Effects of crop residues for animal consumption and soil enhancement on the electricity generation potential of residues:A case study of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district,Ghana

Many studies have estimated the potential of crop residues for energy generation globally and recognized its great potential,especially in rural areas where on-grid electricity is ***,crop residues have other equally important uses as animal feed and as mulch for soil enhancement,especially in rural farming ***,most of the known studies have neglected the estimation of the quantity of crop residues that will be required for feeding animals and also for the enhancement of soil through mulching in their energy potential estimation from crop *** these two important uses can lead to the over-exploitation of the residues for energy generation at the expense of conservation agriculture practices as well as depriving animals of quality feed which can lead to low crop yield and animal production,with the ability to cause hunger and *** study has assessed the potential of electricity generation from agricultural residues in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district of Ghana using gasification technology,taking cognizance of the proportion of residues needed for animal consumption and soil *** results of the study indicate that out of the 207646.22 t of residues that can be generated from maize,yam,cassava,millet,sorghum,and groundnut,26830.36 t(representing 13%)will be required by sheep,goats,and cows for consumption,and 13936.17 t(representing 7%)will be required for mulching soils where the crops are ***,it was found that a total of 592.17 MW∙h of electricity can be generated from crop residues without animal consumption and soil enhancement needs,while 461.89 MW∙h could be generated from the residues,considering animal feed and soil *** study has indicated that it is not enough to consider soil enhancement and animal feeding in agricultural biomass power generation through recovery factors without the exact quantification of residues required for these purposes since this can lead to a vi

Pyrolysis is a rapidly expanding chemical-based recyclable method that complements physical recycling. It avoids improper disposal of post-consumer polymers and mitigates the ecological problems linked to the production of new plastic. Nevertheless, while there is a consensus that pyrolysis might be a crucial technology in the years to come, more discussions are needed to address the challenges related to scaling up, the long-term sustainability of the process, and additional variables essential to the advancement of the green economy. Herein, it emphasizes knowledge gaps and methodological issues in current Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), underlining the need for standardized techniques and updated data to support robust decision-making for adopting pyrolysis technologies in waste management strategies. For this purpose, this study reviews the LCAs of pyrolytic processes, encompassing the complete life cycle, from feedstock collection to end-product distribution, including elements such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste creation. Hence, we evaluate diverse pyrolysis processes, including slow, rapid, and catalytic pyrolysis, emphasizing their distinct efficiency and environmental footprints. Furthermore, we evaluate the impact of feedstock composition, process parameters, and scale of operation on the overall sustainability of pyrolysis-based plastic waste treatment by integrating results from current literature and identifying essential research needs. Therefore, this paper argues that existing LCA studies need more coherence and accuracy. It follows a thorough evaluation of previous research and suggests new insights into methodologies and restrictions.

Due to the rapid development of logistic industry, transportation cost is also increasing, and finding trends in transportation activities will impact positively in investment in transportation infrastructure. There is limited literature and data-driven analysis about trends in transportation mode. This thesis delves into the operational challenges of vehicle performance management within logistics clusters, a critical aspect of efficient supply chain operations. It aims to address the issues faced by logistics organizations in optimizing their vehicle fleets’ performance, essential for seamless logistics operations. The study’s core design involves the development of a predictive logistics model based on regression, focused on forecasting, and evaluating vehicle performance in logistics clusters. It encompasses a comprehensive literature review, research methodology, data sources, variables, feature engineering, and model training and evaluation and F-test analysis was done to identify and verify the relationships between attributes and the target variable. The findings highlight the model’s efficacy, with a low mean squared error (MSE) value of 3.42, indicating its accuracy in predicting performance metrics. The high R-squared (R2) score of 0.921 emphasizes its ability to capture relationships between input characteristics and performance metrics. The model’s training and testing accuracy further attest to its reliability and generalization capabilities. In interpretation, this research underscores the practical significance of the findings. The regression-based model provides a practical solution for the logistics industry, enabling informed decisions regarding resource allocation, maintenance planning, and delivery route optimization. This contributes to enhanced overall logistics performance and customer service. Population upsurge in Gwagwalada increased water demand in the area,thereby stressing water resources in the *** properties in parts of Gwagwalada in North-Central Nigeria were therefore investigated using resistivity and hydrogeological *** water level measurements of hand dug wells were used to determine the groundwater flow direction for the area which coincides with the North East-South West joint *** rate pumping test was adopted for the research and 10 boreholes were *** weathered/fractured basement range from 7.5 m to 56.7 *** transmissivity values in the area ranged from 0.35 m^(2)/d to 3.63 m^(2)/d while the hydraulic conductivity range from 0.045 m/d to 0.18 m/*** Vertical Electrical Soundings(VES)were carried out on the *** geoelectric sections revealed four to five layers and the longitudinal conductance varied from 0.11Ω^(-1)to 0.37Ω^(-1).The results of the investigation characterized the groundwater potential in the study area into low and moderate while the aquifer protective capacity into weak and moderate *** efficacy of resistivity and pumping test data in quantifying aquifer properties has been established in this *** findings of this study shed light on the properties of ground water and aquifer protective capacity in the area,hence assist in the effective future groundwater resources exploitation.

Technological advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) have revolutionized various industries,enabling the widespread adoption of UAV-based solutions. In engineering management, UAV-based inspection has emerged as a highly efficient method for identifying hidden risks in high-risk construction environments, surpassing traditional inspection techniques. Building on this foundation, this paper delves into the optimization of UAV inspection routing and scheduling, addressing the complexity introduced by factors such as no-fly zones, monitoring-interval time windows, and multiple monitoring rounds. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP)model that optimizes inspection task assignments, monitoring sequence schedules, and charging decisions. The comprehensive consideration of these factors differentiates our problem from conventional vehicle routing problem(VRP), leading to a mathematically intractable model for commercial solvers in the case of large-scale instances. To overcome this limitation, we design a tailored variable neighborhood search(VNS) metaheuristic, customizing the algorithm to efficiently solve our model. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to validate the efficacy of our proposed algorithm, demonstrating its scalability for both large-scale and real-scale instances. Sensitivity experiments and a case study based on an actual engineering project are also conducted, providing valuable insights for engineering managers to enhance inspection work efficiency.

Amniotic band syndrome is an acquired embryo-fetopathy. It is rare and is characterized by malformations mainly affecting the limbs but also the skull, face and thoraco-abdominal axis. Its etiopathogenesis remains poorly understood. Its diagnosis is essentially clinical and is classically based on the existence of signs such as furrows, amputations and pseudosyndactyly. To show the importance of antenatal diagnosis in resource-limited countries, we report the case of two newborns, one premature at 31 weeks and the other at term, in whom amniotic band syndrome was discovered incidentally at birth. It involved an amputation of the right leg for both cases. The premature baby was born in a context of neonatal sepsis and will succumb to the latter while the 2nd case was released from the hospital alive. Imaging examinations to search for probable congenital malformations could only be carried out for the 2nd case and no accessible congenital malformation had been identified. And as management of the disease, only psychological support to the parents was provided for the 2 cases. The antenatal discovery of a case of amniotic band syndrome in countries with low technical capacity such as Burundi should push clinicians to think in time about treatment options.

Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Maga-Pouss Rice Fields (Far-North Region, Cameroon) and Transfer to Rice Grains

Monitoring of heavy metals contamination of agricultural products and their transfer and bioaccumulation in crops like rice has become a hot topic worldwide over the last two decades. The present study was carried out to determine the accumulation of heavy metals in rice fields and their transfer to rice grains. Soil, irrigation water and rice grains samples were gathered in Maga-Pouss, Far-North, Cameroon. Concentrations of six heavy metals (lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, iron and mercury) were evaluated by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Mercury was not detected in this study. Average concentrations of metals were in this order (in mg/kg): Fe (188.60 ± 97.06) > Pb (63.63 ± 7.11) > Cd (2.59 ± 0.29) > Zn (1.10 ± 1.05) > Cu (0.80 ± 0.73) in water and Pb (105.50 ± 31.11) > Fe (105.50 ± 31.11) > Cu (45.93 ± 14.39) > Zn (22.52 ± 6.40) > Cd (3.15 ± 0.49) in soil. Water in Maga-Pouss rice fields appears to be more harmful than the soil, notably for lead, cadmium and copper. In rice grains, heavy metals were found in this order (mg/kg): Fe (188.01 ± 82.62) > Cu (27.20 ± 0.00) > Zn (23.61 ± 12.42) > Pb (19.50 ± 19.91) > Cd (2.02 ± 1.05). The mean bioconcentration factor (BCF) of metals from soil to rice grains was in the following order: Fe (2.60) > Zn (1.05) > Cd (0.64) > Cu (0.59) > Pb (0.18). From water to rice grains, the order is: Cu (37.26) > Zn (22.49) > Cd (6.97) > Pb (2.74) > Fe (1.94). Rice field pH and electrical conductivity favored the uptake of lead, copper and cadmium by rice grains. The findings of this study will be good documentation for risk assessment, and decision-making by environmental managers in this region.
