seasonal effect on rooting behaviour of important bamboo species byculm cuttings

We investigated the influence of season on the rooting be- haviour of eight important bamboo species viz., Bambusa balcooa, B. bambos, B. nutans, B. tuMa, B. vulgaris, dendrocalamus giganteus, d. hamiltonii and d. strictus. We collected 2-3 node culm cuttings in three growing seasons viz. spring （March）, summer （June） and rainy （August） from superior candidate plus clumps （CPCs） centralized in the germplasm garden. Cuttings were placed horizontally in sand and were provided with intermittent misting at regular intervals. Bamboo species exhibited differential rhizogenesis behavior in different seasons. The study reveals significant variation in sprouting and rooting behaviour in different bamboo species. B. bambos had maximum rooting （78.89%）, followed by B. vulgaris （74.44%）. In general, the potential of different bamboo species for rooting was found to be in the order： B. bambos 〉 B. vulgaris 〉 B. balcooa 〉 d. hamiltonii 〉 B. tulda 〉 d. strictus 〉 d. giganteus 〉B. nutans. The maximum rooting was recorded in spring （56.67%）, which was closely followed by summer （54.58%）. In winter season, minimum rooting （36.67%） was observed. The interaction effect of species x season was also significant on sprouting and rooting pa- rameters. In B. balcooa, B. nutans, B. vulgaris, d. hamiltonii and d. strictus, cuttings collected in summer season showed maximum sprouting and rooting, whereas, B. bambos, B. tulda and d. giganteus had maximum rooting in spring. The maximum number of roots developed per cutting was observed in B. tulda （43.8） during spring season.

Measurements of litter production, and the surface litter pool were made over a 1 year period in a tropical transitional forest near sinop, Mato Grosso Brazil with the aim of quantifying the seasonal variation of nitrogen and phosphorus in the litter and the annual contribution of nutrients to the soil. Average annual litterfall （＋95% confidence interval （CI）） was 8.20 ***^-1 year^-1 and forest floor litter mass was 58.63 ton＇hal. Nitrogen and phosphorus in the forest floor litter mass was highest during the dry and dry-wet season, being 38% higher than in the wet and wet-dry season. seasonal variation in the litter and concentration of nutrients was explained by seasonal variations in the climate, for example in the precipition and soil humidity. Average annual nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the forest floor mass were 17.24 ***^-1 and 16.46 ***^-1, respectively. The more significant forest floor mass fraction for returning soil nutrients was the leaves. The concentration of nutrients was higher in the soil superficial layer （at depths between 0-5 cm） than at depths between 30-70 cm, approximately 83% and 93% for total nitrogen and available phosphorus, respectively.

Root colonization by mycorrhizal INIFAP<sup>MR</sup>in barley seed treated with fungicide

The effect of barley seed treated with chlorothalonil fungicide on mycorrhizal root colonization was evaluated. The treatments were: 1) seed with Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, one, two and three doses, and uninoculated seed;2) seed with and without fungicide. Monthly seed plantings were performed with different storage time, looking forward to assessing the colonization degree of the roots. As revealed by the results, the seed treated with chlorothalonil did not lower the root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?;the chlorothalonil treatment had a 32.63% average root colonization, whereas without chlorothalonil, it was 36.46%. When the seed was treated with root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, this was lower in the treatment with one dose;no significant difference was revealed by the treatments with either double or triple doses.?The colonization percentage was progressively decreased by seed storage. The root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, throughout the inoculated seed storage time, remained constant and unchanged for the first six months, but then decreased in 50% within a 10-month period for both treated and not treated fungicide seed.

Comparative Evaluation of the Regular Ovitrap vs an Innovated Larvitrap for <i>Aedes</i>Entomological surveillance in Tapachula

Objective: The objective is to compare a regular ovitrap versus an innovated larvitrap for monitoring Aedes spp. populations. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 regular ovitraps and 20 innovated larvitraps were placed in pairs in 20 houses from the 5 de Febrero neighborhood in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico. The innovation consisted in the incorporation of a valve in the lower part of a half tire to drain the contents in a 2 L collection container. The evaluation was carried out during five weeks, collecting eggs and larvae from the ovitraps and innovated larvitraps, respectively. Positivity indexes and insectary production of adult Aedes spp. mosquitoes were compared by collection type. Results: Average positivity index for the five weeks period were 60% for ovitraps and 91.25% for innovated larvitraps. During the five weeks, 4043 Ae. aegypti and 703 Ae. albopictus adult mosquitoes were produced in the insectary from the eggs collected from ovitraps, while from innovated larvitraps were 9014 Ae. aegypti, 1205 Ae. albopictus, and 15 Culex spp. Conclusion: Collection by the innovated larvitrap was more efficient, collecting 3.56 times more Ae. aegypti than with ovitraps, using approximately the same effort in time for replacing the filter paper from traditional 1 L ovitraps. since the logistics for the storage and placement of larvitraps may still be a disadvantage in comparison with ovitraps, their use could be specifically intended in sentinel sites for mosquito population monitoring for entomological surveillance purposes.

This paper evaluates the skills of physical Parameterization schemes in simulating extreme rainfall events over dar es salaam Region, Tanzania using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The model skill is determined during the 21 december 2011 flooding event. Ten sensitivity experiments have been conducted using Cumulus, Convective and Planetary boundary layer schemes to find the best combination and optimize the WRF model for the study area for heavy rainfall events. Model simulation results were verified against observed data using standard statistical tests. The model simulations show encouraging and better statistical results with the combination of Kain-Fritsch cumulus parameterization scheme, Lin microphysics scheme and Asymmetric Convection Model 2 (ACM2) planetary boundary scheme than any other combinations of physical parameterization schemes over dar es salaam region.

Issues and Limitations of Broad Band Remote sensing of Kimberlite—A Case Example from Kimberlites of dharwar Craton, India

Present study attempts to understand the potential of multispectral AsTER (Advanced space borne thermal emission and reflection radiometer) data for spatial mapping of kimberlite. Kimberlite is an economic rock known for hosting diamond. Kimberlite also has petrogenetic importance for giving us clue on the composition of lower part of the mantle. Kimberlites often contain serpentine, carbonate minerals;which have their diagnostic spectral signatures in short wave infrared (sWIR) domain. In the present study, attempt is made to delineate kimberlite from adjacent granite-granodiorite gneiss based on processing of the AsTER data as AsTER’s spectral channels can detect some of the diagnostic absorption features of kimberlites. But it has been observed that the kimberlites are difficult to be delineated by processing the AsTER data using correlative information of both sub-pixel and per-pixel mapping. Moreover, smaller spatial size of kimberlites with respect to pixel size of AsTER sWIR channels further obscures the spectral feature of kimberlite. Therefore, an attempt is also made to understand how intra pixel spectral mixing of kimberlite and granite granodiorite-gneiss modifies the diagnostic spectral feature of kimberlite. It is observed that spectral feature of kimberlites would be obscured when it is has very small spatial size (one-tenth of pixel) with respect to pixel size. Moreover, calcrete developed in the adjacent soil has identical absorption feature similar to the spectral features of kimberlites imprinted in the respective AsTER convolved spectral profiles. This also has resulted false-positives in AsTER image when we use spectral feature as a tool for spatial mapping of kimberlite. Therefore hyperspectral data with high spatial and spectral resolution is required for targeting kimberlites instead of using broad band spectral feature of kimberlites.
