Simultaneous monitoring of PCB profiles in the urban air of Dalian,China with active and passive samplings

The concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls （PCBs） in the urban air of Dalian, China was monitored from November 2009 to October 2010 with active high-volume sampler and semipermeable membrane device （SPMD） passive sampler. The concentration of PCBs （particle ＋ gas）（∑PCBs） ranged from 18.6 to 91.0 pg/m3, with an average of 50.9 pg/m3, and the most abundant dioxin-like PCB （DL-PCBs） was PCB118. The WHO-TEQ values of DL-PCBs were 3.6--22.1 fg/m3, with an average of 8.5 fg/m3, and PCB126 was the maximum contributor to ZTEQ. There was a much larger amount of PCBs in the gas phase than in the particulate phase. The dominant PCB components were lower and middle molecular weight PCBs. With increasing chlorination level, the concentration of the PCB congeners in the air decreased. The gas-particulate partitioning of PCBs was different for the four seasons. The gas- particulate partitioning coefficients （logKp） vs. subcooled liquid vapor pressures （logPL~） of PCBs had reasonable correlations for different sampling sites and seasons. The absorption mechanism contributed more to the gas-particulate partitioning process than adsorption. Correlation analysis of meteorological parameters with the concentration of PCBs was conducted using SPSS packages. The ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure were important factors influencing the concentration of PCBs in the air. The distribution pattern of the congeners of PCBs and the dominant contributors to DL-PCBs and TEQ in active samples and SPMDs passive samples were similar. SPMD mainly sequestrated gas phase PCBs.

Reconfigurable robot based on modular joint concept

A reconfigurable modular robot was developed for a free-flying robot project. This robot was composed of 6 same modular joints and one gripper. In order to save space and cost for transporting it into the space, the robot should be folded overall and locked. A big central hole in the modular joint was designed for the placement of the cables and plugs in the robot arm, which prevented them from damage of high temperature, radiation in the space environment and the motion of the robot. Multiple sensors were integrated into the fully modular joint, such as joint torque sensor, joint position sensor and temperature sensors, which made the joint more intelligent. A zero gravity experimental system was developed to verify the functions of the robot under zero gravity environment.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)were investigated in water,sediments,suspended sediments and biofilms in Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR),*** showed that dissolved bioavailable PBDEs in water of TGR collected with semipermeable membrane device(SPMD)-based virtual organisms(VOs)were very low in the range of *** 811 pg/g lipid and the detected compounds were mainly low molecular BDEs such as BDE-15,17,28,47,49,66,99 and *** PBDE levels in the sediment core collected near the dam were also very low in the range of 84e300 pg/g dw and the detected compounds were mainly large molecular BDEs such as BDE-196,197,206,207 and *** suspended sediments and biofilms,the levels of PBDEs ranged from 298 to 52,843 pg/g dw and the detected compounds were also mainly large molecular BDEs such as BDE-196,197,201,203,206,207,208 and *** dominant compound was BDE-209 which accounted for more than 90%of the total ***,large molecular BDEs tended to be attached on fine *** vertical profile of BDEs on suspended sediments(SS)showed that SSs in the middle depth of water contained high level of *** phenomenon indicated that most of BDE-209 did not settle into the sediment in front of the dam,instead transported further to downstream.

Spatially Resolved Photoelectric Performance of Axial GaAs Nanowire pn-Diodes

The spatially resolved photoelectric response of a single axial GaAs nanowire pn-diode has been investigated with scanning photocurrent and Kelvin probe force microscopy. Optical generation of carriers at the pn-junction has been shown to dominate the photoresponse. A photocurrent of 88 pA, an open circuit voltage of 0.56 V and a fill factor of 69% were obtained under AM 1.5 G conditions. The photocurrent followed the increasing photoexcitation with 0.24 A/W up to an illumination density of at least 90 W/cm2, which is important for potential applications in concentrator solar cells.

Dependence of Fatigue Macrocrack Propagation Resistance of Titanium Beta 21S on Precipitate Size and Distribution

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of microstructure on the macrocrack propagation resistance of the titanium alloy Beta 21S. In this work, single-step aging treatments were used to create different microstructures by altering variables such as aging temperature and time. The influence of the ?-precipitate size and distribution in the fatigue crack macrocrack propagation resistance of the resulting microstructures was investigated. The main microstructural feature of ??titanium alloys is the preferential precipitation of the hardening ?-phase at ? grain boundaries forming a continuous ?-layer. The resulting PFZ (precipitate-free zone) adjacent to this continuous ?-layer does not contain any precipitates, and is therefore soft with respect to the surrounding age-hardened matrix. Preferential plastic deformation in the soft zones can have a negative effect on some properties. Two microstructures were evaluated and the results obtained showed that, at low stress intensity (delta K) levels, the cracks propagated transcrystalline and the propagation rate of macrocracks depends on the size and distribution of ?-plates in the ??matrix, while with increasing plastic zone size (high delta K levels) the macrocracks propagated intercrystalline and the propagation rate is influenced by the PFZ path in the microstructure.

The concentrations of 28 organochlorine pesticides(OCPs)in the urban air of Dalian,China were measured using semipermeable membrane devices(SPMDs)for the first ***-hexachlorocyclohexane(a-HCH),b-HCH,pentachlorobenzene(PentCB),hexachlorobenzene(HexCB),4,40-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(4,40-DDT),4,40-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene,endosulfan-I and endosulfan-II were the predominant OCPs in the urban air of *** concentration of OCPs sequestrated by SPMDs(CSPMD)ranged from undetected to 56,772 pg SPMD-1and had a linear correlation with the reciprocal of the average ambient atmospheric temperature(1/T).The CSPMDof PentCB and HexCB had negative correlations with T,whereas the other detected OCPs had a positive *** source of HCHs,DDTs,HexCB,PentCB,chlordane,and endosulfan in the air were also *** OCPs in the urban air of Dalian could be attributed to the seasonal usage of pesticides,combustion,volatilization of aged OCPs from soil,water,plants,and long-range atmospheric transport.

Ephrin-B2 is differentially expressed in the intestinal epithelium in Crohn's disease and contributes to accelerated epithelial wound healing in vitro

AIM:Eph receptor tyrosine kinases and their membrane bound receptor-like ligands, the ephrins, represent a bi-directional cell-cell contact signaling system that directs epithelial movements in development. The meaning of this system in the adult human gut is unknown. We investigated the Eph/ephrin mRNA expression in the intestinal epithelium of healthy controls and patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: mRNA expression profiles of all Eph/ephrin family members in normal small intestine and colon were established by real-time RT-PCR. In addition, differential expression in IBD was investigated by cDNA array technology, and validated by both real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Potential effects of enhanced EphB/ephrin-B signaling were analyzed in an in vitro IEC-6 cell scratch wound model. RESULTS: Human adult intestinal mucosa exhibits a complex pattern of Eph receptors and ephrins. Beside the known prominent co-expression of EphA2 and ephrinAl, we found abundantly co-expressed EphB2 and ephrin-B1/2. Interestingly, cDNA array data, validated by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry, showed upregulation of ephrin-B2 in both perilesional and lesional intestinal epithelial cells of IBD patients, suggesting a role in epithelial homeostasis. Stimulation of ephrin-B signaling in ephrin- B1/2 expressing rat IEC-6-cells with recombinant EphB1-Fc resulted in a significant dose-dependent acceleration of wound closure. Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy showed that EphB1-Fc induced coordinated migration of wound edge cells is associated with enhanced formation of lamellipodial protrusions into the wound, increased actin stress fiber assembly and production of laminin at the wound edge. CONCLUSION: EphB/ephrin-B signaling might represent a novel protective mechanism that promotes intestinal epithelial wound healing, with potential impact on epithelial restitution in IBD.

Hierarchical self-assembly is a fundamental principle in nature, which gives rise to astonishing supramolecular architectures that are an inspiration for the development of innovative materials in nanotechnolog）a Here, we present the unique structure of a cone-shaped amphiphilic designer peptide. While tracking its concentration-dependent morphologies, we observed elongated bilayered single tapes at the beginning of the assembly process, which further developed into novel double-helix-like superstructures at high concentrations. This architecture is characterized by a tight intertwisting of two individual helices, resulting in a periodic pitch size over their total lengths of several hundred nanometers. Solution X-ray scattering data revealed a marked 2-layered internal organization. All these characteristics remained unaltered for the investigated period of almost three months. In their collective morphology, the assemblies are integrated into a network with hydrogel characteristics. Such a peptide-based structure holds promise as a building block for next-generation nanostructured biomaterials.
