Aqueous electrochemical delithiation of cathode materials as a strategy to selectively recover lithium from waste lithium-ion batteries

Lithium recovery from end-of-life Li-ion batteries(LIBs)through pyro-and hydrometallurgical recycling processes involves several refining stages,with high consumption of reagents and energy.A competitive technological alternative is the electrochemical oxidation of the cathode materials,whereby lithium can be deintercalated and transferred to an electrolyte solution without the aid of chemical extracting *** article investigates the potential to selectively recover Li from LIB cathode materials by direct electrochemical extraction in aqueous *** process allowed to recovering up to 98%of Li from high-purity commercial cathode materials(LiMn_(2)O_(4),LiCoO_(2),and Li Ni_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)Co_(1/3)O_(2))with a faradaic efficiency of 98%and negligible co-extraction of Co,Ni,and *** process was then applied to recover Li from the real waste LIBs black mass obtained by the physical treatment of electric vehicle battery *** black mass contained graphite,conductive carbon,and metal impurities from current collectors and steel cases,which significantly influenced the evolution and performances of Li electrochemical ***,due to concomitant oxidation of impurities,lithium extraction yields and faradaic efficiencies were lower than those obtained with high-purity cathode *** oxidation was found to occur within the voltage range investigated,but it could not quantitatively explain the reduced Li extraction *** fact,a detailed investigation revealed that above 1.3 v ***/Ag Cl,conductive carbon can be oxidized,contributing to the decreased Li *** on the reported experimental results,guidelines were provided that quantitatively enable the extraction of Li from the black mass,while preventing the simultaneous oxidation of impurities and,consequently,reducing the energy consumption of the proposed Li recovery method.

Alternative stable states in mountain forest ecosystems： the case of European larch(Larix decidua) forests in the western Alps

European larch(Larix decidua) forests of the western Alps form extensivecultural landscapes whose resilience to global changes is currently unknown. Resilience describes the capacity of ecological systems to maintain the same state, i.e., the same function, processes, structure, and composition despite disturbances, environmental changes and internal fluctuations. Our aim is to explore the resilience of larch forests to changes in climate and land use in the western Italian *** do so, we examined whether larch forests can be described as an alternative stable state in mountain forest ecosystems. We used tree basal area data obtained from field forest inventories in combination with topography, forest structure, land use, and climate information. We applied three different probabilistic methods: frequency distributions, logistic regressions, and potential analyses to infer the resilience of larch forests relative to that of other forest *** found patters indicative of alternative stable states: bimodality in the frequency distribution of the percent of larch basal area, and the presence of an unstable state, i.e., mixed larch forests, in the potential analyses. We also found:(1) high frequency ofpurelarchforestsathighelevation,(2)the probability of pure larch forests increased mostly with elevation, and(3) pure larch forests were a stable state in the upper montane and subalpine *** study shows that the resilience of larch forests may increase with elevation, most likely due to the altitudinal effect on climate. Under the same climate conditions, land use seems to be the main factor governing the dominance of larch forests. Coronary artery anomalies:prevalence and clinical profile in elderly patients

Pancreatic head excavation for tissue diagnosis may reduce unnecessary pancreaticoduode- nectomies in the setting of chronic pancreatitis

BACKGROUND： The necessity to obtain a tissue diagnosis of cancer prior to pancreatic surgery still remains an open debate. In fact, a non-negligible percentage of patients under- going pancreaticoduodenectomy （PD） for suspected cancer has a benign lesion at final histology. We describe an approach for patients with diagnostic uncertainty between cancer and chronic pancreatitis, with the aim of minimizing the incidence of PD for suspicious malignancy finally diagnosed as benign disease. METHODS： Eighty-eight patients （85.4%） with a clinicoradio- logical picture highly suggestive for malignancy received for- mal PD （group 1）. Fifteen patients （14.6%） in whom preopera- tive diagnosis was uncertain between pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis underwent pancreatic head excavation （PHEX） for intraoperative tissue diagnosis （group 2）： those diagnosed as having cancer received PD, whereas those with chronic pancreatitis received pancreaticojejunostomy （P]）. RESULTS： No patient received PD for benign disease. All pa- tients in group I had adenocarcinoma on final histology. Eight patients of group 2 （53.3%） received PD after intraoperative diagnosis of cancer, whereas 7 （46.7%） received PJ because no malignancy was found at introperative frozen sections. No signs of cancer were encountered in patients receiving PHEX and PJ after a median follow-up of 42 months. Overall survival did not differ between patients receiving PD for cancer in the group 1 and those receiving PD for cancer after PHEX in the group 2 （P=0.509）. CONCLUSION： Although the described technique has been used in a very selected group of patients, our results suggest that PHEX for tissue diagnosis may reduce rates of unnecessary PD, when the preoperative diagnosis is uncertain between cancer and chronic pancreatitis.

Within the framework of the circular economy,the waste litchi’s skins were upgraded and transformed into electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).The waste litchi’s skins were pyrolyzed,activated,and then used as carbon support for fabricating metal–nitrogen–carbons(M–N–Cs)which belong to a promising class of platinum group metal-free *** activated char was functionalized with transition metal(Fe,Ni,and Co)-phthalocyanine(Pc)in monometallic and bimetallic fashion by subjecting it to a thermal treatment at 600 and 900◦*** samples functionalized at 900℃ showed higher performance for HER due to the formation of metal nanoparticles,whereas the samples functionalized at 600℃ showed higher performance for ***,sample Ni–Co 900 had an overpotential of−0.38 v for HER,while the sample Fe 600 was the most active electrocatalyst for ORR by demonstrating the onset potential of∼0.9 v(a half-wave potential of∼0.81 v)with the least production of unwanted peroxide anion.
