Employing colliding-pulse injection has been shown to enable the generation of high-quality electron beams from laser-plasma ***,by using test particle simulations,hamiltonian analysis,and multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations,we lay the theoretical framework for spin-polarized electron beam generation in the colliding-pulse injection ***,we show that this scheme enables the production of quasi-monoenergetic electron beams in excess of 80%polarization and tens of pC charge with commercial 10-TW-class laser systems.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) and their additive, dominance and epistatic effects play a critical role in complex trait variation. It is often infeasible to detect multiple interacting QTL due to main effects often being confounded by interaction effects. Positioning interacting QTL within a small region is even more difficult. We present a variance component approach nested in an empirical Bayesian method, which simultaneously takes into account additive, dominance and epistatic effects due to multiple interacting QTL. The covariance structure used in the variance component approach is based on combined linkage disequilibrium and linkage (LDL) information. In a simulation study where there are complex epistatic interactions between QTL, it is possible to simultaneously fine map interacting QTL using the proposed approach. The present method combined with LDL information can efficiently detect QTL and their dominance and epistatic effects, making it possible to simultaneously fine map main and epistatic QTL.

Plasma is gaining increasing interest for cancer treatment, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Using computer simulations at the molecular level, we try to gain better insight in how plasma-generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) can penetrate through the cell membrane. Specifically, we compare the permeability of various (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) RONS across both oxidized and nonoxidized cell membranes. We also study pore formation, and how it is hampered by higher concentrations of cholesterol in the cell membrane, and we illustrate the much higher permeability of h2O2 through aquaporin channels. Both mechanisms may explain the selective cytotoxic effect of plasma towards cancer cells. Finally, we also discuss the synergistic effect of plasma-induced oxidation and electric fields towards pore formation.

Fluid-particle systems as commonly encountered in chemical, metallurgical and petroleum industries are mostly polydisperse in nature. however, the relations used to describe fluid-particle interactions are originally derived from monodisperse systems, with ad hoc modifications to account for polydispersity. In previous work it was shown that for bidisperse systems with moderate diameter ratios of 1：2 to 1：4, this approach leads to discrepancies, and a correction factor is needed. In this work we demonstrate that this correction factor also holds for more extreme diameter ratios of 1：5, 1：7 and 1： 10, although the force on the large particles is slightly overestimated when using the correction factor. The main origin of the correction is that the void surrounding the large particles becomes less in case ofa bidisperse mixture, as compared to a monodisperse system with the same volume fraction. We further investigated this discrepancy by calculating the volume per particle by means of Voronoi tessellation.

Motivated by the recent claim of hot superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 550 K in La + x hydrides,we investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of compounds that may have formed in the experiment,using first-principles calculations for evolutionary crystal structure prediction and *** from the hypothesis that the observed T_(c) may be realized by successive heating upon a pre-formed Lah_(10) phase,we examine plausible ternaries of lanthanum,hydrogen and other elements present in the diamond anvil cell: boron,nitrogen,carbon,platinum,gallium,*** find that only boron and,to a lesser extent,gallium form metastable superhydride-like structures that can host high-T_(c) superconductivity,but the predicted T_(c)’s are incompatible with the experimental *** results indicate that,while the claims of hot superconductivity should be reconsidered,it is very likely that unknown h-rich ternary or multinary phases containing lanthanum,hydrogen,and possibly boron or gallium may have formed under the reported experimental conditions,and that these may exhibit superconducting properties comparable,or even superior,to those of currently known hydrides.

Dynamic tidal power is a new way of capturing tidal energy by building a water head using a dike perpendicular to the coast. This study explored the hydrodynamic mechanism of the water head across an intended dynamic tidal power dike system using the Delft3 D-FLOW software module. The propagating wave was simulated in a rectangular domain with a horizontal sea bottom at a 30-m depth. A significant water head was created across the dike by blocking the water. The water head increased with increasing dike length and increasing undisturbed tidal current acceleration. The maximum water head for the dike with a length of 50 km, located 900 km from the western boundary, was 2.15 m,which exceeded the undisturbed tidal range. The time series of the water head behaved in a manner identical to the undisturbed tidal current acceleration. The distribution of the water head over the dike assumed an elliptical shape. A parasitic wave was generated at the attachment and scattered outward. The phase lag across the dike did not behave as a linear function of the detour distance.

Iatrogenic preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes(iPPROM)after fetal surgery remains a strong trigger for premature *** fetal membrane defects do not heal spontaneously and amniotic fluid leakage and chorioamniotic membrane separation may occur,we developed a biocompatible,fetoscopically-applicable collagen plug with shape memory to prevent *** plug expands directly upon employment and seals fetal membranes,hence preventing amniotic fluid leakage and potentially *** typeⅠcollagen plugs were given shape memory and crimped to fit through a fetoscopic cannula(Ø3 mm).Expansion of the plug was examined in phosphate buffered saline(PBS).Its sealing capacity was studied ex vivo using human fetal membranes,and in situ in a porcine bladder *** crimped plug with shape memory expanded and tripled in diameter within 1 min when placed into PBS,whereas a crimped plug without shape memory did *** both human fetal membranes and porcine bladder,the plug expanded in the defect,secured itself and sealed the defect without membrane *** conclusion,collagen plugs with shape memory are promising as medical device for rapid sealing of fetoscopic defects in fetal membranes at the endoscopic entry point.
