Land-cover change can affect inland fisheries,which underpin food security of millions of people *** of forests from very large floodplains has been found to decrease fish catch via loss of feeding and nursery habitat for ***,it is unknown if similar effects occur in smaller rivers with limited floodplain *** is also known about the mechanisms by which land-cover changes affect inland fish ***,we assessed land-use and land-cover(LULC)effects on fish catch,diet,and condition at sites in two medium-sized rivers of Cameroon,in Central *** found that LULC explained 30%of the variation in fish catch,with the catch of five species being positively,and of two species being negatively,related to floodplain *** niche breadth of fish diets was higher in the river surrounded by forests than in the river surrounded by agricultural ***,contrary to expectations,condition of the fish,as indicated by occurrence of diseases or deformities,eroded fins,lesions or tumors,was not related to *** results support the notions that floodplain forests support fish populations in rivers with limited floodplain areas in ways similar to that of rivers with large floodplains,and that LULC affects fish populations via changes in fish diets and instream habitat features(i.e.,riparian canopy closure,water clarity,substrate heterogeneity,and habitat volume).These effects imply that prevailing changes in LULC threaten the food and livelihood security services provided by inland fisheries,highlighting the importance of policies that maintain native vegetation along riverbanks and in floodplain areas.

Investigation of Groundwater Quality with Borehole Depth in the Basin Granitoids of the Ashanti Region of Ghana

The dependence of groundwater quality on borehole depth is usually debatable in groundwater studies, especially in complex geological formations where aquifer characteristics vary spatially with depth. This study therefore seeks to investigate the relationship between borehole depth and groundwater quality across the granitoid aquifers within the Birimian Supergroup in the Ashanti Region. Physicochemical analysis records of groundwater quality data were collected from 23 boreholes of public and private institutions in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, and the parametric values of iron, fluoride, total hardness, pH, nitrate, and nitrite were used to study the groundwater quality-depth relationship. The results showed that the depth-to-groundwater quality indicated a marginal increase in water quality in the range of 30 to 50 m, which is mathematically represented by the low-value correlation coefficient (r2 = 0.026). A relatively significant increase occurs in the depth range of 50 to 80 m, which is given by a correlation coefficient of r2 = 0.298. The mean percent parameter compatibility was 74%, 82%, 89%, and 97% at 50, 60, 70, and 80 m depths, respectively. The variations in groundwater quality per depth ratio ranged from 1.48, 1.37, 1.27, and 1.21 for 50, 60, 70, and 80 m depth, respectively. The recommended minimum borehole depth for excellent groundwater quality is suggested with a compatibility per meter depth ratio of 1.37. This results in a range between 50 and 70 m as the most desirable drilling depth for excellent groundwater quality within the granitoids of the Birimian Supergroup of the Ashanti Region in Ghana.

Patient and Health System Factors Associated with First Line Tuberculosis Treatment Adherence, 2009-2014

Background: The prevalence and incidence rate of tuberculosis remains high although the disease is known to be almost always curable provided the patient adheres to the treatment regimen. This study assessed the strength of association between known patient and health system factors associated with first line tuberculosis treatment adherence. Methods: A quantitative cross sectional study. Retrospective chart reviews were conducted among 570 persons who had primary tuberculosis and received first line treatment at a health facility within the Nkangala district, Mpumalanga province and who had a treatment outcome recorded between 1st January 2009 and 31st December 2014. Adherence to first line tuberculosis treatment was defined as taking ≥80% of tuberculosis prescribed drugs within a period of 6 to 8 months. Stata software (logistic regressions model) was used to analyze results and find the strength of association between known factors and treatment adherence. Results: Out of the 570 study participants, 473 were adherent and 96 were not adherent. There was a statistically significant association between age 18 years and above (OR: 1.02, P-value: 0.027), sex (lower in males OR: 0.44, P-value: 0.001) and support (OR: 3.04, P-value: 0.05) and HIV (OR: 1, P-value: 0.634) and first line TB treatment adherence. Conclusion and Recommendation: >80% adherence to first line tuberculosis outcome is possible. The support given to people with tuberculosis will further enhance adherence to first line tuberculosis treatment.

Cutaneous Symptoms Revealing M5 Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Case Report

Cutaneous presentation revealing acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is rare, and the prognosis is poor. We report a case of an 11-month-old male who presented with cutaneous lesions present as diffuse purplish papulo-nodular lesions, revealing M5 acute myeloid leukemia. Skin biopsy and immunohistochemical examination, combined with routine blood analysis and bone marrow examination, contributed to early diagnosis. However, despite intensive chemotherapy treatment, the prognosis was poor and death occurred during the first months of treatment.

Effect of genetic sources on anatomical, morphological,and mechanical properties of 14-year-old genetically improved loblolly pine families from two sites in the southern United States

Tree improvement programs on loblolly pine(Pinus taeda) in the southeastern USA has focused primarily on improving growth, form, and disease ***, due to the recent reduction of design values for visually graded southern yellow pine lumber(including loblolly pine), attention has been drawn to the material quality of genetically improved loblolly pine. In this study,we used the time-of-flight(TOF) acoustic tool to assess the effect of genetic families on diameter, slenderness, fiber length, microfibril angle(MFA), velocity and dynamic stiffness estimated using green density(DMOEG) and basic density(DMOEB) of 14-year-old loblolly pine stands selected from two sites. All the 184 and 204 trees of the selected eight half-sib genetic families on sites 1 and 2 respectively were tested using TOF acoustic tool, and two 5 mm core samples taken at breast height level(1.3 m)used to for the anatomical and physical properties *** results indicated a significant positive linear relationship between dynamic MOEs(DMOEGand DMOEB)versus tree diameter, slenderness, and fiber length while dynamic MOEs negatively but nonsignificant correlated with MFA. While there was no significant difference in DMOEBbetween sites; velocity 2 for site 1 was significantly higher than site 2 but DMOEGwas higher for site 2 than site 1. Again, the mean DMOEGand DMOEBreported in the present study presents a snapshot of the expected static MOE for green and 12% moisture conditions respectively for loblolly pine. Furthermore, there were significant differences between families for most of the traits measured and this suggests that forest managers have the opportunity to select families that exhibit the desired fiber morphology for final product performance. Lastly,since the dynamic MOE based on green density(DMOEG),basic density(DMOEB) and velocity 2 present difference conclusions, practitioners of this type of acoustic technique should take care when extrapolating results across the site

Costal Ewing sarcoma is a rare primary malignant bone tumor with delayed diagnosis and complex treatment. The diagnosis, evoked in front of swelling, a parietal pain, supported on the tomodensitometry, rests on the anatomopathological examination. The treatment is based on the combination of chemotherapy surrounding complete surgical removal of the tumor. Radiotherapy should remain reserved for a few specific indications because of its complications. We report the case of three children who presented with a pleural effusion revealing Ewing’s sarcoma affecting the ribs.

HIV自我检测(自检)是扩大HIV防治重点人群检测覆盖面的一大重要措施和策略,具有巨大的应用价值,并在重点人群中有很高的接受性。WHO于2016年发布了《HIV自检和性伴通知指南》,支持在HIV检测服务中实施HIV自检,并为各国建立相应公共卫生政策提供具体指导,以改善HIV诊断的可及性和利用程度。在此策略的推动下,HIV自检已在许多国家和地区得到应用并取得了巨大的防治成效。为进一步推动HIV自检,提高重点人群的检测率,本文综述了目前国内外自检政策、干预模式、自检方法、自检试剂的准确性和自检前后的咨询服务方面的应用,旨在为进一步推动我国HIV自检工作提供参考依据。

由于区域一体化带来的巨大利益,世界上的许多地区包括欧洲(欧盟)、亚洲(东南亚国家联盟)、中美洲和北美洲(北美自由贸易区)以及非洲,都已建立了地区集团。国家的一体化已经被认为是应对全球化、改善成员国家贸易和经济的最合适的途径,同时也是成员国家福利事业最有效的可持续发展方式。非洲的一体化可以追溯到数十年以前,甚至先于摆脱殖民控制的政治独立。数十年前,曾经有过一次非洲一体化集团的数量暴涨,其中包括东非共同体、南部非洲发展共同体、东部和南部非洲共同市场、中非洲联盟经济团体、沙赫尔—撒哈拉国家共同体、阿拉伯马格里布联盟和西非国家经济共同体。西非国家经济共同体在四十多年前由西非国家建立。1975年5月28日,15个成员国家在拉各斯签订了条约。该条约在1993年得到修订,并且为了顺利实现西非无国界的愿景,2007年2月成立了执行委员会秘书处。西共体是为了促进成员国集体自给自足的理想而成立。同时作为一个贸易联盟,旨在通过经济合作和经济一体化,来创造一个单独、广博的贸易集团。西共体还通过了一系列协议来帮助达成完全一体化的目标。人员自由流通协议就是其中之一,签订于1979年5月29日,批准了成员国之间流动人口的住宅权和居住权。该协议分为三个阶段、十五年时间来逐步实施,每个阶段各有五年。本篇论文致力于分析西共体人员自由流通协议的特殊目标,检验其演化成因和实施水平。评估实施的过程;查明在协议实施过程中由于分歧所带来的潜在和现实的挑战;查明这个协议第二、三阶段实施过程缓慢的原因。继而本文将整理鉴别出协议实施进程缓慢的主要决定因素。受新功能主义中一体化理论的启发,本文将运用该理论的概念和理论工具理解造成当前协议执行水平的原因,预测未来的结果,并按照符合该理论基本假设的方式来解释预测的结果。本文在研究过程中使用了一手和二手的数据来源。其中,对关键知情人,例如决策者、移民局官员、统计人员的深入访问是一手数据。二手数据则包括有效的管理数据、学术期刊、文章、西共体成员国家报导及其样本调查和人口普查,作为补充资料。本文认为,在很大程度,由于西共体所表现出来的不足的积极性,以及成员在国家层面上对合约不情不愿的落实推动,导致人员自由流通协议,尤其是其中的二、三阶段,处于连续但缓慢的执行过程中。从所搜集到的资料上看,本文认为造成缓慢实施过程的挑战性因素包括:1)缺乏充分有效的机制;2)国家和超国家层次上的组织机构的虚弱无力;3)缺乏保证西非无国界实现的基础设施;4)缺少与协议相协调的国内法和相关政策;5)成员国有权力根据国内法拒绝其它成员国家的移民进入本国领土(条款4);6)移民和社会福利事业不相容;7)政治体系不稳定;8)对地区内或国内治安的不利影响;9)国家主权;10)文化和财政差异。即便如此,这项协议还是达成了许多成果:例如,通过移民、贸易和投资壁垒的消除,形成了一致的市场调节方针,完成了西共体国家的经济一体化和相互依赖;人口次区域流动达到大多数成员国家移民总数的相对较大比重。人员自由流动与区域经济一体化的总目标有莫大联系,因为这个目标需要通过人员、商品、服务和资本流动的自由化来达成;跨境移民促成西共体成员国,尤其是其中的发展中国家的社会经济发展——地区内外来务工人员的跨境汇款,已经成为用于减少该地区贫困的外来资金的基本、稳定来源;随着全球化和都市化的强化、诸如石油和天然气等新能源的发现、旅游业一类的新兴产业的创立、信息和通信技术的发展。这项协议导致了次区域内的外购;产品和人员的自由流通提高了西共体生物识别身份证,促进了区域内车辆流通的西共体褐色卡机动车辆保险计划的可采纳性。本文建议通过基础教育建立为落实协议而负责的国家学府;制定与协议相协调的国内法;协调次区域内旅游凭证和移民政策的概念和定义。因此,对地区移民和协议实施进展的定期研究十分必要。西共体应特别建立注册定居过程中对东道国以及共同体国家边界地区的骚扰和滥用人权行为的上诉机制;西共体委员会也应该拥有对那些不遵守组织规章制度的成员国进行制裁的权力,并以此作为震慑;本文更进一步地建议增强对此项协议的公众意识,并建议成员国对该协议和西共体所承担的义务,应根据其资产和政治参与程度做出相应的调整。考虑到本文的篇幅限制,笔者还建议增强进一步的研究,从而了解该协议对次区域内普通民众的影响。因此,关于此协议的研究不仅仅是知识分子、精英和执行团体的事,还需要所有西共体国民引导制定可行的发展战略。
