The european Union(eU)and the United States(US)determine municipal solid waste(MSW)statistics *** eU applies a site-specific methodology that directly measures waste whereas the US employs a materials flow methodology that estimates MSW statistics indirectly based on production and recovery data from *** study dissects the materials flow methodology and presents quantitative materials flow Sankey diagrams for the primary MSW materials to highlight data gaps that can be addressed to improve the methodology’s *** industry plastics data were applied to the materials flow methodology,and the results were within 10%of the plastics statistics reported by the US environmental Protection Agency(US ePA).Drawbacks to the methodologies include eU measurement inaccuracies due to double-counting and not accounting for residual waste in the *** latter may partially explain why landfilling tonnages reported by the US ePA were approximately 60%less than the tonnages reported by the Waste to energy Research and Technology Council(WTeRT)in its national MSW survey that applied the eU methodology in the *** the eU,there is no US national policy that requires states to measure and report state-level waste data to the US *** improvements in US MSW statistics rely heavily on the implementation of national policies to homogenize the measurement and collection of waste data from states.

The main aim of this paper is to describe and analyse the modelling of vertical column tests that undergo fluidisation by the application of a hydraulic gradient.A recent advancement of the material point method（MPM）,allows studying both stationary and non-stationary fluid flow while interacting with the solid *** fluidisation initiation and post-fluidisation processes of the soil will be investigated with an advanced MPM formulation（Double Point）in which the behavior of the solid and the liquid phase is evaluated separately,assigning to each of them a set of material points（MPs）.The result of these simulations are compared to analytic solutions and measurements from laboratory *** work is used as a benchmark test for the MPM double point formulation in the Anura3D software and to verify the feasibility of the software for possible future engineering applications.

·AIM:Toevaluatethevisualfunctionevolutionofretinal pigment epithelial(RPe) tears in patients with age-related macular degeneration(AMD) according to type of occurrence [spontaneous or secondary to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(anti-VeGF) injection] and the topographic location of the tear after a two-year followup period.·MeTHODS: A total of 15 eyes of 14 patients with RPe tears in exudative AMD were analyzed retrospectively at the University eye Clinic of Trieste. Inclusion criteria were: patient age of 50 or older with AMD and RPe tears both spontaneous occurring or post anti-VeGF treatment. Screening included: careful medical history,complete ophthalmological examination, fluorescein angiography(FA), indocyanine green angiography(ICG),autofluorescence and infrared imaging and optical coherence tomography(OCT). Patients were evaluated every month for visual acuity(VA), fundus examination and OCT. Other data reported were: presence of PeD,number of injections before the tear, location of the lesion.·ReSUlTS:Meanfollow-up was24wk(SD±4wk). Atotal of 15 eyes were studied for RPe tear. In 6 cases(40%),the RPe tears occurred within two years of anti-VeGF injections the others occurred spontaneously. In 13cases(86.6%), the RPe tear was associated with pigment epithelial detachment(PeD). In 7 cases(46.6%), the RPe tear occurred in the central area of the retina and involved the fovea. Two lesions were found in the parafoveal region, six in the extra-macular area. In all cases visual acuity decreased at the end of the follow-up period(P ependently of the type or the topographical location of the lesion.·CONClUSION: RPe tear occurs in exudative AMD as a spontaneous complication or in relation to anti-VeGF injections. Visual acuity decreased significantly and gradually in the follow-up period in all cases. No correlation was found between visual loss and the type of onset or the topographic location of the tears.

The safety of underground traffic infrastructures can be considered from several viewpoints as a fairly mature *** minimum requirements for road tunnel safety were developed for all european countries in ***,safety is codified in a detailed(at times even too detailed)manner,such as for road tunnels in several *** design can at times be extremely rigid and difficult for adapting to specific conditions,which in some cases may need to be more demanding than a"standard"*** types of underground infrastructure,particularly,rail tunnels and underground industrial facilities,share a number of common safety-related issues with road tunnels,but are generally much less *** example,there is no common regulation for the ventilation of rail tunnels in *** metro systems have different safety standards,in spite of having similar *** present study illustrates selected aspects of a holistic approach required for achieving a high and sustainable safety level in underground *** aspects and differences between the various types of"conventional"and"emerging"underground infrastructure are outlined and the consequences are discussed,such as the different types of threats,widely differing probabilities of occurrence,and widely differing number of persons *** facilities require different safety systems;however,they can rely on common thinking and *** is essential for all stakeholders,ranging from operators and safety officers to fire services and administrative authorities,to grasp commonalities and differences to adapt requirements,regulations,and approaches to their specific needs.

Clinical significance of lactate in acute cardiac patients

lactate, as a metabolite of easy and quick assessment, has been studied over time in critically ill patients in order to evaluate its prognostic ability. The present review is focused on the prognostic role of lactate levels in acute cardiac patients(that is with acute coronary syndrome, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, non including post cardiac surgery patients). In patients with STelevation myocardial infarction treated with mechanical revascularization, hyperlactatemia identified a subset of patients at higher risk for early death and in-hospital complications, being strictly related mainly to hemodynamic derangement. The prognostic impact of hyperlactatemia on mortality has been documented in patients with cardiogenic shock and in those with cardiac arrest even if there is no cut-off value of lactate to be associated with worse outcome or to guide resuscitation or hemodynamic management. Therapeutic hypothermia seems to affect per se lactate values which have been shown to progressively decrease during hypothermia. The mechanism(s) accounting for lactate levels during hypothemia seem to be multiple ranging from the metabolic effects of reduced temperatures to the hemodynamic effects of hypothermia(i.e., reduced need of vasopressor agents). serial lactate measurements over time, or lactate clearance, have been reported to be clinically more reliable than lactate absolute value also in acute cardiac patients. Despite differences in study design, timing of lactate measurements and type of acute cardiac conditions(i.e., cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, refractory cardiac arrest), available evidence strongly suggests that higher lactate levels can be observed on admission in non-survivors and that higher lactate clearance is associated with better outcome.

Calculations of point defect energetics with Density Functional Theory(DFT)can provide valuable insight into several optoelectronic,thermodynamic,and kinetic *** calculations commonly use methods ranging from semi-local functionals with a-posteriori corrections to more computationally intensive hybrid functional *** applications of DFT-based high-throughput computation for data-driven materials discovery,point defect properties are of interest,yet are currently excluded from available materials *** work presents a benchmark analysis of automated,semi-local point defect calculations with a-posteriori corrections,compared to 245“gold standard”hybrid calculations previously *** consider three different a-posteriori correction sets implemented in an automated workflow,and evaluate the qualitative and quantitative differences among four different categories of defect information:thermodynamic transition levels,formation energies,Fermi levels,and dopability *** highlight qualitative information that can be extracted from high-throughput calculations based on semi-local DFT methods,while also demonstrating the limits of quantitative accuracy.

The Campos Gerais Domain(CGD)in southeastern Brazil is an approximately 180 km×35 km area of Archean–Proterozoic rocks located southwest of the São Francisco Craton(SFC).The Archean–Paleopro terozoic evolution of the CGD—alongside its potential correlation with the SFC or other cratonic blocks in the region-is currently *** present the results of systematic petrography,bulkrock geochemistry,mineral chemistry and geochronology for a suite of scarcely studied mafic–ultramafic rocks from the *** also provide a compilation of previously reported bulk-rock geochemical and spinel group mineral chemical data for mafic–ultramafic rocks throughout the CGD,and geochronological information for various lithotypes in the *** CGD records a protracted Mesoarchean to Statherian(3.1–1.7 Ga)crustal evolution,which we interpret to share a common history with the southern SFC and their related reworked segments,suggesting that it is a westward extension of this cratonic *** metavolcano-sedimentary rocks of the Fortaleza de Minas and Alpinópolis segments represent a Mesoarchean greenstone belt that is stratigraphically and chemically comparable to Archean greenstone belts worldwide,and that is broadly coeval with a local suite of tonalite-trondhjemite-grano diorite(TTG)gneisses and migmatites.U-Pb SHRIMP zircon data from a subalkaline metagabbro yielded a concordia age of ca.2.96 Ga,revealing a previously unrecognized phase of Archean magmatism in the CGD that can be chrono-correlated with metakomatiite and TTG generation elsewhere in the São Francisco *** data contradict a hypothesis whereby the metavolcano-sedimentary rocks of the jacuí-Bom jesus da Penha and Petúnia segments represent an ophiolite,as previously suggested,instead presenting features that point to formation in association with a continental *** with a U-Pb(SHRIMP)crystallization age of ca.2.13 Ga recorded by zircon grains from a metaultramafic rock,these data h

Incidence and mortality of acute and chronic pancreatitis in the Netherlands:A nationwide record-linked cohort study for the years 1995-2005

AIM:To analyze trends in incidence and mortality of acute pancreatitis(AP) and chronic pancreatitis(CP) in the Netherlands and for international standard ***:A nationwide cohort is identified through record linkage of hospital data for AP and CP,accumulated from three nationwide Dutch registries:the hospital discharge register,the population register,and the death certificate ***-and age-group specific incidence rates of AP and CP are defined for the period 2000-2005 and mortality rates of AP and CP for the period ***,incidence and mortality rates over time are reported for Dutch and international(european and World Health Organization) standard ***:Incidence of AP per 100000 persons per year increased between 2000 and 2005 from 13.2(95%CI:12.6-13.8) to 14.7(95%CI:14.1-15.3).Incidence of AP for males increased from 13.8(95%CI:12.9-14.7) to 15.2(95%CI:14.3-16.1),for females from 12.7(95%CI:11.9-13.5) to 14.2(95%CI:13.4-15.1).Irregular patterns over time emerged for *** mean incidence per 100000 persons per year was 1.77,for males 2.16,and for females *** for AP fluctuated during 1995-2005 between 6.9 and 11.7 per million persons per year and was almost similar for males and *** CP,mortality for males fluctuated between 1.1(95%CI:0.6-2.3) and 4.0(95%CI:2.8-5.8),for females between 0.7(95%CI:0.3-1.6) and 2.0(95%CI:1.2-3.2).Incidence and mortality of AP and CP increased markedly with *** rates were lowest for World Health Organization standard ***:Incidence of AP steadily increased while incidence of CP *** for both AP and CP remained fairly *** burden and health care costs probably will increase because of an ageing Dutch population.
