An up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UAsB)reactor targeting sulfate reduction was operated under a constant TOc/s-sO2-4ratio of 1.5±0.3 g c/g s for 639 days using crude glycerol as carbon source.A filamentous and fluffy flocculant material,namely slime-like substances(sLs),was gradually accumulated in the bioreactor after the cease of methanogenic *** accumulation of sLs was followed by a decrease in the removal efficiencies and a deterioration in the *** characteristics of sLs were investigated to explore the causes of its formation and the effect of sLs on the UAsB *** showed that glycerol fermentation and sulfate reduction processes taking place in the reactor were mainly accomplished in the bottom part of the UAsB reactor,as the sludge concentration in the bottom was *** accumulation of sLs in the UAsB reactor caused sludge flotation that further led to biomass washout,which decreased the sulfate and glycerol removal *** activity tests performed with granular sludge(Gs),slime-covered granular sludge(scGs)and sLs showed that there was no difference between Gs and sLs in the mechanism of glycerol fermentation and sulfate ***,the specific sulfate reduction rate of Gs was higher than that of sLs,while sLs showed a higher glycerol fermentation rate than that of *** different rates in Gs and sLs were attributed to the higher relative abundances of fermentative microorganisms found in sLs and higher relative abundances of sulfate reducing bacteria(sRB)found in Gs.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) caused by anthropogenic climate change are becoming a key driver of change at the ecosystem level. Thermal conditions experienced by marine organisms across their distribution, particularly towards the equator, are likely to approach their physiological limits, resulting in extensive mortality and subsequent changes at the population level. Populations at the margins of their species' distribution are thought to be more sensitive to climate-induced environmental pressures than central populations, but our understanding of variability in fitness-related physiological traits in trailing versus leading-edge populations is limited. In a laboratory simulation study, we tested whether two leading (Iceland) and two trailing (spain) peripheral populations of the intertidal macroalga corallina officinalis display different levels of maximum potential quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) resilience to current and future winter MHWs scenarios. Our study revealed that ongoing and future local winter MHWs will not negatively affect leading-edge populations of c. officinalis, which exhibited stable photosynthetic efficiency throughout the study. Trailing edge populations showed a positive though non-significant trend in photosynthetic efficiency throughout winter MHWs exposure. Poleward and equatorward populations did not produce significantly different results, with winter MHWs having no negative affect on Fv/Fm of either population. Additionally, we found no long-term regional or population-level influence of a winter MHWs on this species' photosynthetic efficiency. Thus, we found no statistically significant difference in thermal stress responses between leading and trailing populations. Nonetheless, c. officinalis showed a trend towards higher stress responses in southern than northern populations. Because responses rest on a variety of local population traits, they are difficult to predict based solely on thermal pressures.

Influence of biomass burning on ozone levels in the Megalopolis of central Mexico during the cOVID-19 lockdown

The massive reductions in anthropogenic emissions resulting from the cOVID-19 lockdown provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the effect of mitigation measures aiming to abate air *** Mexico,the total lockdown period took place during the dry-hot season when biomass burning activity is ***,we investigate the role of biomass burning emissions on regional ozone levels in the Megalopolis of central *** studied period covers the lockdown phases 2 and 3,and the first month of the New *** applied a factor separation technique and process analysis to estimate the pure and synergistic contributions of emission reductions under lockdown and that from biomass burning to daily ozone maximum concentrations in 7 metropolitan areas of different states in the *** results revealed that biomass burning plumes likely masked the effect of massive reductions from mobile emissions,impacted the PBL development during phase 3 and favored transition and mixed NO_(x)-limited and VOc-limited regional *** contributed to increased ozone production in the middle to lower PBL by changing the regional background levels which potentially could bias high ozone production efficiency *** the Megalopolis contribution to economic and societal development at national scale,our study suggests that ozone mitigation measures during the dry-hot season targeting mainly mobile emissions will likely be offset by biomass burning plumes.A regional and synergic policy aiming to control biomass burning would help to reduce the occurrence of high ozone levels in central Mexico with the co-benefit of tackling short-lived climate pollutants.

Minimally Invasive surgery for Necrotizing Pancreatitis: A case Report

Introduction : Necrotizing pancreatitis management is complex and varies significantly among clinicians. Minimally invasive approaches like transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy are emerging as effective treatment options. This case report underscores the technique’s efficacy, clinical outcomes, and role in reducing complications. clinical Observation: A 59-year-old male with a history of smoking and alcoholism presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Over the following weeks, he developed symptoms including asthenia, weight loss, and melena. Diagnostic workup revealed severe anemia and Balthazar E necrotizing pancreatitis, with significant intra-abdominal fluid collections and signs of infection. After initial conservative management, the patient underwent transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy due to deteriorating clinical status. The procedure involved removing necrotic tissue and performing a cystogastroanastomosis and jejunostomy. Postoperative care included fasting, parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and enzymatic replacement. The patient recovered well, with reduced necrotic tissue on follow-up imaging, and was discharged twelve days post-surgery [1]. conc lusion: Transgastric necrosectomy by laparoscopy is a valuable first-line surgical option for patients with symptomatic necrotizing pancreatitis, particularly in cases without prior interventions. This minimally invasive technique helps reduce major complications and mortality, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional open necrosectomy. The multidisciplinary approach and careful postoperative management were crucial to the patient’s favorable outcome. The case highlights the potential of transgastric necrosectomy as an effective treatment strategy in managing complex pancreatitis cases, including those with associated duodenal perforation [2].

Modeling and multi-objective optimization of a gasoline engine using neural networks and evolutionary algorithms

In this paper, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization （MOPsO） algorithm and a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II （NsGA-II） are used to optimize the operating parameters of a 1.6 L, spark ignition （sI） gasoline engine. The aim of this optimization is to reduce engine emissions in terms of carbon monoxide （cO）, hydrocarbons （Hc）, and nitrogen oxides （NOx）, which are the causes of diverse environmental problems such as air pollution and global warming. stationary engine tests were performed for data generation, covering 60 operating conditions. Artificial neural networks （ANNs） were used to predict exhaust emissions, whose inputs were from six engine operating parameters, and the outputs were three resulting exhaust emissions. The outputs of ANNs were used to evaluate objective functions within the optimization algorithms： NsGA-II and MOPsO. Then a decision-making process was conducted, using a fuzzy method to select a Pareto solution with which the best emission reductions can be achieved. The NsGA-II algorithm achieved reductions of at least 9.84%, 82.44%, and 13.78% for cO, Hc, and NOx, respectively. With a MOPsO algorithm the reached reductions were at least 13.68%, 83.80%, and 7.67% for cO, Hc, and NOx, respectively.

A systematic Review of cannabidiol Effects in coronary syndromes: challenges to clinical Translation

Background: Myocardial ischemia in addition to other several cardiac syndromes represent a pathological proinflammatory state alongside a complex cellular microenvironment that can be modified by using cannabinoids. cannabidiol (cBD), a non-psychoactive compound of cannabis has been recently proposed as an immudomodulatory and cardioprotective drug. Objectives: In this systematic review we sought to clarify and summarize the clinical and preclinical evidence of potential benefit of the use of cBD in coronary syndromes. Methods: We conducted a systematic search and review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRIsMA) and Review of Animal Data from Experimental studies (cAMARADEs) guidelines, in the electronic database from PubMed, Web of science and scopus up to April 2022 using predefined search terms. Pre-specified exclusion and inclusion criteria were considered, finally 11 articles were chosen to be included for this peer review. Results: currently there are no good-quality clinical trials with the use of cBD in acute or chronic coronary syndromes. A total of 11 preclinical studies where prescreened and 5 demonstrated reproducible positive cardiovascular outcomes on in-vivo models treated with cBD. Mechanisms of cBD cardioprotection observed: 1) reduction in oxidative stress and inflammation, 2) activation of adenosine receptors and 3) increased expression of angiotensin type 2-receptor. Experimental models included ischemia/reperfusion injury, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and metabolic syndrome-like conditions. conclusion: No clinical recommendation can be issued with the current evidence, on the use of cBD in acute and chronic coronary syndromes. Based on preclinical evidence, we considered there is enough evidence to propose the development of well-designed clinical trials that include cBD in the management of coronary syndromes.
