Enhanced consolidation efficacy and durability of highly porous calcareous building stones enabled by nanosilica-based treatments

Outdoor building stones are suffering from serious *** restore internal cohesion and to alleviate the disintegration of decayed stones,consolidation treatment is necessary and *** to date,no fully satisfactory consolidation agent and its application methodology are available,mainly due to the limited penetration depth of consolidants,low compatibility,or poor durability in environmental ***,in this study,aiming to design an effective and enduring method for the consolidation of highly porous calcareous stones,nanosilica-based consolidation treatments were tested and compared with traditional compounds(tetraethoxysilane,alkylalkoxysilane,barium hydroxide).In order to evaluate their performance and compatibility,a series of standard tests,including the Drilling Resistance Measurement System(DRMS)test,surface color measurement,vapor diffusivity measurement,and peeling test,were carried ***,the penetration depth and distribution profiles of consolidants were estimated by exploiting elemental raster scanning of SEM-EDS analysis performed throughout the thickness of *** importantly,by employing a climatic chamber,the artificial ageing test was also conducted by simulating harsh atmospheric *** accelerated ageing,the performance of all consolidants was assessed *** demonstrated that the application of nanosilica(<10 nm in dimension)by cellulose poultice,followed by adding tetraethoxysilane with the classical method“wet on wet”,is the best consolidation approach,in terms of in-depth consolidation efficacy,compatibility with the stone substrate,surface cohesion strength and performance durability in environmental ***,the treated surface is not hydrophobic,which allows further grouting and adhesion operations usually required for the restoration of historic buildings.

Large eddy simulation of cloud cavitation and wake vortex cavitation around a trailing-truncated hydrofoil

The cavitation has received considerable attention for decades because of its negative influence on the performance and the safety of the hydraulic *** this study,a large eddy simulation is carried out to numerically investigate the unsteady cavitating flow around a trailing-truncated NACA 0009 hydrofoil for determining the underlying physical *** types of cavitation morphologies are identified:The large-scale bubble cluster and the von Kármán vortex cavity,named as the cloud cavitation and the wake vortex cavitation,*** is shown that the velocity profiles obtained over the hydrofoil suction surface are in good agreement with the experimental data,indicating the accuracy of the current *** dynamic evolution of the sheet/cloud cavity is also well reproduced,covering the sheet cavity breakup,the sheet/cloud transformation,and the collapse of the cloudy bubble *** wake-vortex cavitation is caused by the blunt geometry at the hydrofoil trailing edge,where pairs of vortex cavities are *** the cloud and vortex cavities significantly affect the lift oscillation,which makes it difficult to decompose the *** fundamental shedding mechanisms of the wake vortex cavitation are discussed based on the finite-time Lyapunov exponent ***,the suction-side bubble grows and squeezes the giant pressure bubble away from the trailing *** the pressure bubble detaches,a new counterclockwise vortex or a new bubble appears at the pressure side,thus lifting the ridge towards the suction trailing edge and generating a strong vortex eye that pinches off the trailing portion of the suction-side bubble.

Tako-tsubo cardiomyopaty after femur fracture

We present the case of an 86-year-old woman referred to us from Orthopaedics Division after surgical treatment for femur fracture without personal or family history of ischemic cardiopathy. During hospitalization the patient had stomach-ache and the electrocardiogram demonstrated ST-segment elevation in anterior leads. The coronarography showed haziness, but no critical stenosis;ventricolography revealed apical ballooning of the left ventricle with severe systolic dysfunction. She was treated with dopamine in renal dose, beta-blockers and warfarin. When she was in fairly good condition, she started physiotherapy for endoprosthesis for the femur fracture. Clinicians should consider takotsubo cardiomyopathy in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with chest pain, especially in women with a recent history of physical stress.

Nannochloropsis is rapidly emerging as a model organism for the study of biofuel production in ***, we report a high-quality genomic assembly of Nannochloropsis gaditana, consisting of large contigs, up to 500 kbplong, and scaffolds that in most cases span the entire length of the chromosomes. We identified 10646 complete genesand characterized possible alternative transcripts. The annotation of the predicted genes and the analysis of cellular pro-cesses revealed traits relevant for the genetic improvement of this organism such as genes involved in DNA recombina-tion, RNA silencing, and cell wall synthesis. We also analyzed the modification of the transcriptional profile in nitrogendeficiencyma condition known to stimulate lipid accumulation. While the content of lipids increased, we did not detectmajor changes in expression of the genes involved in their biosynthesis. At the same time, we observed a very signifi-cant down-regulation of mitochondrial gene expression, suggesting that part of the AcetyI-CoA and NAD（P）H, normallyoxidized through the mitochondrial respiration, would be made available for fatty acids synthesis, increasing the fluxthrough the lipid biosynthetic pathway. Suspended sediment transport analysis in two Italian instrumented catchments

Suspended sediment transport in streams is an effective indicator of soil erosion at the watershed scale. This process was studied using the data obtained from two continuous monitoring stations installed in Italian watersheds, the Rio Cordon and Torrente CarapeUe. The catchments have substantially different climatic, morphological and land use characteristics. The Rio Cordon, a small Alpine watershed, has been monitored since 1986, while in the Torrente Carapelle, a medium-size Mediterranean watershed, the monitoring station has provided data since 2007. Several flood events with suspended sediment transport were isolated in the two catchments, excluding those determined by snowmelt in the Rio Cordon as this process does not affect the Carapelle watershed. Analysis of the events showed different behavior in terms of hysteresis loop trends between water discharge （m3 S-1） and suspended sediment concentration （g 1-1） values, as the Rio Cordon confirms clockwise relationships most frequently, while counter-clockwise trends represent the majority of cases for the Carapelle Torrent. The different behavior of the two watersheds was further analyzed by evaluating relationships between the main hydrological parameters related to suspended sediment transport. Runoff controls the total sediment budget in both catchments. In contrast, it was noted that the runoff process does not interfere in the magnitude of the suspended sediment transport in the Rio Cordon catchment, while variations due to the larger size of the catchment area characterize the events in the Carapelle watershed. Lastly, a flow peak threshold that determines the advance or delay of the hydrograph peak with respect to the sedigraph peak was established for the Carapelle Torrent, while it was not reported in the Rio Cordon.

Objective: To evaluate transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) with Echolaser® (Echolaser® TPLA, Elesta S.p.A., Calenzano, Italy) as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) using the Delphi consensus ***: Italian and international experts on BPH and PCa participated in a collaborative consensus project. During two rounds, they expressed their opinions on Echolaser® TPLA for the treatment of BPH and PCa answering online questionnaires on indications, methodology, and potential complications of this technology. Level of agreement or disagreement to reach consensus was set at 75%. If the consensus was not achieved, questions were modified after each round. A final round was performed during an online meeting, in which results were discussed and ***: Thirty-two out of forty invited experts participated and consensus was reached on all topics. Agreement was achieved on recommending Echolaser® TPLA as a treatment of BPH in patients with ample range of prostate volume, from 80 mL (80%), comorbidities (100%), antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment (96%), indwelling catheter (77%), and strong will of preserving ejaculatory function (100%). Majority of respondents agreed that Echolaser® TPLA is a potential option for the treatment of localized PCa (78%) and recommended it for low-risk PCa (90%). During the final round, experts concluded that it can be used for intermediate-risk PCa and it should be proposed as an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy for patients with strong will of avoiding urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Almost all participants agreed that the transperineal approach of this organ-sparing technique is safer than transrectal and transurethral approaches typical of other techniques (97% of agreement among experts). We detail some of the understudied aspects of the flow inside and around the Hexactinellid Sponge Euplectella *** leveraging the flexibility of the Lattice Boltzmann Method,High Performance Computing simulations are performed to dissect the complex conditions corresponding to the actual environment at the bottom of the ocean,at depths between 100 and 1,000 *** large-scale simulations unveil potential clues on the evolutionary adaptations of these deep-sea sponges in response to the surrounding fluid flow,and they open the path to future investigations at the interface between physics,engineering and biology.
