Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). however, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter th.n 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve with.n the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Layered-type metal phosphates of Banb_(2-x)Ta_(x)P_(2)O_(11)(x=0,0.5,1.0,1.5,and 2.0)were synthesized using a solid-state reaction *** photophysical,optical,and photocatalytic hydrogen production properties of the resulting powders were investigated for the first ***-pure and homogeneous powders with irregular morphologies were obtained at a calcination temperature of 1200℃.As the Ta content increased,the interlayer distance along the c-axis increased by up to 0.14%.Additionally,the optical bandgap values increased from 3.32 to 3.59 *** energy band positions were estimated from the Mott–Schottky ***_(2)P_(2)O_(11)(x=0)exhibited the lowest conduction band edge position(-0.14 V *** normal hydrogen electrode,nhE),which is located above the water reduction potential(0.0 V ***).In comparison,BaTa_(2)P_(2)O_(11)(x=2.0)exhibited the highest conduction band edge position(-0.29 V ***),comparable to that of TiO_(2).The photocatalytic activity for hydrogen produced from splitting water was measured under ultraviolet light ***,BaTa_(2)P_(2)O_(11)exhibited the highest activity(7.3μmol/h),which was 15 and 10 times larger th.n Banb_(2)P_(2)O_(11)(0.5μmol/h)and nano-TiO_(2)(0.7μmol/h),*** activity of BaTa_(2)P_(2)O_(11)increased to 24.4μmol/h after deposition of the niO_(x)co-catalyst(1 wt.%),which remained stable during continuous operation(~35 h).

An efficient and green method has been developed for the synthesis of 2h-indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazinetriones derivatives by employing 15 mol%β-cyclodextrinvia a one-pot multicomponent reaction of aldehyde,dimedone,hydrazine hydrate with succinic anhydride/phthalic anhydride in water at 80 ℃ for first *** catalyst could be recovered and reused for four consecutive cycles without appreciable loss in catalytic activity and evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial *** outcome of the screening study showed that compound 6d,6f and7 n exhibited excellent activity against ***,compound 6f and 6h exhibited excellent activity against ***,and compound 6c,and 6e displayed again excellent activity against Staphylococcus aureus whereas compound 7o shows excellent activity against *** and *** wh.n compared with Ampicillin（standard control）.The results indicated that maximum compounds are moderately effective against bacterial growth and their effectiveness is highest against standard drugs.

Effect of intermittent treatment with tamoxifen on reproduction in male rats

Aim: To identify the antifertility effect of intermittent oral administration of tamoxifen in male rat. Methods:Tamoxifen was administered orally at a dose of 0.4 mg·kg^(-1)·d^(-1) with an intermittent regime for 120 days. Treatedand control rats were mated with cycling female rats on days 60, 90 and 120 of treatment. The mated males were sacri-ficed and the weights of reproductive organs were recorded, and the serum levels of Lh, FSh, testosterone and estradi-ol estimated by radioimmunoassay. In the female rats, the numbers of implantation sites, corpora lutea, and numbersof normal and resorbed foetuses were recorded on d 21 of gestation. The potency, fecundity, fertility index, litter sizeand post-implantation loss were th.n calculated. Results; The fecundity of male rats was completely suppressed bytamoxifen while the potency was maintained at the control level. The fertility index was significantly decreased. no vi-able litters were sired. Post implantation loss, indicative of non-viable embryos, was observed but was not significantlyincreased above the control level. The weights of the testes, epididymides, ventral prostate and seminal vesicles weresignificantly reduced. The blood Lh and testosterone levels were significantly decreased, but not FSh and ***; Intermittent oral tamoxifen administration completely suppressed the fecundity of adult male rats withreserved potency.

A new way of designing and preparing silicon nitride ceramic composite with high fracture toughness and nacre structure has been proposed. To mimic the laminated structure of nacre, Si_3n_4 matrix ceramic layer can be obtained through compacting rolling method. To mimic the secondary tough.ning of nacre structure, SiC whisker is added into Si_3n_4 and acts as the secondary tough.ning phase. Boron nitride (Bn)is selected to mimic the organic layer in nacre so as to form the weak interfaces between Si_3n_4 layers. Alumina is added into Bn to adjust the bonding strength of the *** Si_3n_4 sheets are stacked into the die after coating with Bn. After the removal of the organic matter in them, the green body is hot pressed at 1820℃for 1.5 hours under n_2 atmosphere. The fracture toughness of the so-made Si_3n_4 composite at room temperature is 20.36MPa m￣(1/2), the three-point bending strength at room temperature is 651.47MPa. The crack spreads and deflects along the interface between Bn and Si_3n_4 layer and extends through the Bn layer into Si_3n_4 layer. The improvement of the fracture toughness may be due to the staircase-shape-like crack which provides the long crack path, the fracture and deformation of Si_3n_4 layer, and the pullout of SiC whiskers from the Si_3n_4 layer.

Comparative effects of composted organic waste and inorganic fertilizer on nitrate leachate from the farm soils of northern Guam

The purpose of this study was to quantify the release of nitrate into vadose zone as well as the nitrogen-holding capacity of compost applied on calcareous soils of northern Guam amended with both inorganic fertilizer and composted organic waste,to examine potentially adverse effect of these nutrient materials to groundwater *** different nitrogen levels each of the composted organic waste and the inorganic fertilizer were applied to corn(maize)(farmland)study plots for three consecutive seasons,two dry and one rainy *** each season,soil organic matter(SOM,w/w%)content and carbon-nitrogen ratio(C/n,w/w%),were determined for analysis of the nitrogen-holding capacity of these calcareous *** levels in soil pore water were also determined for study of potential groundwater *** three seasons,compost plots showed higher SOM%contents and lower C/n%th.n fertilizer *** is,compost-treated soils showed higher SOM content and adsorbed more nitrogen under normalized soil mass th.n did fertilizer-treated *** levels in pore water were generally higher on compost plots during early stages of corn but were generally higher on fertilizer plots during active leaf,tasseling,and maturity *** the rainy season,nitrate leachate seemed to increase,but this trend could not be confirmed because rainfall amounts were not ***,composted organic waste proved to be a good amendment for soil productivity and agricultural sustainability while reducing nitrate leachate from northern Guam farmland.

Enabling silicon photoanodes for efficient solar water splitting by electroless-deposited nickel

Enabling Si photoanodes for efficient solar water oxidation would facilitate the development of solar fuel conversion, but it is challenging owing to Si surface passivation via photo-induced corrosion in aqueous electrolytes. To overcome this challenge, most approaches have focused on improving the stability of Si by coating dense and th.n protective layers using high vacuum-based techniques such as atomic layer deposition. however, these procedures are costly, making scalability for practical applications difficult. herein, we report a modified electroless deposition （ELD） method to uniformly deposit protective and catalytic ni films on Si wafers, resulting in efficient and stable Si photoanodes for solar water oxidation. The optimized ni/n-Si photoanode achieves an onset potential of -1.09 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode and a saturation current density of -27.5 mA/cm^2 under AM 1.5 G illumination at ph 14. The ELD method is additionally capable of ni deposition on a 4-inch.n-Si wafer, demonstrating the first 4-inch Si photoanode. The solar water oxidation of the ELD-ni/n-Si photoanode can be further improved by surface texturing, built-in n-p junctions, or coupling with more efficient catalysts.
