As part of an ongoing inventory of the helminth parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico, 570 individual fish were collected between Apr 2008 and Oct 2011 in 26 localities along the Cuatro Ciénegas region in Coahuila State, northern Mexico. Seventeen species of hosts, mostly corresponding to nearctic freshwater elements, were studied. A total of 8324 individual worms were collected during this survey, representing 25 species of helminths, of which 9 were digeneans, 3 monogeneans, 3 acanthocephalans, 9 nematodes and 1 cestode. Most of the records in this checklist represent new host or locality records. The information provided in this checklist may be helpful for our understanding of the biodiversity and historical biogeography of this host-parasite system, because in the Cuatro Ciénegas region occur a nearctic freshwater fish fauna, along with neotropical and endemic elements, and from a biogeographical point of view, this may represent a transitional area.

Astyanax mexicanus has repeatedly colonized cave environments,displaying evolutionary parallelisms in many troglobitic *** being a model system for the study of adaptation to life in perpetual darkness,the parasites that infect cavefish are practically *** this study,we investigated the macroparasite communities in 18 cavefish populations from independent lineages and compared them with the parasite diversity found in their sister surface fish populations,with the aim of better understanding the role that parasites play in the colonization of new *** the cavefish populations,we identified 13 parasite taxa,including a subset of 10 of the 27 parasite taxa known for the surface *** infecting the cavefish belong to five taxonomic groups,including trematodes,monogeneans,nematodes,copepods,and *** are the most dominant group,found in 14 *** macroparasites include species with direct life cycles and trophic transmission,including invasive ***,paired comparisons indicate higher parasite richness in the cavefish than in the surface *** variation in parasite composition across the caves suggests historical and geographical contingencies in the host-parasite colonization process and potential evolution of local *** base-line data on parasite diversity in cavefish populations of *** provides a foundation to explore the role of divergent parasite infections under contrasting ecological pressures(cave *** environments)in the evolution of cave adaptive traits.

A large fire of 233 ha in Huascarán national park in peru provided an opportunity to compare plant and bird responses in burned and nearby unburned zones of the puna. Heights and live diameters of flagship puya raimondii rosettes(assigned to four broad developmental phases), plant communities(66 species in 24 families and nine growth forms) and bird communities(77 species in six trophic guilds) were monitored after the fire. Although no mortality was observed, puya raimondii plants were affected by the fire, losing approximately 60% of their photosynthetic area across all developmental phases, but recovered quickly during the first two years after fire. The comparison of puya rosette recovery after fire was complicated by the changes in live rosette diameter for unburned plants, which showed plasticity of photosynthetic area linked to seasonal and annual fluctuations in precipitation in this relatively dry environment(decreased by 26% for mature adult plants over the study period). Fire caused an immediate change in the density, biomass and composition of vegetation. Although the species present remained similar, their abundances changed significantly immediately after the fire, with notable reductions in dominant tussock grasses. This provided opportunities for other plants, resulting in higher postfire diversity of plant species, genera, families and growth forms. In turn, the changes in vegetation after fire affected the composition of birds according to their trophic guild. Granivores largely disappeared,generalists were mostly unaffected, and other guilds showed a more complex response. As the vegetation recovered, most displaced birds returned within approximately one year.

Laguna de Encinillas, located in Chihuahua, Mexico, is an ephemeral lake situated within a playa lake sedimentary depositional environment. This region plays a significant role in the aquifer supplying water to Chihuahua City. A surficial soil sampling campaign was conducted in 2017, 2018, and 2021 to assess the potential impact of surface soil composition on groundwater quality. The collected soil samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICp-MS) following microwave-assisted digestion. The analytical results were employed to generate spatial distribution maps of elemental concentrations using QGIS, applying interpolation methods such as inverse distance weighting (IDW) and Kriging. The analysis revealed elevated concentrations of beryllium (Be), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), magnesium (Mg), and strontium (Sr) in the eastern part of the study area. In contrast, arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) were more prevalent in the western sector. notably, high levels of barium (Ba), silver (Ag), cobalt (Co), potassium (K), and scandium (Sc) were identified in the northeastern region. At the same time, nickel (ni), titanium (Ti), and vanadium (V) were concentrated in the northern portion. Manganese (Mn) was particularly prominent in the southern area. The geogenic source of these elements is likely linked to the volcanic rocks from the surrounding mountain ranges.

Minimally Invasive Surgery for necrotizing pancreatitis: A Case Report

Introduction: necrotizing pancreatitis management is complex and varies significantly among clinicians. Minimally invasive approaches like transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy are emerging as effective treatment options. This case report underscores the technique’s efficacy, clinical outcomes, and role in reducing complications. Clinical Observation: A 59-year-old male with a history of smoking and alcoholism presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Over the following weeks, he developed symptoms including asthenia, weight loss, and melena. Diagnostic workup revealed severe anemia and Balthazar E necrotizing pancreatitis, with significant intra-abdominal fluid collections and signs of infection. After initial conservative management, the patient underwent transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy due to deteriorating clinical status. The procedure involved removing necrotic tissue and performing a cystogastroanastomosis and jejunostomy. postoperative care included fasting, parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and enzymatic replacement. The patient recovered well, with reduced necrotic tissue on follow-up imaging, and was discharged twelve days post-surgery [1]. Conclusion: Transgastric necrosectomy by laparoscopy is a valuable first-line surgical option for patients with symptomatic necrotizing pancreatitis, particularly in cases without prior interventions. This minimally invasive technique helps reduce major complications and mortality, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional open necrosectomy. The multidisciplinary approach and careful postoperative management were crucial to the patient’s favorable outcome. The case highlights the potential of transgastric necrosectomy as an effective treatment strategy in managing complex pancreatitis cases, including those with associated duodenal perforation [2].
