According to the FAIR guiding principles,one of the central attributes for maximizing the added value of information artifacts is *** this paper,I discuss the importance,and propose a characterization of the notion of Semantic ***,I show that a direct consequence of this view is that Semantic Interoperability cannot be achieved without the support of,on one hand,(i)ontologies,as meaning contracts capturing the conceptualizations represented in information artifacts and,on the other hand,of(ii)Ontology,as a discipline proposing formal meth-ods and theories for clarifying these conceptualizations and articulating their *** particular,I discuss the fundamental role of formal ontological theories(in the latter sense)to properly ground the construction of representation languages,as well as methodological and computational tools for supporting the engineering of ontologies(in the former sense)in the context of FAIR.

Determination of ^(210)Pb and ^(212)Pb in water and their radiological impact to the public via drinking water

A sensitive and accurate method for determining ultra low-level 210Pb and 212Pb in water samples through double measurements was *** was pre-concentrated as hydroxides,separated from alkaline earth elements as PbS precipitate,purified by an anion exchange resin chromatography column,precipitated as PbSO4 for source preparation and counted by a low background β-*** procedure was checked with IAEA reference materials,and the results agreed well with the recommended *** detectable activity was 0.062 mBq·L-1 for 210Pb and 0.053 mBq·L-1 for 212Pb with a 48 L water *** drinking water samples were analyzed,with a Pb recovery of 88.8?5.5%,and the typical activity concentrations were 0.191?15.1 mBq·L-1 for 210Pb and of 1.12?5.77 mBq·L-1 for *** estimated committed effective doses to adult members of the public in Italy due to intake of 210Pb and 212Pb in drinking water were 0.096?7.59 μSv·a-1 and 0.005?0.025 μSv·a-1,respectively.

Mucosal adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in the human colonic mucosa: A proof-of-concept study

AIM To investigate the adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacil us rhamnosus GG (LGG) in the colonic mucosa of healthy and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, both in vivo and ex vivo in an organ culture *** For the ex vivo experiment, a total of 98 patients (68 UC patients and 30 normal subjects) were included. Endoscopic biopsies were collected and incubated with and without LGG or LGG-conditioned media to evaluate the mucosal adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects [reduction of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin (IL)-17 expression] of the bacteria, and extraction of DNA and RNA for quantification by real-time (RT)-PCR occurred after the incubation. A dose-response study was performed by incubating biopsies at "regular", double and 5 times higher doses of LGG. For the in vivo experiment, a total of 42 patients (20 UC patients and 22 normal controls) were included. Biopsies were taken from the colons of normal subjects who consumed a commercial formulation of LGG for 7 d prior to the colonoscopy,and the adhesion of the bacteria to the colonic mucosa was evaluated by RT-PCR and compared with that of control biopsies from patients who did not consume the formulation. LGG adhesion and TNFα and IL-17 expression were compared between UC patients who consumed a regular or double dose of LGG supplementation prior to *** In the ex vivo experiment, LGG showed consistent adhesion to the distal and proximal colon in normal subjects and UC patients, with a trend towards higher concentrations in the distal colon, and in UC patients, adhesion was similar in biopsies with active and quiescent inflammation. In addition, bioptic samples from UC patients incubated with LGG conditioned media (CM) showed reduced expression of TNFα and IL-17 compared with the corresponding expression in controls (P < 0.05).
