Diabetes mellitus control in Mexico is practiced by using antidiabetic agents and, by empirical way using medicinal plants. Cucurbita ficifolia (C. ficifolia) has been attributed with hypoglycemic, hypotriglyceridemic, and anti-inflam- matory effects, and D-chiro-inositol (DCI), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and β-sitosterol were proposed as active principles. The last two compounds were suggested as activators of two transcription factors, PPARα and PPARγ, in C2C12 myocytes, which participate in β-oxidation of fatty acids and insulin sensitivity. However, the involvement of the hepatocytic and adipocytic PPARs in the effects of C. ficifolia has not yet been explored. This research aimed to determine the effects of C. ficifolia on PPARα, PPARγ, and inflammatory cytokines in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mice, HepG2 hepatocytes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes, implicating two additional cell types associated with metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. STZ-induced diabetes mice received C. ficifolia (200 mg/kg/day) for 30 days, measuring serum cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6). RNA was extracted from liver. Besides, HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells were incubated (24 h) with C. ficifolia (0.078 mM DCI), using pioglitazone or fenofibrate as controls. RNA was also extracted from cells and PCR in real-time was performed to determinate PPARα and PPARγ expression. In diabetic animals, C. ficifolia decreased glycemia and body weight, decreasing the expression level of TNF-α and IL-6. In addition, C. ficifolia increased PPARα expression in liver of diabetic animals, in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells;PPARγ expression only significantly increased in HepG2 cells. The data suggest that the effects on the glycemia and lipids of C. ficifolia and its anti-inflammatory effects imply, besides skeletal muscle cells, hepatic and adipocytic PPARα activation, without affectation on PPARγ. Two nanostructured A1-Cu-Fe alloys, A164Cu24Fe12 and A162.5Cu25.2Fe12.3, have been studied. Icosahedral quasicrystalline （ψ） A164CH24FeI2 and crystalline cubic （ β） ***25.2Fe12.3 cylindrical ingots were first produced using normal casting techniques. High-energy mechanical milling was then conducted to obtain β icosahedral and β intermetallic nanostructured powders. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization resistance, and potentiodynamic polarization were used to investigate the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of the powders in solutions with different pH values. Current density （icorr）, polarization resistance （Rp）, and impedance modulus （121） were determined. The results showed that regardless of pH value, increasing the solution temperature enhanced the corrosion resistance of the both phases. However, the electrochemical behavior of the phase indicated that its stability depends on the submerged exposure time in neutral and alkaline environments. This behavior was related to the type of corrosion products present on the surfaces of the particles along with the diffusion and charge-transfer mechanisms of the corrosion process.

In the period between the idealistic vision of the ＇Reshaping society＇ and Thatcherism, in the so-called ＇Swinging London’,the second wave of modernism is facing the demands and the quantities of bombed cities. The architects of that season, moved by political ideals and interpreting the cultural ferment, have been responsible for shaping the city on the collective dreams and aspirations of the society and for forging the identity of London as unique experience in the international panorama. This paper focuses on the spatial relations between city and home, how they raised in that specific historical context, in which form they realized, and what are the architectural implications for current design culture. The methodology, based both on the literature review and on the graphic comparison of six case-studies, is articulated in four steps. First, the six case-studies are selected according to specific criteria. Second, the sociohistorical background is reported. Third, the cases are shortly introduced using text descriptions and graphic tools. Fourth, the cases are compared. This process leads to the definition of four transversal architectural items： the density, the settlement pattern, the basement, and the threshold, intended as elements able to raise connections between past and contemporary design culture.

In the last decades, higher attention has been paid to olfactory perception in birds. As a consequence, a handful of avian species have been discovered to use olfaction in different contexts. Nevertheless, we still have a very limited knowledge about the use of odor cues in avian social life, particularly, in the case of songbirds. Here, we investigate if female house sparrows Passer domesticus show any preference for the odor of kin and nonkin conspecifics and we also test a possible role of familiarity based on male see nt in female choice. We performed the experiment with captive birds twice, duri ng the non breeding and breedi ng seas ons. Our results show that female house sparrows strongly avoided the odor of unrelated familiar (UF) males, both in the breeding and nonbreeding seasons. Our results suggest recognition for olfactory stimuli related to familiarity and kin ship. We suggest that avoidance for UF males is associated with previous experie nee in this species. Also, we provided further evidenee to the use of olfaction in passerine species by using a new experimental setup.

Case study for investigating groundwater and the future of mountain spring discharges in Southern Italy

Groundwater extraction is used to alleviate drought in many habitats. However, widespread drought decreases spring discharge and there is a need to integrate climate change research into resource management and action. Accurate estimates of groundwater discharge may be valuable in improving decision support systems of hydrogeological resource exploitation. The present study performs a forecast for groundwater discharge in Aquifer?s Cervialto Mountains(southern Italy). A time series starting in 1883 was the basis for longterm predictions. An Ensemble Discharge Prediction(EDis P) was applied, and the progress of the discharge ensemble forecast was inferred with the aid of an Exponential Smoothing(ES) model initialized at different annual times. EDisP-ES hindcast model experiments were tested, and discharge plume-patterns forecast was assessed with horizon placed in the year 2044. A 46-year cycle pattern was identified by comparing simulations and observations, which is essential for the forecasting purpose. ED is P-ES performed an ensemble mean path for the coming decades that indicates a discharge regime within ± 1 standard deviation around the mean value of 4.1 m^3 s^(-1). These fluctuations are comparable with those observed in the period 1961-1980 and further back, with changepoints detectable around the years 2025 and 2035. Temporary drought conditions are expected after the year 2030.

Metastatic gastric cancer remains an incurable disease,with a relative 5-year survival rate of 7%-27%.Chemotherapy,which improves overall survival(OS) and quality of life,is the main treatment *** has demonstrated that the best survival results obtained in earlier randomized studies were achieved with three-drug regimens containing a fluoropyrimidine,an anthracycline,and cisplatin(ECF).Although there has been little progress in improving median OS times beyond the 9-mo plateau achievable with the standard regimens,the availability of newer agents has provided some measure of optimism.A number of new combinations incorporating docetaxel,oxaliplatin,capecitabine,and S-1 have been explored in randomized *** combinations,such as epirubicin-oxaliplatin-capecitabine,have been shown to be as effective as(or perhaps more effective than) ECF,and promising early data have been derived for S-1 in combination with *** factor that might contribute to extending median OS is the advancement whenever possible to second-line cytotoxic ***,the biggest hope for signif icant survival advances in the near future would be the combination of new targeted biological agents with existing chemotherapy f irst-line regimens.

Background: The allo-immune response following organ transplantation constitutes one of the main determinants concerning both short- and long- term outcomes in renal graft recipients. Chemokines and their receptors play a diversified and important role, either homeostatic or inflammatory and direct different immune-competent cell types to the allograft. While deeply studied in the last two decades, controversy persists as a result of chemokines’ pleiotropic actions. We report our analysis of CCR1, CCR3, CCR7, CCL5 and CX3CL1 expression or synthesis by graft-infiltrating cells in human kidney transplants (KTx). At the same time, we tested their robustness in diagnosing acute rejection. Methods: Fine-needle aspiration biopsies (Fnab) were performed either on days 7 or 14 post-transplantation among stable KTx and on the day of acute rejection (AR) diagnosis. Fnab cytopreparations were studied by the enzymatic avidin-biotin complex staining for CCR1, CCR3, CCR7 and CX3CL1. From another subgroup of cases, Fnab samples were cultured for 48 hours and the supernatants were analysed for CCL5 by ELISA. Results: The group of AR cases showed a significantly up-regulated expression of CCR1, CCR3, CCR7 and CX3CL1 and a significantly higher synthesis of CCL5. The positive predictive values were respectively 92%, 97%, 85%, 76% and 78% and negative predictive values were by the same order, 100%, 73%, 100%, 98% and 83%. Conclusions: Our study permits us to advance that CCR1 and CCR3 play a significant and non-redundant role in acute rejection, and it is the first report of CCR3 association with rejection, probably related to CCL5. The presence inside the graft of significant up-regulation for CCR7 surmises that part of antigen presentation may be performed there without being restricted to secondary lymphoid sites. Our results with CX3CL1 confirm other reports.
