of Oceania),as defined by the Global Burden of Diseases project(GBD). countries for which we were unable to obtain HcV genotype prevalence data were excluded from calculations of regional proportions,although their populations were included in the total population size of each region when generating regional genotype prevalence *** Total global HcV prevalence is estimated at 2.5%(177.5 million of HcV infected adults),ranging from 2.9% in Africa and 1.3% in Americas,with a global viraemic rate of 67%(118.9 million of HcV RNA positive cases),varying from 64.4% in Asia to 74.8% in Australasia. HcV genotype 1 is the most prevalent worldwide(49.1%),followed by genotype 3(17.9%),4(16.8%) and 2(11.0%). Genotypes 5 and 6 are responsible for the remaining common worldwide,the largest proportion of genotypes 4 and 5 is in lower-income countries. Although HcV genotypes 1 and 3 infections are the most prevalent globally(67.0% if considered together),other genotypes are found more commonly in lowerincome countries where still account for a significant proportion of HcV *** A more precise knowledge of HcV genotype distribution will be helpful to best inform national healthcare models to improve access to new treatments.

Nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S), being essential macronutrients, have important roles in microalgae metabolism. Effects of N- or S-shortage were investigated in the green microalgae chlorella sorokiniana subjected to 24 h of starvation, by measuring the glutamine synthetase (GS) and O-ace- tylserine(thiol)lyase (OASTL) activities, proteins and amino acids levels. To test possible metabolic impact related to carbon (c) metabolism in response to N- or S-deprivation, starch and total c, N and S contents were also determined. The growth of c. sorokiniana cells was affected by N or S availability. The algae cultured for 24 h in a medium deprived of nitrogen or sulphur showed a decrease in the growth rate and changes in the average volume cell. Nitrogen starvation affected proteins level in the algae cells more than S-deprivation did. The decline in the protein levels observed under S-deficient conditions was coupled with the accumulation of the amide glutamine and with OASTL activity increase;additionally, N-deficiency promoted a decrease in cysteine (cys) levels (50%) and an increase in GS activity. Nevertheless, S-deprivation had negligible effects on GS activity, while N-deprivation significantly affected OASTL activity. Total c was also estimated in cells N- or S-deprived;nitrogen deprivation strongly affected total c content more than S-deprivation, which in addition reduced the content of c and N, but leaves intact their ratios. Our results support the hypothesis that in chlorella sorokiniana cells a reciprocal influence of N, S and c assimilation occurs.

Damsin (1) is a natural pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene that inhibits NF-κB, a protein complex that controls the transcription of DNA in mammalian cells, and has a potential for standing model for the development of new anti-cancer lead structures. In order to do a preliminary structure-activity study and improve the anti-cancer activity, fourteen derivatives and analogs were prepared and evaluated. These were chosen to represent both structural diversity and structural novelty. The importance of α methylene-γ-lactone moiety for the anti-cancer activity was confirmed, even though other features in the scaffold were shown to be important for the activity. In some cases a new substitution negatively affected the initial activity, however, two analogues, indolo [3,2-c]-4-desoxydamsin (5) and ambrosin (6), were found to be more potent.

Situations of Domestic Violence against children and Adolescents in a Northeastern Brazilian capital

Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of children and adolescents who are victims of domestic violence. Method: This is a cross sectional and descriptive study, following a quantitative approach, conducted from September to December 2013, at the SOS cHILD service, in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The research protocol was approved by cEP/UFRN under cAAE 0166.***.051.000-11. Results: In the analysis of 69 children, the results were presented from three points of view: 1) the victim—female (56.5%), aged one to 11 years old (66.7%) and lived with one of the parents (43.5%);2) the abuser—female (60.9%) in the 14 - 23 years old and 34 - 43 years old, with the same percentage (24.6%), history of alcohol use and abuse (42.0%), the mother was the one who attacked the most (34.7%);3) types of violence, among the physical ones, the most frequent were slaps (43.2%) and punches (18.9%);the prevalence, among the psychological violence, were curses (35.4%) and abuse (27.8%);negligence, omission of care (73.5%), deprivation of care for personal appearance (18.4%);among sexual violence: sexual caresses (57.1%) and forced sex (42.9%). conclusion: children and adolescents placed in an unfavorable social-economic context, under the care of mothers with a history of use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs, are more vulnerable to intra-domiciliary violence.

Background and Aims:The prevalence of chronic liver dis-ease in adults exceeds 30%in some countries and there is significant interest in developing tests and treatments to help control disease progression and reduce healthcare *** is a rich sampling matrix that offers non-invasive so-lutions suitable for early-stage detection and disease *** previously investigated targeted analysis of a single biomarker,here we investigated a multiparametric approach to breath testing that would provide more robust and reliable results for clinical ***:To identify can-didate biomarkers we compared 46 breath samples from cir-rhosis patients and 42 from *** and analysis used Breath Biopsy OMNI™,maximizing signal and contrast to background to provide high confidence biomarker detec-tion based upon gas chromatography mass spectrometry(Gc-MS).Blank samples were also analyzed to provide de-tailed information on background volatile organic compounds(VOcs)***:A set of 29 breath VOcs differed significantly between cirrhosis and controls.A classification model based on these VOcs had an area under the curve(AUc)of 0.95±0.04 in cross-validated test *** seven best performing VOcs were sufficient to maximize classifica-tion performance.A subset of 11 VOcs was correlated with blood metrics of liver function(bilirubin,albumin,prothrom-bin time)and separated patients by cirrhosis severity using principal component ***:A set of seven VOcs consisting of previously reported and novel candidates show promise as a panel for liver disease detection and mon-itoring,showing correlation to disease severity and serum biomarkers at late stage.

Background:With more than two billion people infected worldwide,soil-transmitted helminths(STH)are the most widespread *** date,STH control efforts rely predominantly on recurrent mass drug administration(MDA),which does not prevent *** public health measures including novel health educational tools are required for more sustained integrated control of *** describe the development of an educational cartoon video(The Magic Glasses)targeting STH infections in chinese schoolchildren and its pilot testing in *** applied an extensive community-based mixed methods approach involving input from the target group of 9–10 year old schoolchildren and key informants,such as teachers,doctors and parents,in order to identify potential STH infection risks in the study area and to formulate key messages for the *** development of the educational cartoon included three major steps:formative research,production,and pilot testing and ***:We found that most adults and approximately 50%of the schoolchildren were aware of roundworm(Ascaris)infection,but knowledge of transmission,prevention and treatment of STH was *** in the study area showed that unhygienic food practices,such as eating raw and unwashed fruit or playing in vegetable gardens previously fertilised with human faeces,posed major STH infection ***:It was crucial to assess the intellectual,emotional,social and cultural background of the target population prior to video production in order to integrate the key messages of the cartoon into everyday ***,our strategy for the development of the cartoon and its incorporation into a health education package proved successful,and we provide a summary of recommendations for the development of future educational videos based on our experiences in china.

cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (c-VEMPs) Assessment in Workers with Occupational Acoustic Trauma

It’s well known the noise effect relates to the hearing function while there are a very few studies connected to the vestibular disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate c-VEMPs responses in workers with noise induced hearing loss and exposed to noise in order to prove the possibility of damage in the vestibular via. We examined 60 workers with noise induced hearing loss and 30 office employees. The results highlight an increased latency and a shorter amplitude in workers exposed to noise. We found normal values in the control group. Therefore our data show vestibular damages in workers exposed to noise, thus proving that c-VEMPs represent a simple and not invasive method to identify a possible vestibular dysfunction.
