Water and sediment geochemistry of an urban lake: Implications to weathering and anthropogenic activity

Lakes are sensitive ecosystems and respond quickly to any natural or anthropogenic contamination,particularly in urban areas due to poor planning and mismanagement in urban settlement, encroachment, and anthropogenic pollution. In the current study, water and sediment geochemistry are used along with available time series of geospatial data sets to assess: a) provenance and sources of pollution in the lake sediment and water, b) health risk using various sediment and water quality indices, and c)the key drivers of lake shrinkage. Chemical index of alteration(CIA) of lake sediment is higher(>85) with an atypical cluster of samples(CIA 50-75) towards the south and west of the lake. Further, samples in this cluster show granodioritic provenance which is contrary to the overall mafic provenance of lake sediment. The unusual decrease in CIA in the southern and western side of the lake is attributed to anthropogenically induced fresh sediment in the lake. The results indicate that the sediment is highly polluted by cadmium(Cd) and moderately polluted by copper(Cu), molybdenum(Mo), lead(Pb), and boron(B). Higher Metal Index(MI) values for most of the water samples(>70%) and Hazard Index(HI) for chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni), and cadmium(Cd) towards west and south of the lake reflect the deterioration of water quality in the lake. Moreover, land use change detection attained from available time series of geospatial data sets indicate a drastic transformation of the open water area into other land use classes particularly human settlement, shrinking the lake open water area by 13 km~2 since 1859. The current study will help policy makers and managers to restore and conserve the lake.

The primary technique used for air traffic surveillance is radar.However,nowadays,its role in surveillance is gradually being replaced by the recently adopted Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast(ADS-B).ADS-B offers a higher accuracy,lower power consumption,and longer range than radar,thus providing more safety to aircraft.The coverage of terrestrial radar and ADS-B is confined to continental parts of the globe,leaving oceans and poles uncovered by real-time surveillance measures.This study presents an optimized Low-Earth Orbit(LEO)-based ADS-B constellation for global air traffic surveillance over intercontinental trans-oceanic flight routes.The optimization algorithm is based on performance evaluation parameters,i.e.,coverage time,satellite availability,and orbit stability(precession and perigee rotation),and communication analysis.The results indicate that the constellation provides ample coverage in the simulated global oceanic regions.The constellation is a feasible and cost-effective solution for global air supervision,which can supplement terrestrial ADS-B and radar systems.

Adult neurogenesis,the process of creating new neurons,involves the coordinated division,migration,and differentiation of neural stem cells.This process is restricted to neurogenic niches located in two distinct areas of the brain:the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle,where new neurons are generated and then migrate to the olfactory bulb.Neurogenesis has been thought to occur only during the embryonic and early postnatal stages and to decline with age due to a continuous depletion of neural stem cells.Interestingly,recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of adult brain neurogenesis,bridging the knowledge gap between embryonic and adult neurogenesis.Here,we discuss the current status of adult brain neurogenesis in light of what we know about neural stem cells.In this notion,we talk about the importance of intra cellular signaling molecules in mobilizing endogenous neural stem cell prolife ration.Based on the current understanding,we can declare that these molecules play a role in targeting neurogenesis in the mature brain.However,to achieve this goal,we need to avoid the undesired proliferation of neural stem cells by controlling the necessary checkpoints,which can lead to tumorigenesis and prove to be a curse instead of a blessing or hope.

Data security assurance is crucial due to the increasing prevalence of cloud computing and its widespread use across different industries,especially in light of the growing number of cybersecurity threats.A major and everpresent threat is Ransomware-as-a-Service(RaaS)assaults,which enable even individuals with minimal technical knowledge to conduct ransomware operations.This study provides a new approach for RaaS attack detection which uses an ensemble of deep learning models.For this purpose,the network intrusion detection dataset“UNSWNB15”from the Intelligent Security Group of the University of New South Wales,Australia is analyzed.In the initial phase,the rectified linear unit-,scaled exponential linear unit-,and exponential linear unit-based three separate Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP)models are developed.Later,using the combined predictive power of these three MLPs,the RansoDetect Fusion ensemble model is introduced in the suggested methodology.The proposed ensemble technique outperforms previous studieswith impressive performance metrics results,including 98.79%accuracy and recall,98.85%precision,and 98.80%F1-score.The empirical results of this study validate the ensemble model’s ability to improve cybersecurity defenses by showing that it outperforms individual MLPmodels.In expanding the field of cybersecurity strategy,this research highlights the significance of combined deep learning models in strengthening intrusion detection systems against sophisticated cyber threats.

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental condition that may be caused by any kind of stress or emotional upset experienced by the patient.It affects a large percentage of people globally,who fluctuate between depression and mania,or vice versa.A pleasant or unpleasant mood is more than a reflection of a state of mind.Normally,it is a difficult task to analyze through physical examination due to a large patient-psychiatrist ratio,so automated procedures are the best options to diagnose and verify the severity of bipolar.In this research work,facial microexpressions have been used for bipolar detection using the proposed Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)-based model.Facial Action Coding System(FACS)is used to extract micro-expressions called Action Units(AUs)connected with sad,happy,and angry emotions.Experiments have been conducted on a dataset collected from Bahawal Victoria Hospital,Bahawalpur,Pakistan,Using the Patient Health Questionnaire-15(PHQ-15)to infer a patient’s mental state.The experimental results showed a validation accuracy of 98.99%for the proposed CNN modelwhile classification through extracted featuresUsing SupportVectorMachines(SVM),K-NearestNeighbour(KNN),and Decision Tree(DT)obtained 99.9%,98.7%,and 98.9%accuracy,respectively.Overall,the outcomes demonstrated the stated method’s superiority over the current best practices.

Efficient electrocatalytic rupture of energy-rich molecules(H_(2)and O_(2))is a green approach for gener-ating clean energy for modern societies.In this context,porphyry-type molecular electrocatalysts act intelligently toward oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),a fundamental process in fuel cells,due to their redox-rich chemistry,which involves core metal ions and macrocyclic ligands.The concerned scientific community has tried many times to correlate the ORR intermediates with their formation kinetics and simplify the associated multi H+/e-stages during the ORR process,constructing several volcano plots be-tween catalytic Tafel data,turnover frequencies,and overpotentials for many electrocatalysts.Despite the fact that many review articles on molecular electrocatalysts for ORR have been published,understanding the strategic implications and molecular catalyst intelligence towards homogenous ORR has been poorly explored.This review examined the relationships between volcano plots of current vs.thermodynamic parameters and the Sabatier principle in order to explain the intelligence of molecular electrocatalysts and approaches for their creation,as well as the difficulties and potential prospects of molecular electro-catalysts.These facts distinguish this review from previously published articles and will pique the scien-tific community’s interest in avoiding trial-and-error procedures for catalyst creation while also allowing for more exact evaluations of the molecular catalyst’s performance.

为了处理卡马西平抗生素造成的环境污染，采用冷冻/碳化法制备了铁钴双金属粒子电极(Fe， Co/NPs@GO)，并通过改善铁钴的前驱体比例优化了Fe，Co/NPs@GO双金属三维粒子电极体系对CBZ 的降解性能。探讨了电流密度和PMS投加量对CBZ降解的影响。结果表明：0.15 g/L的Fe， Co/NPs@GO (Fe:Co=1:1)、3 mmol/L PMS，在20 mA/cm2的电流密度下，CBZ (1 mg/L)在 30 min 内的去除率能达到99.5%。与单纯的催化剂活化PMS体系相比，加入电催化条件后，CBZ的去除率提升了约37%。通过自由基淬灭实验及电子顺磁共振(EPR)证实，羟基自由基和单线态氧是降解CBZ的主导活性物种，并推测出CBZ在电催化耦合三维粒子电极活化过一硫酸盐(PMS)体系的降解机理。同时，粒子电极的循环利用实验表明，Fe， Co/NPs@GO粒子电极具有较好的催化稳定性和重复利用性。Fe， Co/NPs@GO双金属三维粒子电极体系在电催化氧化处理水中的CBZ等抗生素污染方面有很大的应用前景。

The potential mechanism of Isodon suzhouensis against COVID-19 via EGFR/TLR4 pathways

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought the new challenges to scientific research. Isodon suzhouensis has good anti-inflammatory and antioxidant stress effects， which is considered as a potential treatment for COVID-19. The possibility for the treatment of COVID-19 with suzhouensis and its potential mechanism of action were explored by employing molecular docking and network pharmacology. Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to screen drug targets， and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced RAW264.7 and NR8383 cells inflammation model was used for experimental verification. Collectively a total of 209 possible linkages against 18 chemical components from suzhouensis and 1194 COVID-19 related targets were selected. Among these， 164 common targets were obtained from the intersection of suzhouensis and COVID-19. GO and KEGG enriched 582 function targets and 87 target proteins pathways， respectively. The results from molecular docking studies revealed that rutin， vitexin， isoquercitrin and quercetin had significant binding ability with SARS-CoV-23CLpro and ACE2. In vitro studies showed that Isodon suzhouensis extract (ISE) may inhibit the activation of PI3K/Akt pathway and the expression level of downstream pro-inflammatory factors by inhibiting the activation of EGFR in RAW264.7 cells induced by LPS. In addition， ISE was able to inhibit the activation of TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway in NR8383 cells exposed to LPS. Overall， the network pharmacology and in vitro studies conclude that active components from suzhouensis have strong therapeutic potential against COVID-19 through multi-target， multi-pathway dimensions and can be a promising candidate against COVID-19.

BACKGROUND Peptic ulcer disease(PUD)remains a significant healthcare burden,contributing to morbidity and mortality worldwide.Despite advancements in therapies,its prevalence persists,particularly in regions with widespread nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)use and Helicobacter pylori infection.AIM To comprehensively analyse the risk factors and outcomes of PUD-related upper gastrointestinal(GI)bleeding in Pakistani population.METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 142 patients with peptic ulcer bleeding who underwent upper GI endoscopy from January to December 2022.Data on demographics,symptoms,length of stay,mortality,re-bleed,and Forrest classification was collected.RESULTS The mean age of patients was 53 years,and the majority was men(68.3%).Hematemesis(82.4%)and epigastric pain(75.4%)were the most common presenting symptoms.Most patients(73.2%)were discharged within five days.The mortality rates at one week and one month were 10.6%and 14.8%,respectively.Re-bleed within 24 h and seven days occurred in 14.1%and 18.3%of patients,respectively.Most ulcers were Forrest class(FC)Ⅲ(72.5%).Antiplatelet use was associated with higher mortality at 7 and 30 d,while alternative medications were linked to higher 24-hour re-bleed rates.NSAID use was associated with more FCⅢulcers.Re-bleed at 24 h and 7 d was strongly associated with one-week or one-month mortality.CONCLUSION Antiplatelet use and rebleeding increase the risk of early mortality in PUD-related upper GI bleeding,while alternative medicines are associated with early rebleeding.
